Lance is an adorable 6 month old puppy who was rescued from Georgia and arrived Sunday . He appears to be a golden/lab mix. he is up to date on all his shots & is getting on the schedule to be neutered in a couple weeks. He is a happy, fun loving little guy who is getting along great with my 4 year old female golden and 2 children. He is crate trained with no crying or barking. As a matter of fact, I have not heard him bark yet!

He is all legs and ears! It's so cute to watch him attack bugs and play outside. He has typical puppy behaviors and house training is in process but he does not mess in his crate so this is a helpful tool in his training. He has bonded so quickly to me. He is very treat and food motivated which is helpful as well.  He is quickly learning how to walk on a leash and basic manners & commands.

Lance needs a home that is ready for the energy & fun of a puppy!  He will be a loyal companion that is sure to keep his people smiling.

Lance has been with us now for just over three weeks.  He has continued to learn and grow each day and is now taller, lanky and weighs about 35 pounds.  He needed to go outside very frequently and was tested to see if he had a urinary tract infection (UTI) and he did.  He is being treated for this with antibiotics for 10 days.  When Lance meets new people, he does get very excited and will dribble urine.  My 6 year old daughter says it best and tells people, “Look out for Lance’s excite pee!”  This may also be related to his UTI and seems to have gotten better, but he still does a bit.  Lance has not had an accident in his crate and sleeps through an 8 hour night.  He is ready to go outside in the morning though and needs to be lead straight to the door without any interaction so he can “hold it” until he gets outside.  During the day he is let out after 4 hours and does well with this.  When it is time to relax and Lance needs to settle down, we put him in his crate with a Nylabone or a Kong and he lies in there quietly and typically will fall asleep.  Lance is still working on being house trained, but I think once the UTI infection is cleared up that he will have no more accidents or dribbles (or we hope).  He now runs to the door when he needs to go outside and sits and waits for us.  A couple of times he has even whined.  He definitely has it figured out that the place to do his business is outside.

Lance likes to play, play, play!  He does not wear out easily and definitely needs a family who will exercise him a lot each day.  He is learning how to play fetch and does quite well with it.

Lance does need to work on not jumping up on people when he is very excited.  He has scratched my 6 year old daughter a couple times and she wasn’t very impressed.  He does know sit, come and his name.  He knows “lay down” if you are holding a treat and is obviously very treat motivated.  I know Lance can learn to be a good, obedient dog, but someone needs to be willing to work with him on these skills.

Lance does do well with change and adjusts very quickly to new places.  He does bark at times if he is outside with us and sees someone he doesn’t know.  It is a friendly bark and he will quit when we distract him.

We will be at the Meet and Greet with Lance on this Saturday at the Coon Rapids Petco if you would like to meet him and give some support to RAGOM!  It also looks like Lance may be meeting a family this weekend and he has his paws crossed that it will be the family for him.

October 31st, 2013

Lance continues to be a very well-adjusted dog in our house.  Everyone he meets falls in love with his extra soft fur and true golden retriever personality, despite the fact he doesn’t look like a true golden retriever and lacks the long fur.  The best news is he doesn’t shed!  Yes, you read that correctly…so far absolutely no shedding from him.  Even when I brush him, I still don’t get any hair from him.  He has the softest fur I have ever felt and will accept a belly rub any chance he can get.  He is known to fall asleep laying belly up, just wishing we would jump in and give him one more rub.

Lance makes us laugh every single day, and not because he is naughty, but rather is just silly.  While eating supper, I glanced into our living room to make sure he wasn’t helping himself to a decoration he has been known to play with.  Instead, I saw him sitting on the back of our couch, where our cat usually is perched, and glancing into the mirror.  A few minutes later he decided it was comfy up there and laid down for a nice snooze.  A lanky pup (33 pounds) just looks goofy lying on the top of the couch!

Lance has fully respected the four foot fence in the yard we bring him to almost daily so he can run and play.  He loves this time, but also loves walks where he can explore all the wonderful scents of these great fall days.

Lance helped us carve pumpkins tonight.  He sat back and watched all our work for quite awhile.  Finally he couldn’t take it anymore and needed to jump in the fun!

Lance still does not respect our gates up inside our house 100%, but has never jumped over our taller ones.  He is known to try to go over the smaller kind we have, but first will hang over it.  At that point, if we catch him, we tell him “no” and “get off” and he will listen.  The only reason we keep the gates up is to keep him away from the cat box and because we want to make sure he is 100% potty trained before he has complete free roam.  He has never had an accident on our carpet and has only gone on our kitchen floor when we miss his signal of going and quietly sitting by the door.  He has only had one accident in the last 4 days, so we are almost there.  Lance currently is crated overnight in our kitchen and sleeps quietly all night long.  I then walk him in the morning before work and he has free roam of the house for about an hour while we all get ready for the day.  He is crated for 4-6 hours at a time during the day.  I go home at lunch and let him outside and then return home about 5 hours later.  He has never had an accident in his crate, has yet to destroy anything inappropriate and doesn’t bark or whine while crated.

In the evening, he has free roam of the house, except for my children’s rooms because they have many small toys in there that he is way too interested in.  Remember, he is all puppy and just wants to play, chew, and run!  Lance has been known to carry my best dress shoe across the kitchen in his mouth and drop it at my feet, or have a sudden urge to do a quick bite of the couch when he is playing with one of us.  However, it is a brief moment where the puppy gets carried away and then is quickly and easily redirected to what he should be doing.  The great news is all this energy is easily directed to appropriate play with Lance.

If you are looking for a playful puppy, with the golden retriever personality, you will get that with Lance!  He is absolutely adorable, charming, low key, learns fast and wants to please his people.  Contact your placement advisor if you want to know more information and to set up a meeting with Lance!  I can’t believe he is still in our care and not on his way to his forever home.  He is a gem!

Lance continues to impress us with his personality and ability to learn new routines and commands quickly! He is all puppy, but is learning manners and is very intelligent. Lance would like to tell you a bit about himself and some of his recent magic tricks.

Hi everyone, Lance here! My foster family calls me Super Dog! I don’t know why, but something about a Halloween costume they have planned for me. Manners, manners, manners! That is all I ever hear about these days! I have to “sit” and “wait” for my food to be put down, my leash to be put on, even before the door opens! Can you believe it?! I even have to “sit” before these people around here pet me. They keep telling me that jumping up on them isn’t going to get their attention and they wait until I sit nicely before they will touch me. I just can’t help it sometimes…I am so excited to be in a house and with people that I can hardly take it! My foster mom keeps telling me I am a quick learner, but all I really want is to get on with it anyway. I don’t want them to know my secret, but I will seriously do about anything for a treat. Hee, hee.

I think I gained another new nickname the other night: something like “Houdini.” I decided in the middle of the night that I wanted to be by my people, so I figured out how to open, not just one, but two latches on my crate. I was so excited as I raced down the hallway and jumped on their bed. But, back I went to the crate. I didn’t try to get out again until the next morning. My foster mom was doing her hair (boring) and put me in the crate, so I didn’t get into too much trouble. I just wanted to help her out. The noisy thing she was using seemed really interesting. So, I started loosening the latches again. My foster mom heard the noise, though, and I was busted this time! She couldn’t believe it when she saw me wiggling my paw back and forth right next to latch number one with a lot of patience and precision. Hearing “Lance!” made me stop.

I decided that getting out of the crate wasn’t so exciting anymore, but that sliding the bottom tray out was way more fun. Ha, ha, I surprised foster dad when he came home that day. I was still in the crate, with my blanket and toys laid perfectly under me. But, my tray was on the other side of the kitchen. I am still not telling them how I pulled that magic trick off. Now they keep saying I have a high security crate. They keep latching my leash hooks on the door on the outside of the crate… hmmm…wonder if that is an extra safety feature. I really like my crate and will go in there right away for a treat. I also sleep in it quite well and never get anxious or scared. I just want to snuggle with my people sometimes!

So anyways, I really like this place, but I would also really like to find my forever family soon. I am ready to be a good puppy and want my family to enjoy some of my crazy personality while I am young and help to continue to teach me my manners. They say I am cat and kid tested and approved, whatever that means. Fences aren’t required, although I would love an area that I can race around in. Let your placement advisor know if you are interested. I hear I will be going fast because I am so great. I don’t know what that means, but I do know I am a fast runner when I play with my friend Milo. Oh yeah, I love other dogs too, but another dog isn’t required!

Lance has moved from his original foster home in the city to our home in small town Minnesota. He arrived last night and we greatly enjoyed the puppy kisses and enthusiasm on his arrival. Lance is truly a puppy! He weighs about 27 pounds and is all legs. He pounces across the floor after his toys, loves to snuggle once he gets all his energy out and is wonderful in his crate! Lance definitely needs to learn some more manners, but he is a quick learner. We will update and add more information once we get to know Lance a bit more, but we wanted to let you know we really think this puppy will be a GREAT dog, once he learns some manners! He is all puppy right now and a complete love bug! We do see some beagle in him and are thinking he may be a golden retriever/beagle mix.

Lance needs:

  • A family who will work with him and continue to teach him manners and obedience.
  • A family who will be able to use a crate for him while he masters the rules of a house.
  • A family who will love him up, give him lots of daily exercise and really wants a puppy.

Other highlights:

  • Working on housetraining – so far no accidents in the house, except for when he is greeted and has a full bladder – then he starts to go potty, but doesn’t know he is doing it. Hopefully he will grow out of this.
  • Slept all night long in his crate without a sound, went in willingly and was ready to go in the morning.
  • Loves walks, but needs to work on walking on a leash.
  • Jumps shorter baby gates.
  • Seemed to be curious about my cat, but once he got over the gate, he ran right by her. There were more exciting things to check out!
  • Knows sit, no, responds to his name and come.
  • Is working on “wait”, “off” and “down.”
  • Met our male dog without any issues. He just wanted to play, play, play!
  • If Lance sounds like the puppy for you, let your placement advisor know! He is all ready to start meeting families!

Lance has had a busy week adjusting to our home. He is walking better on the Gentle Leader & still quite a gentleman about being in his crate. He is eating ferociously to make up for lost meals!! He lets me pet him, handle his bowl & touch this mouth while he's eating with no problem. He's been Front Lined, Heart Guarded & Microchipped this week.

He is set to be neutered on October 16th. The RAGOM vet thinks he is more like 8-10 months old, she also predicts that he will be long & lean when he gets bigger. He free roamed in my house with no accidents last night. But I still think his potty training needs a little work. He respects my fence & has pretty good recall already. He's still a funny puppy, but will settle down & correct when asked to. I've finally heard him bark too! He had his first bath with us today & he thought it was a party!!

Please consider Lance to be your forever friend!! He has so much love & happy puppy kisses to give to someone who can provide him with the structure & attention he needs!!
