It’s been way too long for an update for sweet Violet. She has been doing really well. You’d never know she has a severe heart condition. She had a full assessment at the specialist at 7 months, and while her stenosis is still severe, she’s been doing very well and there hasn’t been any progression of her condition.
Because she’s maintaining so well, we made the decision to get her settled in a forever home.
Violet was adopted by a wonderful veterinarian who is a repeat RAGOM adopter and totally a Golden Retriever person! Her family always has several dogs, and they are happy, beautifully cared for, and they get lots of opportunity to run free at her cabin in the country.
This is right up Violet’s alley! She has two fur-brothers who are 2 and 10 years old and follow her everywhere, and a 15-year-old matriarch Golden Retriever.
Violet is a pack kind of gal so she loves this busy house! Her two human siblings are off to college after the summer, so they’ll have to keep their mom occupied so she doesn’t miss the kids too much!
With Violet’s new mom being a vet, she’ll be able to keep a close eye on her condition. Please send prayers Violet’s way that she sidesteps the normal life expectancy for a dog with severe subaortic stenosis, and she lives a long life full of love.
This sweet girl has a heart condition, but it’s our hearts that have been touched so deeply by her. Her new mom is really good about sending updates, so we get to watch her antics and still get to be a part of her life. Please join me in congratulating the family for adopting precious Violet, and in wishing Violet the very, very best!

I’ve put off updating you all about Violet because I’ve been at a loss for words in how to share what is going on. I’ll just jump in: Violet went to the vet specialist and the results were not what any of us anticipated. She has a severe subaortic stenosis (SAS), which is not repairable.
The specialist said that as she gets bigger and especially as she reaches adult size, her heart will be increasingly taxed. It is anticipated she will have a significantly shortened life span, so her status is changed to "hospice."
In the meantime, she is on medication to lower her blood pressure. Outwardly, you’d never know anything is wrong. She is spunky and silly and oh, so smart. Her light shines extra bright, so if anyone can beat the odds, she can.
I’d like to share everything she's learned (how to "sit" and how to stalk squirrels in a wood pile) and how much she has grown, but will save those details for the next update.

Miss Violet reminded me that it’s been waaaaaay too long since her initial bio was posted. She’s had a whirlwind couple of weeks. She’s been to the vet and had her initial vaccinations. The vet found a heart murmur and suggested we monitor it as it doesn’t appear to be impacting her.
When I took the pups in to be spayed and neutered, their vet believes the murmur is more pronounced, so she didn’t get spayed. Violet will have her murmur assessed by a specialist in a couple of days.
Violet has her very own family and was ready to be adopted after her spay surgery. We had to put that on hold until her murmur is assessed. We’re all anxiously waiting for the specialist appointment, and keeping our fingers crossed.
In the meantime, she’s grown like crazy and is as outgoing as ever. She is active, and the first one to want to get going after a nap, and the last one to settle down. Her new family will need to stay one step ahead of her to keep her mentally stimulated, and have her on a good exercise routine to get her tired out!
I’ll keep you posted after the visit to the specialist.

Please join me in welcoming little Violet! She came to RAGOM from a surrendering owner whose dog had a surprise litter of pups. Violet came to us along with a sister and a brother. They are all adorable black fluff balls.
Mom is a Golden Retriever/Black Lab mix (and beautiful), and dad is a Lab/Newfoundland mix. The pups pull from that mixed genetic heritage and all three look slightly different, but they have one thing in common—they’re so cute!
Violet is 7 weeks old. She had an initial vet check because her stool was so loose. She had Coccidia and was put on medication. I can already see the difference—she feels so much better! Other than that one issue, she is a healthy and happy pup.
She goes back in for a follow-up appointment to get her first vaccinations when she is 8 weeks old. She’s also scheduled for her pediatric spay surgery. Once she bounces back from that she’ll be ready for her new family!
When Violet first got here she was little Miss Independent, but as each day unfolds, she’s the first one who seeks me out, and she’s the first to come when I call for the puppies.
What really changed things, I think, was when I started talking to her. All of a sudden she was making good eye contact, and she just melted in my arms. She is so sweet—and smart! She has a spunky side too, and when she gets cranked up she is hilarious to watch doing zoomies and wrestling with her siblings.
Violet is a wonderful pup, and under the care of someone who will work with her, make sure there are lots of opportunities to challenge that curious mind of hers and develop her social skills, she’ll make an incredible companion.
