Lucy MO 07-354

Profile

June 2007:  This little girl is Lucy.  She is expecting a litter of puppies any day now.  Lucy comes from a hoarder in Missouri who had 40 dogs inside her home.  She was brought to a shelter when authorities were notified.  Lucy is 46 pounds and is grossly underweight.  Her ribs, spine and hip bones protrude from her skin, she is missing patches of her fur due to mange.  She also has tape worms, which she has taken meds for.  She is a Golden mix.  She just turned 1 year on April 1st, and this is her SECOND litter!  The poor girl hasn't even had the chance to be a puppy.  She is very timid, but is slowly coming out of her shell.  When I returned home last night and walked toward her crate, her tail flopped a little.  This morning, I went upstairs to get something, and turned around and she was there, wagging her tail (which is half gone) behind me!  She tends to seek us out, even if the kids are being wild.  She lets them pet her, and she is calm around my dogs and cats.  We are trying to fatten her up before she starts labor, so that she is as healthy as she can be, for herself and for her pups.  I'll update again either when I have more info or she has her sweet pups!

Lucy did great at the PetSmart event last weekend. For the first time, she just laid down in the car and didn't pant hard the whole way. I think she's learning that the car can lead to a fun and exciting activity. She was a little startled when the automatic doors opened, but then continued on in with tail and head up! I was very proud! A lot of people who met her would ask if she was always this calm. She mostly is, but can 'go nuts' and play and run around too. She particularly loves when we get a new foster and we go outside. She prances around in front of him and is always asking to play. She loves to run and can go really fast. Once again, she would do best in a home with kids 5 and up and who are dog savvy. It's more to protect her than anything. When a kid comes up to her that she doesn't know, and tries to hug or lay down on her, she doesn't know what to do. She will let my kids (ages 5 and 8) lay on her and hug her, but she knows them and knows they won't hurt her. She will also need another dog to continue to guide her, as mine have helped her come a long way. Please let placement know if you would like to come and meet her!

Lucy continues to do well. She LOVES the snow, and will just lay out in it for as long as possible. She zips around at top speed and does quick spins, always running back to me for a pat. She likes when I jump in place and crouch like I am going to come and get her. It's so nice to finally see her relaxed enough to play like the puppy she is. She cornered a chippy in our wood pile and dug like crazy to get to it, to no avail.

I have attached a couple of new pictures, but she does not like the camera, and the camera doesn't seem to like her--she is much cuter in person! The one of her under the Christmas tree will go on our Christmas card along with one of our kids and resident dogs (she didn't want to participate when we were taking the kid picture). Please let placementatragom [dot] org know if you would like to meet this coming-out-of-her-shell girl.

Lucy did great at the PetSmart event. She was a little shaky at first, but by the end, she was butting in to get her fair share of pets. One of her puppies, Robin (now Remy) stopped by to visit her (they are in one of the pics below). He didn't seem to know her, but she was interested in sniffing him. I think she might have recognized him. Thanks for stopping by--it was great to see him again!  Lucy continues to thrive at our home. She's one of the gang, loves the other dogs and is gentle with our cats. She likes to play with our kids and run and jump from sofa to the love seat. Big Rusty 07-624 likes to try and get her to play, but I think he can be a bit intimidating, as he outweighs her by 100 pounds! She has come to like baths. She no longer tries to escape, and after she's out of the tub, she has to tear around the house like a maniac. She gets really excited to go outside, and likes to give her cute howl/bark while she's waiting to get leashed. Once she's outside, she tears around with our Cocker Spaniel.  She'll also pick up our kids' soccer ball (which she popped) and run around waiting for someone to chase her. She also enjoys it when the neighbor's dog is let out in their chain-linked yard. Their dog and Lucy will race each other back and forth along the fence. She is really happy when she's running, and boy, can she run fast! She continues to wait for that perfect home, she definitely is Golden--she just may not look it!

Lucy did great at Grandma's and Grandpa's--no accidents and she was allowed free roam when we left! Grandma even let her up on her sofa! Lucy has grown leaps and bounds from the first time we saw her. She looks younger, acts younger, and finally plays like a puppy. She'll let one of our cats rub all over her and she even gives him licks in his ears. Just a couple of days ago, my Cocker was laying across her paws, and Lucy gave her a bath, treating her just like one of her puppies. She enjoys our kids, and we believe that she acted snappy toward them only because she was guarding her puppies, and truly didn't know if they were going to hurt her or not. She has not acted like that in many months. She actually runs to the door when our kids get home and gives them the 'where were you?' howl/bark that she does. (We love when she does that). She is just the sweetest, gentlest girl, and loves to be brushed, petted, wrestled with, anything that gives her attention. Don't let her non-Golden looks fool you, as she has a pure Golden heart and acts like any purebred Golden out there.

Lucy continues to thrive at our house.  She really has fit in as one of the pack, and is getting braver by the day.  She now goes up to kids when they come over and she lets them pet her.  If they stop, she'll even give them a nudge to keep it going!  She enjoys gathering all the soft stuffed toys and either collects them on our bed, or on her dog bed downstairs.  She will even run after a little tennis ball and if I throw it, she'll come galloping back for more.  She gets excited when we come home, and is usually the first to greet us at the door.  She is learning that she gets lots more love and attention if she is sitting instead of putting her paws on your chest.  She does no resource guarding, and is very polite around the dog dish, sometimes too polite, and I have to tell her that the bowl in front of her is all hers.  It's like she is waiting for permission to eat.  She has gotten along with every dog she meets, both male and female.  We recently brought in Dexter 07-592, and she accepted him like he had been here forever.  She is truly a great little dog.  If you are interested in meeting our Lucy, please contact placement and let them know!

Lucy did really well at the picnic. She was shaking a bit from the ride down, and then was a little disconcerted with all the people and dogs around her, but by the end of the day, she was relaxed enough to lay down and nap in the grass. She continues to do well at home. She sleeps all night on her dog bed in the corner of the bedroom. Sometimes she will jump up and sleep with me. She likes to snuggle and put her head on my pillow. She has the coldest and wettest nose I have ever felt, and she likes to stick it in your face early in the morning. It is a shocking way to wake up! She is really into us petting her and can be quite insistent if you stop, doing the 'nose under the arm' thing to get you going again. She has really gotten close to our Cocker Spaniel. This morning they were both lying on the sofa together, with Ginger laying across Lucy's front legs. Lucy then started to give Ginger a bath by licking her ears and cleaning her up. Now this is really big, as my Cocker does not like when dogs touch her, unless they are playing rough. So it was very cute to see, and of course, I did not have a camera near by to document it!Lucy also gets along well with one of our cats, Oliver. He'll rub up against her and she'll just sniff him and give him a lick or two. As you can see in one of the pics, they are laying right by each other on the sofa. (Yes we do let Lucy on the sofa now and then, it's hard to say no, as she just LOVES the soft stuff!)She is very good about listening to the word 'No'. If she picks something up that is not hers, all we have to say is a low 'Noooo', and she will drop it with a guilty look. She now sits on command, and we are teaching her to not jump up on us when we get home, or when she is excited. She is learning that she needs 'four on the floor' in order to get a pet. She is a very sweet girl, and I will thoroughly miss her when she finds her forever home!So here are the following items Lucy needs:

  • A yard with a fence, invisible fence, or family that is willing to take her out on a leash every time she goes out
  • Another dog for her to wrestle with and watch for cues on how to act
  • Kids that are 10 or over, or that are at least 5 and over (we have a 5 and 8 year old that she does really well with). We believe her snappiness was due to her litter of pups, but to be on the safe side, older kids would be best, or kids that are dog savvy

Lucy had her staples removed from her spay last week, and the surgery site looks really good. The vet weighed her and she is 43 pounds. They believe that this is a good weight for her, so she is going to stay small and she will be easy to lift if necessary. She is doing way better in her potty training. She has about one accident every 2 weeks. Now that she doesn't have her puppies to play with, she is more active with our resident dogs and cats. She and our Cocker (Ginger), run around the house chasing and wrestling with each other. Ginger lets Lucy know if she gets a little rough. Lucy will also let one of our cats rub himself all over her. She just sniffs him and wags her tail. Our other cat is very timid, and for some reason our dogs always pounce on her when she shows herself. Lucy has picked up on this and will also pounce (she kind of hops like a rabbit), but never hurts Peanut. Lucy also greets people at the door now and is way better in letting them pet her, she's not so scared of them. We will be bringing Lucy to the RAGOM picnic, so here is your chance to meet this girl!

I just picked Lucy up from the vet where she was spayed. She is doing well and is a Velcro dog to the extreme! As you can see in one of the pictures, she has her head on my knee. I think she missed us! It is actually hard to type this update, as I am sitting on the floor next to her and she won't let me stop petting her.As you can see in the pictures, she loves anything with padding, the footstool, her bed (with her son Robin), even our sofa pillow! If it's fluffy and available, she is on it!She is now officially available for adoption! Please let Placementatragom [dot] org know if you are interested in meeting Lucy.

Lucy is very quickly saying goodbye to her pups.  Six of them went to their forever homes this weekend!  Once they are all gone she will be able to be spayed, and then will be able to go to her forever home!  As I have said before, she is really starting to romp and play.  Because of her coloring, shorter tail and floppy ears, she looks like a doe jumping around out in the grass.  I finally got some good pictures of her.  Whenever she sees the camera come out, she turns her head away, so I am constantly running circles around her trying to get her face!  She is very sweet and loves affection.  Whenever I bring out the brush for my dogs, she likes to butt in line and get brushed first.  She has really easy fur to brush, so it doesn't take long, but I brush her extra because she loves it so much.  She also likes to check up on me and always know where I am.  One night this week, I slowly came awake from a deep sleep to someone poking me in the back.  I rolled over and Lucy was there poking me with her nose.  I patted her on the head, and she went back to her bed in the corner and laid down.  I guess she wanted to check to see if I was alive!  She really relaxes once she gets to know you.  She still is timid around strangers, but we are working on it with lots of neighbors coming over to visit.  She still will need to have a family with a dog, and either no kids, or kids over the age of 10, and a fence or invisible fence would be good too. Sorry that Lucy did not make it to the Art Fair.  Due to the bridge collapse, it made for a very long drive for us.  If you would like to meet Lucy, please contact Placement.

Lucy is doing great. We are heading off to the cabin this weekend and bringing all her pups (and our 2 dogs)!  That should be quite the adventure.  She is back to producing milk for her pups, so we don't have to feed them as often.  I'll write after we get back from the cabin and let you know what Lucy thought of it!
