Luke 11-348

Profile

Hello Ragom families!  I would like to introduce you to Luke 11-348.  Luke is a 3 1/2 year old PB Golden.  He is petite and very blonde by our house standards.  The resident golden is 110# and very red. Luke was surrendered by a loving family that just didn't know how to deal with a few of his idiosyncrasies.  His original bio indicated that he was terribly afraid of going down stairs, hoses, baths and having his nails trimmed, and that he has a tendency to pee when he is excited or frightened.

We just had Luke's vet appointment and he is UTD, HW Negative and generally a healthy 77#.

I will say that we were looking forward to our house guest for a couple of weeks.  The resident golden, Bear, loves having a playmate that can match his energy.  The resident senior, Buddy, tolerates Luke just fine, and Luke learned right away which of the two was going to be a playmate.

Luke has only been with us a few days, but we have already learned a few things about him:
*Luke walks fine by himself with a flat collar.  I will be incorporating walks with multiple dogs in the next few days.
*Luke is willing to share his treats, toys and food.
*Luke did have a problem with excitement peeing, and he had to be carried down the stairs the first two days.  However, I am happy to report that Luke has gotten over that fear and is racing up and down the stairs on his own.  We will continue to watch the excitement peeing.
*Luke is very interested in critters, I have a fenced yard with a 3-4' fence and he respects that, but I think he would run if he weren't fenced or leashed.
*Luke is quite a talker, but does not bark excessively.
*Luke is a lover and when his tail wags his whole body shakes.
*Luke has had some obedience training.  He knows sit, down and off.
*Luke is happy to sleep the night through on the floor next to the bed.
*Luke has earned the run of the house with the other dogs and has not chewed anything or gotten into anything that he isn't supposed to.

I am sure that we will learn more as we go along, but Luke is a lover.  He has a lot of energy and will require a home that has a lot of attention for him.  He would like to have a playmate, but I think he would be fine alone if he gets enough exercise.

Updates

It has been 2 years since we brought Luke home with us so we thought it would be a great time to give everyone an update on how he is doing.  He has been a wonderful addition to our little family and we have loved him from the very first day.  It took him a little while to get used to his 2 parakeet siblings living in the same house but now we can completely trust him home alone with them.  In fact, his favorite spot to hang out (and fulfill his neighborhood watch duties) is in front of the window right next to the bird cage!

Luke is very spoiled and gets 4 walks daily regardless of the weather which occasionally includes a morning run with Daddy if it's not too cold or too hot.  He loves visiting the dog park to meet new friends and his favorite pastime is stuffing as many toys as he can in his mouth.  I think his record is 5 toys.  At night, he sleeps on the floor right next to our bed and he loves to wake us up in the morning by whacking his tail against the bed.  We also celebrated his 5th birthday last summer with a yummy Dairy Queen vanilla cone.

Thank you RAGOM for bringing us this sweet boy!!

Luke had a good appointment with the vet.  He was cooperative and very well behaved.  The vet noted that Luke had tested positive for Anaplasmosis in November 2010.  He continues to test positive.  Anaplasmosis is a tick transmitted disease similar to Lymes disease.  The main complications of active Anaplasmosis are fatigue and joint inflammation.  The good news is Luke shows no outward signs of either fatigue or joint pain.

He is an exuberant young dog.  After he wore out the resident golden, Bear, he was persistent enough to get my almost 14 year old lab/heeler mix to play for a few minutes.  I can't remember the last time I saw Buddy prancing and bowing.

The mild winter has been great.  I have taken Luke out for several walks and one run.  He is a great running partner.  He will walk on a flat collar or with his gentle leader.

After his first week here we had a couple of incidents around the food dish.  This was easily remedied  by feeding the dogs one at a time.

Once he has gotten his exercise in for the day - his favorite thing to do is curl up on my feet.  He is really quite a sweetheart.  Why don't you give this boy a look and consider making him a part of your family.
