Lucky 08-022

Profile

Lucky arrived tonight after a long car ride from northern Wisconsin, where he had been left tied up outside the local Humane Society. They estimate his age to be around 8, but his teeth are as clean as a 1 year old dog so I’m going to have the vet re-check that when I take him in this week, he may be a bit younger.

Lucky is neutered, good around kids and cats, and has gotten along great with my dogs - he is just a sweetheart. He was very nervous tonight, poor guy, and paced the house for the first hour, but has now started to settle down and look a little less worried. While I was writing this I looked for him and he had disappeared. After searching the house I found him on my daughter’s bed (see the picture below), how sweet that when he wanted to find a safe spot he chose being with the kids. He’s definitely a golden retriever!

I’ll write more in the next few days as we get to know him. I’m going to be bringing him to Petco this Saturday, January 12th, in Burnsville, so come down and meet this sweet guy!

This is LUCKY and he knows he is 'second' to Hungry Henry, but he is making himself at home! Lucky was adopted 3/2008, and has almost trained us into believing he is FIRST!

Saturday, March 1, 2008

I haven't been as good about updating Lucky's webpage lately; he's been at our house for almost 2 months now and Lucky's days have pretty much become a fun, comfortable routine - no big discoveries for me to report anymore! Having a daily routine has made Lucky's confidence bloom and 95% of his first-week anxiousness has disappeared. What does his day consist of? Well let's see: helping foster Mom put her shoes on in the morning (Lucky's motto: if ya can't see 'em, ya can't tie 'em, and ya have to scratch my belly), waking up the kids, hanging out with foster Mom and the kids, watching bunnies, squeaking his big squeaky tennis ball, going on a walk and digging for voles in the snow (someday, says Lucky, I'm going to catch one - mmmmmmm), going on car rides to drop off and pick up kids (he even passed the 20-minutes-alone-in-the-car-with-Chipotle-burritos-under-the-front-seat test), sleeping at home and staying out of trouble if foster Mom & the kids go somewhere without him, telling everyone how much he missed them when they get home, watching bunnies, lounging on the dog couch, following foster Mom wherever she needs to go in the house, avoiding the cats, and - one more time before bed .......watching bunnies. Then it's off to his bed (see the spoiled dog in the picture below) to snuggle up and rest so he can do it all again tomorrow!

I haven't taken new pictures of Lucky in awhile so went outside today and got some fun ones of him chasing the tennis ball, he is clumsy as all getout! But boy does he love the tennis ball. Notice when he jumps how each leg is pointed in a different direction....true clumsiness at it's best... And I also got one of him helping tie shoes, something I talked about in an earlier update and had to prove it with pictures.

Lucky has learned another new game this week, it's called "let's wake up the kids." He seriously gets all excited for this each morning now. After he's been let outside and eats his breakfast, I'll head upstairs and say "come on Lucky, let's go wake up the kids!" He now BOUNDS up the stairs and waits at the first door. When I open the door I say "wake-em-up!" and he leaps onto the closest bed, crawls ONTO the child in the bed, and then pants very stinky dog breath in the sleepy child's face while sitting on top of him. When the offending child continues to sleep (usually trying hard not to smile and show me he's awake) Lucky nudges his head and shifts his weight around. Then, when I point to the other bed and say "wake HIM up now!" he leaps onto that bed and proceeds to sit some part of his 72 pound body on that child. Then he looks at me expectantly waiting for me to tell him it's time to move on to the next room. In this room, the occupant of the first bed is usually grinning wildly and giggles when he comes up to visit her and gives him a bear hug, while the second child in this room either giggles or pulls the covers over her head depending on the day while waiting for him to come and sit on her. Today, Lucky took his skill to a new level: the sleepiest child tried to block Lucky out by lying on his back and putting his knees up in the air. Lucky, showing superior talent, proceeded to climb up over the knees, and literally sat on the child's knees, with his front paws on either side of the child's stomach and his body resting up in the air on the child's knees. That's my boy!

More exciting news of the week: Lucky barked! After almost 3 weeks of silence, he has finally found his voice. Twice that day the kids and I had heard a soft "woof" from his direction and had looked at each other saying "was that Lucky???" But we couldn't tell for sure. Then later in the afternoon one of my other dogs was out in the yard and starting barking like crazy when somebody walked by with a dog, and Lucky went to town "woofwoofwoof-ing!" He has a nice mellow bark, not one of the sharp type that make you squint (that would be one of my dogs) or the beagle type arooooooooo (that would be my other dog), just a nice mellow woof! He hasn't done it much since then, but a little one here or there.

Two more new details about Lucky: today when I fed Lucky I held the food up for a minute and he stood up and balanced perfectly on his back legs (think like a poodle does). With a little work you could teach this dog to do some pretty funny tricks. The other thing I have found is that Lucky likes to carry socks around. Hasn't chewed them at all, just carries them around and licks them a little if they're especially stinky. It actually comes in kind of handy when you have kids shedding their socks every time they step in a wet spot left by dog paws.

Lucky is really wishing that the person out there who has been reading about him and knows in their heart that he's meant for them would hurry and contact placement, he's trying to be patient but this house is a zoo and he really wants to know what his forever home will be like. If that's you, contact placement as soon as you can!

Well, we're continuing to learn more about Lucky and he's continuing to learn more about us! One thing I keep forgetting to mention: we STILL haven't heard Lucky bark. Not one peep. Which is funny because at the shelter he barked a lot in his kennel (keep in mind a bunch of other dogs are barking too which gets them all going). But here, not one bark, even when my two dogs are barking like crazy at someone they see out the window. When he first comes inside in the morning he does this whining grimacing thing still, but that's the only sound he's made!

We also found out that Lucky likes cheese. My kids graciously left an open package of string cheese on the car seat, and later that day I put him into the car to go the vet and invited him in right next to it (yep, I didn't see the cheese). Well, here I was telling Lucky what a good boy he is in the car, and we get home and here is this empty plastic wrapper on the floor from which he has carefully extracted the string cheese. No mess, no noise - stealth eating. Then two days ago my kids left a block of cheese (fortunately there was only a small bit left) smack on the edge of the island, then left the room for an hour. When I came up later, there was just a neatly cleaned out wrapper. Now that he's figured out the kids leave him "treats" sometimes, I'll see him - well, actually, I see the top 1/2" of his nose circle around the outside of the island. It's kind of like a shark fin, sniffing around the edge to see if any disobedient child has left food out. I wouldn't call him an official counter surfer, he's not obnoxious and leaves 99.9% of things - he's what I call a "counter opportunist."

I haven't been able to do a lot of training, but Lucky is learning that if he whines and wiggles when he comes inside that he doesn't get attention, but if he quietly sits his butt down and looks at me with big brown eyes then he gets all sorts of pets and praise. He also knows "go to your bed" for when he wants to wake up early and play but foster mom wants to wait until the alarm goes off. He just trots back over, hops into his chair (life is rough at our house), and goes back to sleep.

We'll keep filling you in as we learn more about Lucky!

Hi everybody, Lucky here. I just got on the computer and read what my mom wrote yesterday, and SHEESE - I mean, would she want ME to get on the computer and list all HER bad points? So I decided I need to do today's update and defend myself. First off - in the interest of full disclosure, I have not even looked sideways at a corner in THREE days. You've got to cut me a little slack, when you've lived outside your entire life are you really supposed to KNOW there's a difference between the corner of the house in the yard and the corner of the family room by the hallway? Apparently they are different and I've learned that if I just go to the outside one then Mom doesn't have a hissy fit. And speaking of Mom, did you know she actually STEPS on me when we're taking walks? I mean hel-lo, the path is 6 feet wide, does she need to walk into my rear end? I finally had to walk way on the other side of the path from her because I was afraid the kids were going to learn some bad words.

On top of all that, did she even mention how much HELP I am around the house? Noooooooooo, of course not. Well, I had my kids help me take a few pictures today to prove to you just what a catch I really am. Take a look:

Me babysitting the girls while Mom is busy.

I tell ya, by the end of the day I'm just exhausted from all this work. And do they pay me? Not one cent, not even for babysitting! Unless you count all those treats I get (burp). OK so they pay me a little. Anyway, so how many dogs are you going to find in this world that perform all those tasks? Yep, we're a rare find, I know it. So pooey on all that stuff Mom said yesterday. In my own humble opinion I'm brilliant, lovable, and modest to boot. And don't let my foster Mom tell you anything different or I'll have to get back on the computer to defend myself again.

Your humble friend, Lucky

Lucky's new development in the last few days is a very long, low, satisfied groan he does at night when he lays down. Kind of that satisfied, I'm so tired and this bed feels sooooo good sound. And if he changes dog beds he does it again when he gets to the new one, just a short groan so we know that his new bed feels just as good. He's such a character! Another funny thing: Lucky won't let me now leave his sight, EXCEPT when there are bunnies eating outside the back window. Squirrels just don't do it, he'd rather follow me to another room. But bunnies - he's just transfixed and will sit still watching them for an hour. If I could pay the bunnies in carrots when I had to leave the house and be guaranteed they would stay until I got back, I wouldn't even crate him when I was gone because I would know he wouldn't move a muscle!

Lucky has been with us for about a week now, and we're starting to get an idea of what kind of home would be best for him. Most dogs go through an adjustment period when they are adopted, and Lucky will be no different, so I'll try and outline what things you will help him with as he adjusts to your home. Lucky is going to take a little longer than your standard dog to adjust, and his new family needs to be OK with that. Because he was abandoned (or it could be because of his home life before then, we'll never know), Lucky needs lots of reassurance each day and he needs to feel safe. Both are pretty easy: you need to give him loads of love, give him a routine he can count on each day, and you need to be OK if he follows you from room to room for - well for at least a week because he's still following me! Lucky's nervousness surfaces at the oddest times: when we go to bed at night, and when he first sees you after you come home or after you let him in from a potty break. The nighttime nervousness is pretty much gone already, at first he paced, now he just keeps changing dog beds until we turn the light out then he's out for the night. When you let Lucky back inside (after 2 minutes or 12 minutes) he starts to whine and makes a funny grimace with his face, like he's just so glad to see you he's overemotional about it. This lasts about 30-60 seconds or until I distract him with a toy. Then it goes off like a lightswitch and he's our mellow yellow Lucky again.

Lucky will be an easy dog to train, he is SO eager to please and will be so thrilled someone is spending time with him that he'll learn fast. He has marked in the house a few times so will need his family to watch him like a hawk the first few days and catch him if he tries it - he has been an outdoor dog his whole life so just needs to be told. He's so smart that he even knows "don't even think about it...." - he started sniffing the corner he had marked on his first night here and when I said that he immediately stopped sniffing and walked away!

Lucky is starting to know the routine of our house and loves it - you should see him plant his back end down by the door at walk time! And, he loves bedtimes and travels from bed to bed as the pictures below show. Check out in the first one, when our dog Red had beat him to the bed, Lucky got up and stuck his head under my daughter's arm trying to get her to pet him instead of Red!

If you're looking for a very sweet, very easygoing, very grateful dog to spend your days with, Lucky's your man. Email placementatragom [dot] org and come and meet Lucky at the Richfield PetSmart this Saturday and you'll fall head over heels in love.

Each time we foster a dog, I try and think about what that dog has gone through so I can help them adjust into our household. With Lucky, it just breaks my heart to think of his family driving him to the shelter in the middle of the night, tying him up outside with a note attached (Hello, my name is Lucky and my birthday is May 26, 1999.....), and him watching them drive away. I wonder what went through his little mind, wondering when they would come back, thinking they had forgotten to let him get back in the car, probably panicked and not knowing what to do. Then he has to live in a kennel with no family to love him for 3 months where people come in to see him from 12-3 and 5-8 daily, then back to his kennel. I truly think that right now, Lucky is living with a constant worry that this will all go away and he'll be left again soon. It takes time to convince a dog that you aren't going to give up on them, and that everything in their life is going to change. Lucky is feeling safer every day and you can see his confidence building.

OK, enough serious stuff! We are learning some fun stuff about Mr. Lucky. He absolutely LOVES tennis balls, he's just giddy when you throw them. (Think: "ohboyohboyohboy!") He wears the Gentle Leader on his walks like a pro - he's just so darn happy to go on a walk he doesn't care what the heck you harness him to! A Gentle Leader is a good idea though - he doesn't pull much but if a bunny happened to cross your path you might find yourself launched into a high speed chase if that Gentle Leader isn't on.

Lucky went to the vet yesterday and weighed in at 72 lbs, the vet said he's at a good weight but definitely should not be any lighter. He had an infection in his right ear so is getting some ointment twice a day for that, and is in otherwise great health.

I'm guessing that Lucky was an outside dog before he was left at the shelter, he absolutely loves sitting at our sliding glass doors and watching the bunnies and squirrels that come and eat under our bird feeders. He will sit there watching for 30-45 minutes at a time. The pictures below give you an idea of how he spent his day yesterday....
