Lacy 06-289

Profile

6/27/06: Lacy has made the long journey to northern Minnesota. She was an owner surrender to the shelter in Rapid City, SD. She will stay here until she has had her pups and they are old enough to leave their Mom. She is a beautiful little Golden Retriever, that on some days looks like she is all Golden and on other days looks like she could have a little bit of Spaniel in her. Lacy is somewhat shy and timid, she closes her eyes and lowers her head when you reach to pet her - which is usually an indication of being hit by a human. Lacy was surrendered by her owner but her owner only had her for a few months and then had to give her up because she was moving and could not take her along. Her owner thought she had come from an abusive situation.

I don't know how anyone could be cruel to this sweet, gentle, little girl. She will soon be a mama - the vet expects her to deliver in the next week or two. Lacy is going on 6 years old, too old to be having puppies. Lacy has not disclosed who her boyfriend was so we will just have to wait and see what the puppies look like. After Lacy has her pups, she will need to be spayed and have one of her teeth pulled, then she will be looking for a home where she will be loved and cared for the rest of her years.

Oh my - how time flies when you're having fun! Lacy is doing great....she is a beautiful Golden that weighs in at 57 lbs. Last week Lacy and her puppy, 06-311 Jessie, went in for their 6 week check up and everyone was fine.

Lacy has not learned how to play with other dogs, but she is learning how to play with her pup. It has taken awhile but I actually watched them play yesterday. She is usually quite gentle with her pup but when Jessie gets too rough and starts biting too hard Lacy will let her know by putting her down on her back, grabbing her neck and holding her there for a while. It is great to see Lacy interacting with her pup this way - hopefully she will help teach Jessie a softer bite.

Lacy has a gentle soul and is getting more comfortable around me. She will actually come up to me by herself for some pets and attention now. Her tail is wagging a lot more these days and she is being a little more active now that her pup is not feeding as often. I'm surprised Lacy has not weaned her pup yet, but the Vet did tell me that when there is just one or two pups sometimes the mother will let them nurse longer. Lacy does love attention - she would lay down by your side all day if you were petting her or brushing her. She looks like she is in heaven when you stroke her - her eyes close to just little slits, like she is off somewhere very dreamy.

Once Lacy weans her pup she will be ready to be spayed - then our sweet little Lacy will be available for adoption. Lacy would do good in a home with a dog, but she does not play with other dogs so the dog should be older and want a companion more than a playmate. Lacy would also do fine in a home with no other dogs - I know she would love all the attention she would get being an only dog. I don't know how she would be around cats since I have no cats here. Lacy is house trained but still likes to chew, so I would have bones and toys available for her to chew on if she is home alone. She is not much of a barker but isn't afraid to put her two front paws on the counter if she thinks there is something good up there. Lacy knows how to sit for treats and is pretty good at coming when called. If you raise your voice to her she will cower and run away, and even now she sometimes still dips her head and closes her eyes like she is going to be hit. It makes me feel so sad for her that she was mistreated at one time - she is such a sweet girl. If you think you could give this little girl the home she so deserves, just let us know!

Lacy finally had her babies!! She delivered her first pup at 11:40 pm on July 6, 2006, but unfortunately her first pup was not alive. She delivered her second pup at 2:00 am on July 7, 2006, and it is a healthy little boy that has a very attentive Mom !!! Lacy has only one pup to take care of which will certainly make her job and my job easier, but I'm very sad that we couldn't have had two pups.

Both of Lacy's pups were black; at this point it is hard to tell what breed or breeds the father had in him. The pup is black with three paws that have white on them and some white on his chest. Lacy is doing very well; she doesn't want to leave her pup for very long, so it is hard to get her out to go to the bathroom. I found a surprise this morning when I went to use the upstairs bathroom - Lacy decided to use it as a bathroom also !! Today I had to resort to taking her pup outside so she would follow me out there, but she did get the job done. I think I will have to use the same tactic before bedtime because she can't seem to make it all the way outside before she has to turn around and go check on her pup. She has no problem with me handling her baby but does get nervous when I have her pup outside - however - if any of the other dogs get within 5 feet of her space she will definitely tell them to back off!!

More next week ..........
