DREAM BABY!!! Knight is a wonderful dog. He is a lover with a sweet puppy face and body wagging welcome when you walk into the room. Oh and he still smells like a puppy which warms my heart. We are several days in and Knight is doing well. He is quite settled in our home. He passed his vet check with flying colors and is scheduled to be neutered on 8/3. He's in great shape so I expect a speedy recovery for him and him to be available for a forever home soon there after.
Knight's first few days he met some of his new experiences with trepidation but he is quite comfortable now. He would bark a good bark and then turn tail and run like a fraidy cat. He'd run right to foster mom. Now he trots around the neighborhood (on his gentle leader, which to which he is adapting well) tail wagging and a smile on his face. As a part of his trepidation, he has shown some fear of men, especially tall ones or ones doning hats. He quickly tucks into a submissive position and cowers. He may even bark and then run in the opposition direction. In each case, he has responded well when the source of the fear gets down to his level and shows him he means no harm. Within seconds, Knight is tail wagging and greeting the new man with kisses.
He has no resource guarding issues with people (we hand feed him) but I've kept the other dogs away while he is eating because he is still new -so that part is still unknown. I don't expect anything though. They are sharing toys without incident thus far.
Knight came to us with no manners but he is quickly learning that jumping on people is not acceptable. He gets so excited to greet you that he can't wait to share his affection. He is learning that furniture is not ok, that "wrong" means "no". As stated earlier, he is doing well with his gentle leader and loves his walks. We are walking him several times a day. He likes hanging out with our resident dogs but he's also fine on his own. He favors hanging out with foster mom while she is in her office working.
This sweetheart is eye candy in the neighborhood! He has tons of fans and well wishers with everyone commenting on his beauty and grace. At six months, he'll be easy to train and will offer someone much love and companionship. The vet said he would have guessed he was a Flat Coated retriever but I said his papers say he is a mix of a black lab & golden retriever (guess how you get a Flat Coat?)
Here are a few pictures of him on the front step watching the children play.
