Maggie 09-039

Profile

Hi Everyone, I would like you all to meet Maggie. She is 2 1/2 years old. I picked up Maggie last Friday from her surrendering owner. Maggie came from a family that loved her very much. You see Maggie was going to be surrendered last January but they just could not do it. They thought with time she would come out of her shell more. The reason Maggie was surrendered now is because she is very shy and did not want to play with the kids, she would not have anything to do with them. She loved her owner. She would not go outside all by herself to go potty, all she would do is shake and pant. That is exactly what she does here now.

Maggie had never worn a collar or has not been on a leash, so that was a little challenging. When I take her outside she needs a lot of talking to and happy praises. I had to finally put a harness on her because she would do the bucking bronco and try to get out of her collar. Every day gets better.

Maggie has her safe corner in the bedroom on the side of the bed where FD sleeps. I have her crated when I am gone, that was fun too, but now she goes in there when I throw a treat in it. That is her other safe spot.

She will not eat alone, I have to stand and wait for her to finish, but each time I move a little farther away from her. When I get too far she stops and runs back into the bedroom.

According to some of the story her surrendering family would tell me it sounds like she might have been a puppy mill puppy. So we are trying everything possible for her to feel comfortable here.

I will send a update next week to let you know how well she is doing. It is so hard to get pictures of her, so I will work on that.

I just wanted to let you know that Maggie 09-039 has crossed the rainbow bridge. She has had a few health issues in the last 3+ years with heart, high blood pressure, arthritis and then had a seizure on Wednesday April 7th 2021.

She has had a wonderful life and she was the best dog that I fostered and then adopted from your organization. Or should I say the best dog we have ever had.

From Maggie's forever family...

Today was a good day. Maggie was able to attend her first RAGOM Picnic. She did very well considering she went without her sister Charmin. We wanted to take Maggie there by herself to see how she did without Charmin, she is always following every lead Charmin has or does.

When we arrived she was very excited until the other dogs started coming towards her and smelling her. After about a half hour we took her down to the lake to try her out in the water. She did not know quite what to do. I took off my shoes and walked into the water with her. The next thing that happened was she walked into the water and she laid down in the water, it was the cutest thing and when I looked around at the other Golden's I also saw 2 other Senior Golden's doing the same. Then I picked up that wonderful tennis ball that she loves so much, I threw it into the water and she looked at it for about a second and off she went to get the ball. We let her play in the water for about a half hour and then we went up to the picnic to visit some more. When we got her she was so afraid of people but she has come a long ways now. She wanted everyone there to pet her. We found some volunteer neighbors of ours and she had to pet Maggie the whole time we visited. After being there for a few hours, into the car we went and she slept the whole way home. Tired Maggie.

Here are some pictures of her playing with the tennis ball in the lake.

Oh did I mention that we adopted her 1 month ago and we love her so much.

Thank you RAGOM for taking Maggie under your wings and letting me foster and adopt her and thank you everyone for reading up on our Maggie Girl.

Maggie, Mom & Dad and of course Charmin that has taught her a lot.

I suppose everyone is waiting to hear who adopted Maggie. Well, let me tell you about what progress we have had with her in the past 2 months or so.
I am sure you have heard of the saying "a day at a time," well with Maggie it is a week at a time. Every week Maggie makes some kind of progress. Right now, she goes for walks about 3 times a day and walks just great on a leash. She likes to go for car rides, she jumps right in, she still pants a lot in the car or truck, but if we go for a long ride she tries to settle down. Our black lab Charmin tries to play with her but she is still not quite sure if she trusts her yet. In one of the pictures it looks like she is having fun, but she is trying to get away from her, and Charmin does not give up. Maggie will run to one of us and hide behind our legs. Maggie loves her crate. She stills sleeps in it at night and when we are gone. I leave the crate open when we are home, but sometimes I have to close it so she will come spend some time with us. She does not like to share. She will growl at Charmin if she comes by her, but when I say that is not ok she lays down. She only has her favorite toys now and when she starts to share she can have many more. Maggie can go outside now without being on a leash. She does not go far. If she wanders, we just have to say "Maggie" and she comes right back. She is still afraid of strange people, but when they come back over a couple of times she is better with them. She even goes potty on demand. If I tell her to go potty she will go, so she is a very fast learner. I want to thank RAGOM for letting me volunteer and foster for them. Also VCA for taking such good care of Maggie with some of her medical problems and other foster RAGOM Goldens and to all the RAGOM fosters for providing homes for the healthy and sick ones and to help them find their forever home. If you were ever wondering about volunteering for RAGOM but don't think you can do it, fill out the volunteer application and someone will call you and tell you more about it. I did not think I could foster a Golden and try to find them a forever home, but it has been so rewarding. When you find that loving family for your foster dog you go on to another and help the next one out. Believe me you will cry when you let them go, but you will know that they will be loved in a family that you find for them. Ok, let me tell you who Maggie's new forever home is. Maggie has a new fur sister, and her name is Charmin, yes, Charmin the black lab. She will be staying with us forever. Yes, I am a foster failure. I have fostered 5 Goldens and almost was a foster failure 2 times before this... this time we will be Maggie's forever family. I have lots of pictures to show all of you that have been following her story. I know it is a lot but once she started letting me take pictures my camera stayed in snapshot mode. She still will not look at the camera so to get a picture of her looking at me is very rare.

Please check back on Happy Endings on Maggie's new adventures every month. Enjoy!
