Layla 08-363

Profile

This is Layla. She is a golden mix (approx 1 year old) that was found as a stray in Harlan, IA. She was scheduled to be put to sleep on the 21st but we couldn't have that, so she is now going to know the golden life with RAGOM. Layla was taken to the vet today and has been updated on all of her shots. She weighs 54.4 lbs and is a beautiful light blonde color. She does have some goop in one eye, but is now on medication to take care of that. Other than that the vet said she was in great shape. There is no history on Layla so we don't know her story, but RAGOM is now her new beginning. We are not sure if she is spayed so the vet wants to wait and see so that we don't do any surgery that isn't necessary.

We have had Layla about a day but this is what we know so far. She is smart. We started working on commands this morning and she is picking them up very quickly. I think going through obedience training will be good for her. She is good with kids (ours are 3, 6, 13) and with other dogs. We have a resident golden (Lennon), we adopted Layla's sister (Lola), and our foster Dylan 08-330 is around to give her plenty of play time. She plays like a puppy but she can also be calm.

She shows signs of never having been in a house before. She didn't like to walk through doors at first. She does well going outside and appears to be housebroken. She had never gone up stairs before, but after watching her sister go up she followed at her own pace. She plants herself when you first try to walk her on the leash, but after a minute or so she will walk just fine. She doesn't really even pull. She has not tried to counter surf or chew on inappropriate items (unlike her sister). She is a very sweet and petite golden.

I think she will make a great addition to any family as long as they are willing to continue her training and know that she is still a puppy. So if you have room in your family for a beautiful blonde let placementatragom [dot] org know and we can arrange a visit.

Updates

Monday, July 21, 2008

Hi everyone. Just a real quick update on sweet little Layla. I took her in to be spayed today, but since they think she is either starting or ending a heat cycle she must wait a couple weeks. Spaying her now would have increased the risk of complications so we will wait. So she will be going in 2 weeks from now to be spayed. They rechecked her eye since it was really goopy today and they want us to continue the drops for another 7 days. She has been a trooper with the eye drops. :) She did have her microchip implanted and we brought in a stool sample for them to check. I haven't heard anything so, no news is good news!

Today she reached a milestone. She jumped into the car by herself. I had to lift her in earlier, but when I picked her up from the vet I explained that this is something that she must learn and I wasn't going to help her do it. It took a minute for her to realize I really wasn't going to help her and then she did it.

Layla is very sweet but can play like the best of them. She is more timid than any of the dogs we have. She is still doing very well with the training. She walks well on the leash. She was prancing to the car earlier. I don't know if it was because she got to go home or what. I said earlier that she doesn't chew on inappropriate things, well she is warming up to that and taking after her sister (thanks ever so much Lola. LOL). Because of this we have been crating her at night. She does very well in her crate. Since she does chew I would not put anything in there with her that you don't want destroyed. I think since she and her sister have been here we have lost a cell phone, several CDs, speaker wires, and a microphone for Sing Star (playstation game). This however is not TOTALLY their fault. They were just teaching my daughter that she needs to clean her room. :) She still has not had an accident in the house. I am at home so I do make sure they go out pretty regularly.

Other than that there is nothing new right now to report. She is very sweet and will make someone an excellent new addition to their family. So if you just cannot get enough of those little fur balls and want to add another to your family keep Layla in mind. Thanks so much for thinking/reading about her. We will update you when there is something new happening with her.

Take care!
