Welcome to RAGOM Kiah!

Kiah (pronounced with a long I) and her litter mate Kaylee 08 326 arrived in Minneapolis yesterday from South Dakota. Thanks to her rescuers Rona and Kristin in SD and Dave in MN! The sisters were welcomed by many RAGOM volunteers who were attending a picnic. Both dogs headed straight for the kiddie pool to cool off!

Kiah was surrendered because her owners have 6 kids and didn't have time for her anymore. Kiah will be 8 yo in July. She is a Cream Colored Purebred Golden Retriever. She is cute as can be and a bit timid. She looks to her sister Kaylee to lead the way. It's so adorable how they kiss each other when they pass!

Kiah has been a bit overshadowed by her sister and it shows in the weight difference. Even though Kiah is overweight, it's clear Kaylee got most of the food! Unfortunately, Kiah has been chewing on her tail the past few weeks. Chewing to the point that the bone is exposed. She was seen by Dr. J today at VCA Animal Care Hospital in Richfield and she recommends that her tail be amputated. We will have that done this coming Wednesday.

Kiah is a sweetheart and tolerated the manipulations and dressing change on her tail so well. You know it must've hurt! Poor girl! Kiah is still quite anxious about the huge change in her life in the last 36 hours. It will be wonderful to see her relax and come out of her shell. More to come as we get to know her.

Our Kiah Bear left us today. She hadn't been herself since before Thanksgiving. She was treated for an inner ear infection which really turned out to be a brain tumor. We were lucky to have her for the time we did and I would do it again. Kiah embodied the golden retriever breed to the very end. I'm glad we were acceptable parents and met your approval. Sorry for the bad news. Nothing in this whole life is greater than the love of a dog.

I got this note and picture from Kiah's new family. She really looks like she knows she is home.

Kiah seems to be adjusting pretty well to her new home. She walks well on the leash and has a decent appetite. Dayle, she's all set up with a Thursday 8 am vet visit in Richfield. She slept well last night with her cone on. I took today off from work to keep an eye on her. Thanks for everyone's help.

Well, little Kiah had her tail amputation and is have a rough go of it. It is quite painful still and last night she woke up at 3am crying and pacing. I gave her another dose of pain meds and have been having friends stop in and give her a dose when I am at work. She is also on antibiotics for 10 more days.

I do not know exactly how much tail is left since the bandage won't be changed till later today. It looks like about 4-6 inches but it's hard to tell. You can see the stump in the picture. Don't mind the dirt--she loves to roll in the backyard! Even with the cone on she can reach her tail. She just curls herself around. Right now it is too painful for her to bother. I think she will be wearing the cone for quite some time. I do let her out of it while I can watch her diligently. When she goes for her tail a gentle 'no' will stop her.

She is still pretty shy and will run away from new people. But it doesn't take but a few minutes and she is looking for pets with the rest of the pack. She really is a follower and could use another dog to lead the way. She is beginning to eat a little when I give her some canned food mixed in with her dry food.

What Kiah needs in a forever family:

  • Probably another confident dog
  • Consistent exercise to help her lose weight and stay trim
  • Obedience training as she knows no commands
  • All the love and patience she deserves to help her feel secure and confident

If she sounds like the sweetheart you've been looking to add to your family, let placement know. Kiah will be waiting.....
