Luke was adopted on Sunday, February 2, National Golden Retriever Day. He made a long trip from North Dakota to Iowa and was a perfect passenger.
Thank you to Luke's new mom and dad who will dote on him every day, all day! Luke would also like to thank the angels that put their heart and souls into bringing him to America.

Happy New Year from Lukey Bear! Luke was happy to spend the holidays in a nice, warm home and we are so glad that he has become a part of the RAGOM family.
Luke has continued to be a perfectly well-behaved boy in his foster home. A typical day for Luke is as follows:
- Foster Dad wakes the boys up at 6am for breakfast and potty break.
- Lazy boys go back to bed until about 7am when Foster Mom and Foster Sister wake up.
- Back outside for potty break and wrestling match.
- 8:30am everyone leaves and the boys free roam about the house.
- Usually about noon Foster Sister or Foster Dad come home for lunch break and sometimes lazy boys do not even get up!
- 4pm Foster Dad returns home and boys go for a walk—usually one mile and some days up to three miles, depending on the weather. Some days the walk is later in the evening, depending on when all the humans arrive home.
- 5pm supper time and spend the remaining evening lounging on the couch or playing for short bits outside in the yard.
- 11pm bedtime—Luke prefers to sleep in the open living room/dining area on the couch even though he is allowed in the bedrooms.
Luke has still not had any accidents in our home. He is a very laid-back gentle fellow. We have had a lot of visitors to our house and he is well behaved. He rarely jumps but if you are on the couch or sitting on the floor, he has no regard for your personal space and will sit in your lap. He has also been known to put his butt on your face!
The only inappropriate item he seems to still have a liking to is Kleenex. He does not counter surf.
Due to the weather it has been difficult to work on his dog-on-dog interactions. We rarely see the regulars out during the winter months. He and Buddy are walked together, and we keep distance from other dogs out walking.
He has graduated to looking at other dogs for just a moment and moving along. If another dog is in our path we cross the street to give him space and work on desensitizing him.
Most days we use a harness while walking. He does still need work on his leash manners. He pulls but we manage him well. Luke likes to do his business on his walks and waits patiently while we clean up.
We had a substantial snowfall last week and Luke is enjoying playing in that white stuff. He likes to make snow holes to rest in or just stick his head in! He also enjoys watching out the window for the squirrels and bunnies.
Luke has gotten the hang of the routine here. Foster Dad is on a rotating schedule so sometimes he will have someone home with him for days on end. The boys get pooped out as we are cutting in on their nap time those days.
Luke has been an absolute joy to foster, and he is hoping for his forever home in the new year. Even though he is not dog-daycare, dog-park, or dog-festival savvy, there is someone out there who can meet his needs and give him the wonderful life he deserves! Could that be you?

Lukey Bear has been in his foster home for almost three weeks and has been a complete joy.
He has had two vet visits and has received a clean bill of health. Luke did have low pressure in his left eye. We treated that with drops and the doctor said it is looking fine. The only follow up is to keep watch on that eye for irritation. It has not bothered him since he has been in our care so we do not foresee issues in the future. However that is not a guarantee.
He did also have some worms, which we have treated, and he will need a follow up fecal check in about three weeks. He has gained 3 pounds since he arrived and at this point just needs to gain a little bit more. Luke is looking fantastic!
This guy has a full, wonderful coat. He will need full-body comb-outs every few days to prevent matting. Luke cooperates fully during his little grooming sessions and loves to be pampered. He does not shed as much as we would have expected with all of his fluff.
Now you may have noticed in Luke's requirements that he "needs to be an only dog." Luke would like me to explain a little bit about that! He is living peacefully in his foster home with a 3.5-year-old male Golden. This Buddy he has here is about as mellow as they come. This Buddy does not get into Luke's business and just likes to hang out with him.
They will have a wrestling match outdoors usually once or twice a day. Bones have been put away as that is the only thing the Buddy will not let Luke take away from him. The first three days Luke was here he was kept on a leash and crated several times throughout the day to observe his new surroundings and learn that the Buddy was A-OK.
While Luke was in Turkey he did get into some scuffles and did not show any signs that he was agitated or jealous of the other dogs when he acted out. If you do happen to have another dog in your home, it will need to be very calm, passive, tolerant, and not get into Luke's business. It must also be the same size or larger.
Luke spent a couple of days at dog daycare for assessment with the training staff. He did pull on the leash and growl at other dogs. He growled at them through the barriers. He did not like small dogs at all and he cannot be with cats. Luke is the type of dog that will need to spend more than a few hours with other dogs before he can get along well with them.
Going forward in life he will need an experienced dog owner who will take him to controlled socialization classes and continue to work on this behavior. Luke wandered the streets alone and we can only imagine the situations he may have found himself in during that part of his life. Some dogs never like other dogs, so that is also something to keep in mind!
Luke is a runner so a physical fence is a must. Great care will need to be taken while getting in and out of the car (he LOVES car rides) and going in and out of doors or gates where he may get free.
This handsome guy has a soft mouth, loves his toys, free roams, is potty trained, and is gentle with visitors and children he has been exposed to (ages 9+). The only inappropriate item he likes is Kleenex so care is needed to keep them out of reach. All of the garbage cans are tucked away in his foster home. We would not doubt he would dig in garbage if it is left out—that's what street dogs do!
He sleeps peacefully all night either on the couch or the floor in the bedroom. Luke takes his treats gently and is treat motivated. He needs a little work on the leash but is manageable. Overall Luke is very calm and will peacefully lounge around. He is a very good boy and he does know "sit" and "shake" in English.
Luke will require that his new family is dedicated to long walks daily. He was home alone for three full work days and was very restless the third night. We could definitely tell that he needed more exercise to tire him out as he and his Buddy just slept all day.
The people who saved Luke have informed us that he loves to swim. His foster in Turkey could not keep him out of her pool! On Luke's wish list is someone with a lake, whether that be a lake very nearby, a summer lake home, or ideally a permanent home at a lake.
