2/18/07: Lucy is a 10 year old purebred Golden Retriever. She is an owner surrender from a family that had her since she was a puppy. Lucy had been an outside dog all of her life, but now that she is older she needs to be in the house more and so she was surrendered to RAGOM. She is used to kids, dogs and cats, loves to ride in cars.

Lucy is a typical senior girl. She just loves to be with you and get lots of pets and attention. She is house-trained and is very well behaved in the house. The owner information that came with her said she does have a little storm anxiety and is scared of fireworks. She will probably do better with the storm anxiety when she is in the house with her people rather than being left outdoors in the storms.

Lucy has allergies and because of that she has very flaky skin and runny eyes. We are working her onto a very good premium dog food so I hope that will help. Lucy is up to date on her vaccinations. We will get her to the vet this week and get her checked out and also micro-chipped.

More updates to come as we get to know Lucy better.

Lucy's Nest - she likes to lie in the middle of the hose when it's on because it feels cool to her body

We have been watching Lucy closely this week. Starting late last Saturday night and continuing on thru Tuesday, Lucy had been having diarrhea accidents in the house. What worried me more was that they were tarry black in color. I decided to sleep on the couch at night so I would be able to hear her and let her out in time. She was urinating a lot more and not eating quite like she used to. I took her to the vet on Tuesday AM. She checked Lucy out and she has lost 4 pounds since February, she has a pot bellied look to her and her back seems so bony. Her stool sample came back negative. The vet wasn't sure if the predisone was causing some sort of bleeding since her stools were black in color or if it was the progression of her cancer, possibly into the intestines. She put Lucy on Metronidazole which should help firm up her stools and also a Pepcid pill which should help her from forming ulcers. I was told to check back with her on Friday (today) to see how things were going. So, on the pills we went and a bland diet of boiled chicken, her dry food and potatoes. She loves the food and eats like there is no tommorow. She is in good spirits, her tail is always a waggin, but no stools for 2 days. I got worried thinking she was blocked up, so I checked with the vet and he said not to worry unless she was vomiting (which she wasn't), so I waited. Finally on Thursday afternoon I decided she was feeling better to go on one of our slow walks - I figured maybe if she was more active it might get things moving (if you know what I mean!). So out we went and a half block from our house she finally pooped!!!! IT WAS A MIRACLE! I was so happy because her stool was solid and brown in color. Yahoo!! You would have thought that I had just won the Lottery. I rushed back home to show my husband - let's just put it this way, he was not quite as happy as I was!! Today again on our walk she had another normal stool. I checked in with the vet and and she also thought that was great news, but to call her if they change back to a tarry black color. We will keep her on the Metro until Tuesday and the Pepcid she will be on indefinitly. The vet said let her eat what she wants and if she wants to go on walks let her do whatever she wants to do. She loves her walks so much!! So hopefully things will be looking better for her. Last Monday night I let all the dogs have free roam of the house together, which I have done now for the last two weeks since they all get along so well together (not a growl or a snarl ever once). Well, when I came home, I'm guessing Regis and Lucy got into a little scuffle (possibly over Lucy pooping in the house) which I came home to. Lucy had a nick on her ear. It was bleeding slightly but it wasn't deep, so as a precautionary measure I took her to the vet last Monday night and they applied a glue bandage to her ear. So from now on when we are away from the house we are putting Regis in a different room from the others. When we are home they all hang out together and get along great! Lucy enjoys her puppy massages that we give her - her favorite spot is behind her neck - she stretches her neck out and squints her eyes shut. We all love her, she's such a dear!!
