Da “B” is in da house…..and da house is ROCKIN’!! Da “B” is da most handsomest dog EVER!!

Seriously tho…….”B’” is a dog worth giving a second look. He is gorgeous! He is the lighter blonde color with a bigger head and long ears that are as soft as a baby’s behind. BTW…..”B”s name was Baby, but he is such a manly guy it got shortened to just “B”.

“B” has had some training in his past as he knows (when he wants to) sit, down, shake, high five, and his special version of roll over (he doesn’t quite make the “over” part!) “B” does not jump up on people which is a very good thing! He is very food motivated, but has learned to wait until given the command to eat, he has also learned how to take treats nicely and not bite fingertips. J He crates willingly and doesn’t mind spending the day there while I’m at work.

“B” gets along with big dogs, little dogs, old and young cats. I do not have children so I can’t tell you how he does with them. However, due to his size and energy level, older children would be a requirement.

Now to explain some of “B”s requirements……even though he gets along with everything, he does have his moments, such as when he has a rawhide, or other high value item. He will growl and do a “mock” attack on anything coming into his space. If a cat strolls by while he has something he values, he will growl, bark and run them off. My dog savvy cats just stop, give him the look that says “dumb freakin dog” and continue on their way. He never makes contact, just asserts his authority. We are working on that behavior and it will be a work in progress for whoever adopts him. He does play keep away with high value items from his humans. He can turn his head away faster than any dog I have ever had in my house!!! This too, is a work in progress. He has learned to “trade” the item for a food treat. He also has learned that there is no petting or lovin’ of any kind unless he keeps his head still. “B” is smart and wants to please, he needs consistency and trust from his human to be the best he can be.

“B” does walk well on a leash, UNTIL, he sees a cat, dog, human, squirrel, bunny, etc. He rushes to the end of the leash and starts growling, barking, jumping and acting crazy. I have worked with a trainer in Omaha, and she said he appears anxious. He isn’t sure what that “thing” is going to do or which way it is going to go, so he tries to scare it off. Some of his behavior is also being somewhat protective of his human. He will need some serious work with your local trainer to become the big, calm loveable guy that we know he can be.

“B” will need a fenced yard!! He does like to explore and his recall needs a lot of work!!

Now, for “B”s last work in progress…..he does do some counter surfing if given the opportunity. Let me tell ya, he really enjoyed the caramel apple dip I left on the counter one night. I took a nap on the sofa so he tried his paw at dumpster diving too…..that was a onetime event (so far!)

“B” might be around two years old, but he is just a big loveable puppy!!! He is very devoted to his human, HAS to be in the bathroom with you, laying outside the door is not good enough! He is soooo worth the extra work he will need to be your best friend and companion. If he sounds like he would fit in to your household call your placement advisor and get hooked up with me so I can tell you all about da “B”!

Kirby went on a home visit with me recently and he met up with a cat without any issue. His past papers indicated he lived with cats, since we don’t have cats it is hard to predict what he will do. He basically ignored the dog savvy cat. He was a perfect gentleman during the home visit especially after he got a rawhide bone!

They look so cute, but it took over 5 minutes to get them to all pose for this picture! Kirby had to bring his foot'ball' to the photo shoot!

Kirby and the boys have converted our living room into the wrestling mat. If no humans are in the room, then there is no wrestling match. As soon as we walk into the room, instant audience for the 3 wrestling dogs…tug of war, chase each other and tackle one another to get the ball or rope. They are full of antics and fun to watch when they play so hard. Sometimes, I see a tag-team approach…Chance climbs up in my lap to rest, then watches Tyson play with Kirby…until it is time to tag-team and they switch places wrestling with Kirby.

Kirby has a keen eye for the ball and will hover around Chance and Tyson wrestling until the ball pops out and Kirby retrieves the ball. The three have so much fun playing and rarely get on each other’s nerves.

We are back at the cabin this weekend and the boys run, run through the deep snow chasing the ball. Kirby and my boys just love being at the cabin, big happy faces. Tired puppies are such good puppies!

Kirby is ready for his forever home. He is stabilizing nicely in foster care. We are working with him on his reactions to visitors to the house and found it best if he is in the backyard when people come to the door. He is fine with repeat guests who come to the door. This will need to continue with his adoptive family, so he feels secure and doesn't think he has to protect himself, his people or whatever the reason he gets excited when visitors arrive. Contact your placement advisor to meet him, as we are not planning to attend any events with him.

Here is Kirby at the meet and greet. He did a great job considering how many dogs and people were in attendance. Kirby really liked the girls- Joy Elsa Ruby and Jewel. Of course they were so cute!  Kirby is doing better everyday in foster care. He is calming down, playing nice, not so enduring with Chance and meeting strangers without concern. He is becoming more snugly as he calms down. The other day he laid next to me for over an hour. He hasn't chewed anything inappropriate or potty in the house, always my fear with new fosters. With warmer weather we are walking again and he has seen a couple of walkers and dogs without issue. He does a low groan and I tell him no, then he quiets down. Again it's about making secure and telling him wrong from right behaviors.

Kirby will be in Detroit Lakes area Mar 1-3, contact your placement advisor to meet him.  In all his write-ups we missed that he is AKC registered, although we were not given his full history and gene line.

Kirby, formerly known as B or Baby, has been returned to RAGOM. He was adopted out to a family last fall and they found he had reactions to visitors at their house or when meeting another dog on walks. Kirby wouldn’t tell us what the deal was, but some have thought he was protecting his owners. None the less, his family thought it better he was returned to RAGOM.

Kirby spent time in boarding until he found a foster. He has now been with us for 10 days and is finding his groove in our house. Kirby is a playful 2 year old, golden retriever. Unfortunately, he has been bounced many times in his short live. He is now living in his 7th place in just over 2 years! This causes stress in dogs that can show in many ways, one is chewing. He does like to chew on balls and wants to focus on one toy at a time. Other signs of stress are losing hair, panting and drinking water excessively.

He met our dogs without issue. Kirby listened to the cues of Tyson, who is the more dominant, but playful resident dog. As for Chance, 12-021, he still hasn’t figured out to tell the foster dogs that he doesn’t like an overly affectionate foster mate. Kirby keeps pestering Chance until we pull Kirby off of Chance.  They all play well and chase each other all over the house and yard.

Kirby has shown some insecurity early on, which doesn’t surprise me. The first night, he didn’t know where he was and he was scared, barking when I let the boys out at 2am for a potty break. What did this look like? His insecurity was displayed as barking, backing up away from me and hiding on the other side of the kitchen table. I called his name, held my hand out and found his collar. I led him outside and then all was well.

He has shown this same behavior of insecurity when we tried to get him to go downstairs. He had nothing to do with it.  A few days later, he went down stairs to do laundry with me without any coaching. When I was vacuuming the stairs, he showed his insecurity again when he couldn’t get back up the stairs! Silly puppy! I simple turned off the vacuum and he ran right past me. He was reported to not like loud noises or the vacuum cleaner. He does okay, seems to pace in the room when the vacuum is on instead of avoid it like our other dogs.

Kirby does need a special family to help him become the confident, great companion that he has the potential to be. He doesn’t like loud noises. He doesn’t like people, dogs or noises coming up from behind him. He does need to live with a family that doesn’t have children, is quiet and has a young, confident, adult dog, maybe ages 2-6. Kirby can be very playful and rambunctious, so a play mate is essential to burn off his energy.

He needs others to tell him it is okay to be a dog and give his boundaries. He is eager to please and knows several commands. Listening and following on his commands consistently is where our work is currently. He knows sit, down, off, stay, come, no. He does do a roll over trick and shake. He is learning to leave his ball to play fetch, but does better with a trade. Families interested in a diamond in the rough need to be consistent with Kirby, give him commands to follow and make him feel safe. He needs to be a puppy that can grow into a comfortable companion. We will only consider families with limited exposure to children, have a quiet home and another large dog. For Kirby’s sake, we have to find a great match, so he can be stable for the rest of his life.

Well, now that I’ve explained how “B” acts when he’s being a knot head, let me tell you what a sweet guy he can be! “B” is just a big ol’ puppy who needs what every puppy needs……love and guidance. It’s soooo easy to love him, so the guidance part should not be thought of as a negative, but rather a bonding experience you can share. He REALLY wants to be your best friend and in return he will take care of your emotional needs whenever he can. “B” is a great listener, and he will NOT share your secrets with anyone! (not even the cat!) He would make a great running or jogging partner once he learns to focus on you and not what is going on around him. Attending obedience class with “B” will give him that focus and strengthen the bond between you two. As I mentioned before, he has had some obedience training, so it will be a refresher course, he will be easy peasy to work with since he already has a grasp of what is expected of him. He really loves being with his human, so consider him to be an active part of your life, not a couch potato, but a full-fledged member of the family!!

“B” is ready to be a part of someone’s family….he is neutered and current on vaccinations. He is totally housetrained, not one single accident while he has been with me!

He does not need to be crated, but at my house there are temptations……case in point….I wrote about him enjoying the caramel apple dip last time, well this week he got ahold of a large apple. I don’t have much cupboard space, so I store a lot of stuff on my counters. “B” was being so quiet lying next to the couch. When I looked down he had a large apple. He gave it to me with no issues. Sooo, I turned it into a training experience. I put the apple on the top shelf of my end table. Every time he tried to sneak it back, I gave him a verbal correction and tons of praise!! He was a very good boy about the whole thing, that is until I took a short nap. To this day I have not even found a stem or seed from that dang apple!! Hope “B” enjoyed it! LOL!

Please contact your placement advisor about “B” so I can get in touch with you and tell you in person what a Great dog he can “B” !
