I would like to introduce you to one of the newest members of the RAGOM family. This is Lucky. Lucky is a 90# medium to dark colored PB. He is truly one beautiful boy. Lucky has been with us a couple of days now. Lucky was surrendered because his previous owners were older and were moving to a place that where they couldn't take Lucky. Lucky is neutered and also appears to be house trained. I have been watching him and no accidents yet (knock on wood). We went to the vet today and he is currently up to date on his shots and was micro-chipped. He passed his exam with flying colors and did great during his exam. The vet did suggest that he come down on his weight since he is a little on the heavy side. So we are reducing his food to 3 cups a day.
Lucky definitely needs to be on the gentle leader when taking him on the leash. He does well on the gentle leader (although he does try to get it off sometimes). He appears to take direction very well. He knows how to sit and lay down.
When we first introduced Lucky to our resident dogs he was a little snarky (growling), but then again so was one of mine. I think he was the only dog so he may not be used to having others around that he has to "entertain". Plus our Lola never lets anyone rest for a second, so poor Lucky has had a dog in his face every second that she is around him. He does tell her to "knock it off", but of course Lola is not one to give in. I think he has done well with them seeing how he has only been here a couple of days. At the vet today another dog came in and he was a little snarky again, but I corrected him and he stopped instantly. I think he could benefit from some ongoing training.
I also think that he should be in a home that has older children and one where his owners are active. I think he would benefit from the exercise. The reason I say he should be with older children is because he is bigger and stronger than some of the goldens we have had before and could easily knock a child over. We also had an issue where Lucky mouthed one of our younger children. I did not see the incident so cannot tell you the circumstances surrounding it. After the incident occurred we kenneled Lucky for a while and watched him around the kids. We haven't had another incident since so he may have just been startled when he mouthed my son. It's just something to take into consideration. Please understand that if he was a biter he would not be allowed in our home, so I hope one incident does not deter someone
from an otherwise great dog.
Lucky is very quiet except if someone is at the door or he sees them walk by. I have never heard him bark otherwise. He has no interest so far in tennis balls. We haven't tried stuffies yet but he doesn't seem like a stuffie kind of dog. He has a little resource guarding with rawhides. I think this issue could be resolved by never giving him rawhides or with the extended training that he needs anyway. He is not afraid of the vacuum. In fact he was right by my side, "helping" me.
He is a typical golden in the sense that he likes to be near people and will actually give you kisses. He was WONDERFUL while I clipped his toenails and brushed him for like 45 minutes (he had lots of mats that needed to be removed). I have yet to bathe him, but if he behaves like he did with his other grooming he will not mind it at all. We
shall soon see. :)
So if you are interested in a really great dog, Lucky may be the one for you. Thank you for taking the time to meet one of RAGOM's newest members. We will keep you posted on all of Lucky's progress while he is with us. I think he will make someone very 'lucky' to have him as an addition to their family.
Take care!
