After 11 years as a member of our pack, we let our Lucy girl go on Oct 3. She had developed Laryngeal paralysis and had a sudden turn for the worse and we knew it was time to let her go and breathe easy once again.

Lucy was our practice baby. Her Dad and I adopted her while we were still dating. She was with us as we were engaged, and then married, as we worked on turning our fixer-upper house into a proper home, as we brought home our human baby, and then as we moved to our forever home in Red Wing earlier this year.

She was a committed shoe and sock stealer. There wasn’t a stick of butter that was safe from her counter surfing, and she was our “lifeguard Lucy” on countless trips to our family cabin where she got to run, roll, swim, chase, and play to her heart’s content.

She was infinitely patient with all the tiny humans in her life and never once got annoyed with their affections. She was a spitfire of a puppy who aged into a wonderful companion, and we will love and miss her to the ends of our days.

Hi RAGOM fans! Mom says "sorry!" for it being more than a year since our last update. We've been busy I guess.

Let's see - where to begin. Well, I got a new job. I used to be chief foot warmer for my Mom and Dad's small business but now, I'm a RAGOM home visit doggie! Mom says I'm great at greeting everyone enthusiastically and showing people what "puppy energy" is. The hours are great and the benefit package is lovely. What dog wouldn't love pets and scratches from adoring fans?! I get to go with my Mom to her regular job sometimes and I really like saying hello to everyone who walks down the corridor to the conference room near my Mom's desk. I get "happy feet" and prance around and people think I'm adorable. (well duh! Of course I am!)

I'm doing pretty good in my room and not chewing up too much stuff during the day although I did attack and kill my frisbee one afternoon. RIP frisbee - you were a very good toy. I still collect socks and shoes. My folks are remodeling their kitchen so I've added work gloves to my list of things to add to my treasure trove. They are a little bit worried about this remodel because they won't have anywhere to put a gate up anymore and my nose is often my guide. They said something about being diligent but I don't know what that means. Anyways, I only had one "oops" when I knocked down the baby gate to my room when Mom accidentally left the blinds open so I knew she was home but hadn't come to let me out yet because she was unloading the car. Lets just say, I found my own way out! (see photo) Mom is surprised that I haven't tried it more often now that I know I can just barrel into it and it will fall down. I don't want to push my luck and I'll wait to try it again when there is something really good in the kitchen for my nose to find. *wink*

We went to the cabin this weekend and the ice was starting to melt off of the lake. There was about 2 feet of open water and I was having a blast jumping in it and drinking it. I even "dug" some of it up to make myself a little lake water slushie. Yum yum! We spent two whole days enjoying the sunshine and warm temps. I came home and was exhausted! There is a St. Patrick's day parade up there every year and we went to it again this year. My parents let me wear beads on my collar and I look very Irish. Lots of people pet me and tell me how beautiful I am (well, duh!). Some of the parade floats even give me my own treats! How cool is that?! I really think that the Humane Society has the best entry. Dogs? Treats? Perfect combo. If I were the judge, they'd win every year.

And last, but not least, I got a 2 legged cousin last year. He's almost one and we're just starting to get to know each other because he's imitating my walking style these days so we're in the same zone so to speak. Mom and my Aunt watch us very carefully together because they don't want my puppy energy to end up knocking little cuz on his rumpus when he stands up. I am very interested in licking him and smelling his face. He's very interested in my wagging tail. So far, so good! I politely ignored him when he crawled up behind me and picked up my tail and poked me with his fingers. I totally knew he was there but I just let him figure me out. I have a feeling we're gonna be pals. When he gets a little bigger, I'll be happy to help him dig a giant hole on the beach! *grin*

Lucy here!  Time for another update on my fabulous golden life.  Last time I updated you all, it was summer time and there was no snow to be found.  HA!  Look at it now!  I LOVE snow.  I love to eat it, run around in it, roll in it, and generally play play play!  My parents wish I would play less in the mornings when we're out to do "business" though. If you haven't guessed already, I pretty much love everything and am one happy puppy and barrel through life with endless enthusiasm.

We went camping!  My mom and dad weren't so sure how I'd do with it but they didn't want to not bring me on those kids of trips so they gave it a shot.  I had my very own pop up kennel in the tent with my bed in it, and I had a staked cable for when they were hanging out by the fire and stuff since doggies aren't allowed off leash in the state park campgrounds.  I decided it was my job to ward off the red squirrel that kept coming up on the table and chewing on stuff.  It was public enemy #1 in my book - which was OK with Mom because she doesn't think that it is natural for wild animals to come that close to people and gets creeped out by them.  I got to lay on a blanket by the fire at night and didn't get scared from the smoke which is what my folks were most worried about.  And I ONLY tried to knock down their screen tent with my tether once.  Not bad!  It was really cold out at night while we were there and Mom was worried I'd be cold so she got up in the middle of the night and tried to cover me up with a blanket.  I wanted NONE of that.  Pssh - I'm a dog.  I've got my own fur coat weirdo!  After that, I was worried that MOM would be cold so I'd sneak up on the bed and lay oh so gently on top of her to keep her warm.  Oh - mom said to tell you that me laying down gently just doesn't happen.  Ever.

Anyways, we went for hikes along Lake Superior's shoreline, I played in the water a little bit - wasn't sure what to make of the big waves since they don't get that big at the cabin, and we also hiked along a cool river with a big waterfall.  I stuck to the trail pretty well without letting my nose lead me astray since we couldn't walk at a "heel" like I'm used to with the trail being pretty narrow.  I even got really good at pacing myself while going up and down the steep parts so that I didn't pull anybody down.  I'm a smart cookie!  After that trip, my folks decided that next year, I am carrying my own gear and got me a cute red backpack.  I'm "in training" right now and they take me for walks around our neighborhood (which - lets be honest- with this much snow is sort of like climbing mountains at every street corner) and have it full of--- soup cans.  Yep - they apparently think we're going to starve on our walks and make me carry pantry items.  How embarrassing.

I've added to my repertoire of favorite things to eat - anything my mom is cooking.  :-P  She's kind of a messy cook and drops a lot of stuff between the counter and the stove and I'm happy to be the clean up crew!  (I might also "help" the spilling process along by laying in the middle of the floor.  *wink*)  Seriously though, I adore bananas and apple peel is amongst my all time faves.  Scrambled eggs - and once - when we were camping I got leftover BACON!  Wow!  I LOVED bacon. I also really enjoy shredding the toilet paper rolls and sometimes abscond with them when they're not quite empty.  For some reason that I don't understand, my Mom doesn't like that.  *shrug*  Whatever!  My newest learning experience is going to be sleeping in my room without being locked in a kennel.  My folks think my kennel takes up "too much real estate" - whatever that means and think I might be ready to be penned into my room during the day now that I'm three and more mature.  We're going to try it this weekend and if I do okay, someday I might get free roam of the house!  That'd be awesome.

Lots of Golden Retriever/Yellow Lab love!

From Lucy (fka Carrie)...

Hello Internet World! Guess what?! My Mom and Dad are getting married next month - see they adopted me together when they were still dating each other and now it is time for wedding bells! I didn't get an invitation though - Dad said something about there being Butter in the frosting of the cake and since I can't resist butter, I have to go to Woof-Da instead. I'm ok with that - I really liked Woof-Da. I also might have decided to chew up my Mom's wedding shoes so that may have had something to do with it too. Oops! I at least gave her enough time to order another pair... see how considerate I am?? The new ones are still in their box and up higher than I can reach so I can't nibble on those for her too to make sure they're good enough.

Mom and Dad are going to the cabin for their honeymoon without me - I get to stay with Grandma and Grandpa instead. I'm really kinda bummed out about that because we haven't been up there much this summer since they've been busy with wedding stuff. Grandma and Grandpa haven't had a puppy who is as busy as me at their house for a long time. They have already had to start "proofing" it for me - whatever that means. Whatever it is, it sounds serious. Right after Mom and Dad get hitched, I am getting a new cousin because my Aunt Ali and Uncle Tom are getting a Flat Coated Retriever. They live in Chicago but hopefully I'll get to meet their new baby at Christmas. I can't wait to have a young dog around to play with - that will be so much fun!! Mom's cousin just got a baby Airedale and they have a cabin by ours. It is going to be like going to the dog park but with a lake to swim in!

Speaking of swimming, I am not afraid of jumping off the dock anymore. See the photos below! Sometimes I jump off the dock just for the heck of it. Everyone laughs at me because I jump mostly straight up in the air and then manage to get out far enough to land in the water. I can't be a dock dog competitor unless they have a category for vertical distance rather than horizontal.

My favorite toys in the whole world are tennis balls and my hunting buoy and both of them float in the water. How cool is that?! I can chase those all day.

I don't really like it when people go swimming without a lifeguard so I make sure they stay safe by swimming out to them and hauling them back to shore. Mom was not happy with me when she was floating on a mat out a ways and I decided she was in danger and I wouldn't let go of her arm until we were all the way back on shore. Apparently that wasn't ok and now when people are swimming in deeper water, I have to be on a tether.

Until next time!
Lucy

From Lucy (formerly known as Carrie)...

Dear RAGOM world - would you believe that I have been adopted for almost a whole year?? I've done a whole lot of new stuff this year - it is amazing that I can keep it all straight. The first thing my new mom and dad did was to take me to puppy kindergarten. I was a tad on the social side but they did let me pass. My new Grandma would come to watch class because she said something about it being the best free entertainment she found in quite a while. Not sure what is so funny about puppies trying so very hard to behave (or not, let's be honest. All I really wanted to do was wrestle). Sheesh! I had to wait until I was spayed to go back to school though. That was not very fun but I made the best of it. When my Mom came to pick me up, they told her that I was "little miss sunshine" and went with the vet tech to greet all the other sick animals in their care while I was staying with them. I got to go back to school after that. I ended up being the 3rd best dog in my class! Not bad for a dog that got sent to the principal's office on the second night for being unruly.

Let's see - what else. Oh! My new Grandma and Grandpa have a cabin on a lake that I get to go to a lot. We have even gone up when it is cold outside! I ran out onto the ice after my ball once and boy was that fun. Have you ever seen the movie Bambi? Me either. But Mom said that is just what I looked like - sprawled out on my tummy when my legs slipped out from under me. Woah was that a surprise! I stayed off the ice most of the time after that - it confused me. Where did the water go? I like swimming too. I don't go out by myself and always have a buddy because I'm still a little kid ya know. I also will not jump off the dock without a buddy - even though my toy is out in the water and I really want to go get it. Mom and Dad said that maybe this summer we'll get that down. I have to be on a tether up there when there are other people around because I get distracted and forget where my boundaries are. I got in a lot of trouble last summer when our neighbors brought up their new Shitzu puppy and I ran over to play. *sigh* I can't help it, I like to play!

My Mom and Dad say that I'm very smart and because I'm so smart, I get in a lot of trouble still. I have to brag, I know how to open every single garbage can in the house including the one with the little foot pedal thing. That one is really fun! I also know how to knock the lids off of the others to get in there. I also know what I want to be when I grow up - a lap dog! I try to practice a lot now but nobody seems to appreciate my talents. Mom and Dad say I'm a little stinker. I want to set the record straight right now - I do not stink. I just had a bath thanks!

My Mom also says that I am part cow. Isn't that funny? I don't look like a cow! But - I do have a thing for dairy products. I can't resist them. Butter is my FAVORITE and cheese is pretty OK too! If my parents forget to shut the gate to the kitchen or even leave the butter on the counter too close to the doorway where I can put my paws on the gate and stretch my neck out to get it, I will be right there eating it up. My other favorite things are stealing socks and shoes. I don't eat them anymore, just parade around with them so that my parents will chase me. If that doesn't work, I fish something out of my Mom's purse - like her sunglasses. That ususally gets a reaction.

I'm pretty brave and am not scared of much. Riding in the car used to scare me but that is because my tummy didn't feel very good when I did that. I have medicine for that now though and riding in the car usually means we're doing something fun so now I'm excited about jumping in. I am still afraid of smoke though. When my parents use the self cleaning feature on the stove, I hide under the bed. I don't like campfires much either but my parents said something about wanting to take me camping this summer so we have to work on that. Oh! I saw a squirrel run into the yard so I have to go check it out. My mom attached pictures of me for you to see. Bye!

Hi Golden Lovers!

Guess what? I’m moving in with my new folks tonight! I came and I conquered all at FM’s house, now it’s time for me to work my charm on C & J. I love them already. When they came to pick me up tonight, I ran towards them as fast as my little puppy paws could take me. It’s hard to run fast when you’re wagging your tail and wiggling with joy!

I showed them my puppy piranha routine while they were trying to complete all the paperwork. I love to hide under the kitchen stools and chew on any unsuspecting toes that dangle down anywhere near me. Gotta go – it’s time to meet my new Grandpa and Grandma, snuggle with my new mom and dad, and officially kick off the start of my new golden life. Oooh, I just can’t wait to go to the lake this summer and hang out with all the great dogs I’ve been hearing about!

Thanks, RAGOM for rescuing my three sisters and I. I sure had fun at FM’s.

Ps: Thank-you, Belle and Cody 07-149! I loved wrestling with you and chasing your tails. Thanks for teaching me all those neat tricks like sit for treats and get my dish.

Hi Everyone!

Last night two really nice people came over to play with me. They were really fun and let me climb all over them, give them puppy kisses and even chew on their toes! They called FM today to tell her they really wanted to play with me forever. Hurray!!

I wish I could go play with them right away, but they have a vacation planned that’s been in the works for awhile. They promised FM they would come and get me as soon as they got home. In the meantime, I promise I’ll make FM takes lots of pictures of me. You know, ‘cuz I’m so cute!

Lucy (my new name!)

Hi Everyone!

How did you like my newest trick today at PetCo? I played dead the whole time I was there! I had FM worried because I was being such a mellow pup – I didn’t even rouse to play with my sister, Miranda 08-165, even though she did her best to make me play with her. I felt bad I made FM fret, so when we got home I went back to being my typical puppy self – very fierce!

Speaking of tricks ~ I’ve learned quite a few in just these five short days. I’ve been watching my foster sister, Belle at dinner time. FM tells her to “Get Your Dish” and Belle brings it to her and puts it on the counter for her to fill up with kibble. I thought that was a really cool trick so I tried it too, and guess what? FM not only had the camera nearby, but she even managed to capture me in the act – in focus! Wow!

Today, I also learned how to escape the x-pen. Of course, I was in there for a reason – FM had some business to attend to and needed to keep me “safe”! Hee hee! She’s going to need to find a safer way because I escaped! She heard me barking and carrying on and all of a sudden, silence! Frantically, she went looking for me, opened the door and there I was – waiting for her! She can’t figure out how I got out and I’m not telling. A girl has to have a few secrets.

I hope you like my stories and pictures and want to meet me. I’m a character if I do say so myself. I’m also a pretty strong willed little girl. I don’t care that Belle and Cody are way bigger than me. I dive right in and wrestle them to their knees. FM says I’d be a great WWE Diva Dog. Please contact Placementatragom [dot] org and ask to meet me. I’m so adorable I know I won’t be a RAGOM foster for long. And besides, puppy kisses only last so long – you won’t want to miss any of mine!

Carrie

P.S. FM says I have to tell you that I’m the most efficient pup she’s ever seen in finishing my business, if you know what I mean. Gosh, this is embarrassing – why would anyone want to know that?
