Maggie 02-303

Profile

Maggie arrived here on Friday and she is so sweet as long as she's being petted she's in heaven. Maggie is 8 yrs old and looking for that special family to retire with. Totally house broken, and learning what a gentle leader is, she will make a quiet family very happy. She still has plenty of energy and loves to play. More after her vet appointment.

Hello RAGOM friends,

I'm writing with a heavy heart and lots of tears to share with you our lovely best friend Maggie has passed away to a new place.

She was diagnosed with kidney disease/failure on Sept 1, 2010. We absolutely treasured spending a lovely warm fall, another Thanksgiving, Christmas, AND....celebrated her 17th Birthday on January 16th with her!! She made it through early spring and passed over to her sweet beach in heaven on April 26th. Our awesome vet, Dr. Tim Hunt, let us know he's never seen a golden live such a long, healthy life.

Up until last fall, she was running up the steps, fetching sticks, rolling in the grass and snorkeling in the snow. She, of course, like all of these beauties, had the purest heart and brought joy to our greyest days. She was timid at times to very certain things: skateboards, brooms, fireworks, some vets, & ALL beagles (!) but moreover was the most kind, generous soul we are so so grateful to have had in our lives for over 8 years.

I must tell you one thing that has brought me through some difficult, sad, sleepless nights when Maggie was in the vet hospital overnight with her IV and now since she's gone, has been to read about the amazing stories from foster parents of other little pups who will hopefully soon join their families they're meant to to be with and will bring light to their lives, as Maggie has done for ours.

We give all of you amazing volunteers, fosters, administrators, transporters and big lovers of dogs so much credit and admiration for what you do for the dogs and in turn, for the humans who benefit from your work. Thank you, thank you for the gift of Maggie!!

Love,
Joy & Chris

Four pics of Maggie loving life!

Greetings RAGOM friends,

It's been a while since I've sent a donation or an update on Maggie, so today's the day for both!

Maggie had her GOLDEN Birthday on January 16 this year and, well, turned 16! She has been happy, healthy and remains to be the furry, red, light of my life. In September, she was diagnosed with kidney failure and together we had a very difficult couple of weeks. She spent over 2 weeks receiving fluids through an IV, a few long days of which were at our vet hospital and rest at home. My husband and I made the commitment to work as hard as we could to help her, but to allow her to let us know when enough is enough. Despite our vet's prediction of her not being able to walk again, one day I arrived home from work and she was standing up, wagging her tail, smiling and proud as can be. She's continued to improve, eat, walk, beg for treats and walks (just sticking to the yard) and say hello to her favorite neighbors. We are immensely grateful for this time with her.

Working through this process has reminded me of how grateful I am to all of you at RAGOM as well as to the family who chose to surrender her to you. Thank you for the work you do...especially for the dogs, but also for current, past and future adopters of dogs.

I'd love to see Maggie's picture and bio back up on your website, if possible. I've checked several times for it, but can't seem to find it. Here's a couple newer pics.

Thanks,
Joy

Here is a new picture of Maggie. Maggie went for a nice long walk and came home with pricklies. I haven't had time to comb them out yet so she is laying near me pulling them out herself. My two young nephews loved Maggie and frequently apprised their mom of her fine qualities. Mom didn't take the hint, so Maggie Mae is available to some lucky person who wants to go home with the Gold!

Maggie arrived at her new foster home and after a few days of stress is doing very well. Maggie slipped right into the household as if she'd been with us for years. Maggie is so sweet and well behaved in the house. She likes to be near us and will lay quietly near our feet, waiting for that next pat, hug or ruffle. Maggie loves to chew on rawhides, she chases the ball (although she isn't all that successful with catching it), and plays with stuffed toys. We have not seen her chew on anything inappropriate. Maggie knows what "outside" means and when let out she takes care of business immediately and comes back to the door. Maggie is a champ when it comes to being left alone while I am at work all day. When I get home, Maggie is so excited her feet spin and the tail wags. For now Maggie is limited to the hallway and bathroom while we are away. Maggie loves to go for walks (she loves to her me ask for her leash) and is a pro with the gentle leader - she is content to walk alongside us. Maggie responds to basic commands, although her response to "come" on a few occasions has been delayed while she finishes sniffing. Maggie surprised me the other day; I told my dog to stay while I went in the other room and Maggie also stayed until told them to come. Maggie is perfect for someone who doesn't want to start at the beginning with training a dog and wants a mature but active, loving Golden. Maggie does well with other dogs and respects their special place (crate, bed).

Maggie has been doing very well with her foot and dominance issues. All vet work was normal, her hips and eyes are in good condition. We had her evaluated by RAGOM's behaviorist after she bit Jon when he tried to trim the hair on her feet. She is a very sweet girl, she just gets nervous while being groomed. I'm guessing her past grooming experiences were not that pleasant. She loves to fetch and play rough, but wrestling should NOT be a part of her new family's repertoire, she gets too mouthy, and doesn't know when to quit. We are looking for a family without kids, though short exposure to kids would be fine as long as they are gentle. Also a person or couple willing to work on her foot and grooming issues would be ideal. If you're that person, please email us at placement.

I just had to get this in!! Whenever anyone goes in the bathroom for any reason, Maggie hops in the tub!!
