MacGyver 11-005

Profile

MacGyver may be the sweetest, silliest foster we have ever had!  He arrived over the weekend and has made us laugh and smile since then with his playful, happy spirit.  MacGyver will be three in April, and is a neutered purebred GR.  He is wonderful with both my resident Mia and foster 01-240 Honey.  MacGyver is also crazy about my 6 and 9 year old kids, but I think his most favorite thing is his blanket!  He has a full size bed blanket that he pulls around the house, sleeps on, plays with and shakes in his mouth.  It’s the first time I’ve had a dog with a blankie! J  MacGyver is a wonderful dog, and was clearly well cared for and loved throughout his life.

He was surrendered by his family due to allergies and a possible torn ACL (anterior cruciate ligament), which is one of the ligaments connecting the bones of the knee joint.  MacGyver has a vet appointment this weekend so we can get a better idea of what he needs to help with his allergies, and how to care for his ACL. In the meantime, enjoy his photos – he is a very handsome GR!

It’s been four weeks since MacGyver’s surgery and he is doing very well. He was limping quite a bit last week after a morning walk, and was not putting much weight on his leg for several days, so we stopped back to the vet for a check-up.  He had another x-ray and everything looks good.  He’s back on Rimadyl, and we slowed down his rehab a bit and this week he is doing so much better.  Minimal limping and each day he places more weight on his foot.  We welcomed a new beautiful girl 11-067 Lexy into our house this weekend, and she just loves MacGyver.  Such a smart girl….everyone loves MacGyver!

MacGyver had surgery for a torn ACL and meniscus earlier this week which was a great success!  He has wonderful hips and once he recovers from his knee surgery, he has a wonderful future ahead!  MacGyver has been in pain for some time, so this surgery was a wonderful gift – thank you RAGOM.  We started an eight week recovery period where MacGyver’s activity will be limited, with controlled exercise and physical therapy.  He isn’t feeling well this week between tenderness from the surgery and having an upset stomach from the medicine, but he is on the road to recovery!

His skin looks better than when he first arrived.  MacGyver is eating high quality dog food, and remains on his diet to lose 6 more pounds.  He also is taking antifungal medicine for his allergies and has a nightly massage with a medicated lotion (he loves being spoiled ).

I can’t say enough nice things about this special boy.  He is so affectionate and grateful for everything – attention, treats, toys, just being near people.  He’s a really special boy that has captured my heart!

MacGyver had his hair done over the weekend and he looks gorgeous!  We are waiting to hear when his surgery will be scheduled, and in the mean time, we are walking every day as he needs the exercise to lose weight, but needs to have controlled exercise so he doesn’t feel discomfort with his knee.  He is also on the dreaded “green bean diet”, to help him drop calories but feel fuller.   MacGyver still loves his blanket, and any and every toy he can get his paws on!
