Lucky 05-204

Profile

Lucky was a stray Golden Retriever that eventually was taken in by a Humane Society. Because Lucky was a stray there is very little background information about him. We began fostering Lucky, Saturday, July 16th, at our home in Fargo, ND. Lucky has had a severe injury to his rear, right leg in the past which did not heal properly. Consequently, his range of motion in his right rear leg has been reduced. When standing he puts most of his weight on his left rear leg. His right rear leg has less muscle mass. Last Tueday we had Lucky to the vet for a wellness check. He said Lucky's right rear knee (stifle) is thicker than normal so he may have actually fractured it from the past trauma. The good news is it doesn't seem to cause Lucky any pain and he gets along fine with both walking and running. While at the vet Lucky had all his necessary shots and is now up to date. He also has a very serious, contagious, upper respiratory infection for which the has vet prescribed antibiotics. He is scheduled to be neutered August 4th, if his infection is all cleared up by then. His appetite has not been very good and we have had to hand feed him. He only weighs 59 pounds and is about two years old. He looks thin. So he has a birth date, we decided to use July 4, 2003. The vet thought that would be very close to his actual birth date. He gets along nicely with our two Goldens and has a very nice temperament. He is not very energetic and sleeps alot but that could be due to his infection and the medication. He likes to stay close to either Liz or myself most of the time. He hasn't had any accidents in our house and is allowed to go anywhere he cares too. He sleeps on the floor next to our bed at night. Once Lucky gets over his illness and puts on some weight he will be a gorgeous looking boy. We feel very lucky to be able to foster Lucky and help him get back to a healthy Golden Retriever. He is a real winner!!

Lucky's appetite has greatly improved since we started to foster him. Now he can hardly wait for you to put his dog food in his dish at meal time. He is definitely gaining weight and loooks more like a healthy Golden Retriever should look. We continue to give him two cups of dog food in the morning and also two cups in the evening. Occasionally he will drink his water laying down, but stands to eat his dog food.

He loves to race around the fenced in back yard in sort of a figure eight pattern. It is amazing how fast he can run, even though he has had an injury to his right rear leg that did not heal properly. When standing he tends to put most of his rear weight on his left rear leg. I have also increased his daily walk to over a mile now and it doesn't seem to bother him. He loves to go for a walk and can hardly wait to get out the door. He also loves to romp and wrestle with our resident Golden, Hank, so he does get lots of excercise. They like to play tug-o-war with some of their toys.

He is a real love and loves to be petted and sit quietly by your side while you talk to him. He is fully house trained and has the run of the house even when we have to leave for awhile. He is a lighter colored Golden and his coat is really starting to look quite nice. As I have said before, he will be a great Golden for some lucky forever family.

Lucky is a very nice Golden with a very nice temperament. He gets along nicely with both of our resident dogs. When we first got Lucky we had to hand feed him, but now his appetite is back to normal and he can't wait to dig into his meals. We currently feed him 2 cups of large breed, puppy Eukanuba in the morning and 2 cups in the evening. He only weighed 59 pounds when we got him but appears to be gaining some weight now.

He loves to go for a walk. I have only been walking him about 3/4 of a mile on his daily walk because of his past right rear leg injury which did not heal properly. He seems to start to lag towards the end of the walk. When he is standing in a stay position he seems to put most of his rear weight on his left rear leg. Although, his rear leg problem certainly doesn't seem to slow him down at all when running around the back yard with Hank. It does appear his right rear leg may be a little shorter than the left leg.

His is a real love, likes to be petted and give kisses. He is not an excessive barker. He will bark if he hears a strange noise in the night. He also enjoys laying on the upstairs bed closest to the window so he can look out and see what is going on. He seems to like all the toys Hank likes, so occassionally there gets to be a tug of war between the two, but nothing serious. They both get along great are always at the back door to greet us if we have to leave for awhile. Lucky has full run of the house and isn't ever crated. Although, he will occasionally go into the crate we have in the kitchen, which always has the door open. He most likely picked that up from Hank, because Hank likes to go into the crate and rest, and anything Hank likes to do he thinks he should, too. He continues to enjoy sleeping on the floor in our bedroom at night. Lucky is going to be a great companion for some lucky forever family.
