I'd like to introduce you all to a very sweet, handsome puppy named Maverick. Little man Maverick is 15 weeks old and was born on 11-20-2012. He was born in a commercial breeding facility and came from the same breeder as Ruby and Jewel and the rest of the group of Golden's we recently rescued from South Dakota. Maverick has been with me since Monday. He and I would like to thank the wonderful RAGOM volunteers who helped bring him into RAGOM. He sends big puppy kisses and hugs to Kimmer, Karen H, Kris N, and Kelly B. I'd also like to thank Kris N for not only giving up her Sunday to take a road trip with Karen H and Kelly B to SD but for also keeping Mr Maverick overnight on Sunday, getting him vetted on Monday and bringing him to my house. It is because of all the wonderful volunteers and supporters that we are able to help pups like Maverick find their forever homes and save them from life as a breeding dog.

Maverick at his temporary foster home

Maverick weighs in at 27 pounds. He is a big guy with big feet and is in good health, no issues. He had his first round of puppy shots and was dewormed while still with his breeder. He will have his next round of shots next week and will be neutered. He will then be ready to go to his forever home. He is a very smart, happy puppy. He has had only a few pee accidents in the house but I watch him carefully and we take frequent trips outside. He often forgets to go potty when outside as he is busy playing with his foster siblings so we bring the rest of the dogs inside and then I take him out by himself which seems to work well. My crew is good with him, Raven and Rocco run with him and wrestle with him. Foster sister Willow was not sure about him at first but has now decided that she can play with him and likes to take all of his puppy toys....some of which she has already destroyed. I suspect she is a little jealous of the puppy and the attention he is getting but there have been no issues. Willow did teach Maverick how to go down the stairs on the first night with us and now he is a pro going up and down without issue. My old gal Jimmie is not too fond of Maverick but he has learned not to jump on her or try to get her to play. She does not hurt him, just growls at him and he knows to walk away. He is getting lots of good socialization with my crew and we have had non-stop visitors since he arrived at my house. The old saying of introducing him to 2 new people and 2 new dogs a day is being done and exceeded!!

Maverick does not like to be crated and barks, cries and howls when I put him in his crate. The first night I let him cry it out, took about 20 minutes before he stopped and fell asleep. He did the same when I crated him during the work day. Since he has been so good with housebreaking, I decided to see how he did sleeping in the bedroom with all of us for the 2nd night. He did just fine, slept all night on the dog bed right next to Raven. Not a peep. pee or poop out of him. Since then I've been letting him sleep in the bedroom with everyone and he has done fine, just chewed on my eyeglasses early one morning. I baby gate everyone in so he can not roam around the house at night and in the morning I am very quick to let him outside as soon as he wakes up. He does spend time in his crate when I can not take him to work and when I run errands. I am trying to get him used to the crate, seems like it is going pretty well but he still does cry and carry on for the first 10 minutes or so. He has peed in his crate when left for 4 hours during the day but otherwise has kept the crate clean....not bad for a 15 week old pup.

I am very fortunate to work for a very dog friendly company so Maverick joined me at work for a day and did great. No accidents at all and no chewing or getting into things. He charmed everyone, met 8 new people that day and did so well he has been invited back. One of the ladies at work taught him to sit for a treat within just a few minutes, so now he sits for a treat every time he comes in from outside and will sit before I put his food down. We did have a tough time finding a food he would eat....seems he does not like the typical small kibble and wanted to eat Jimmie's large breed senior food as it is a larger chunk style. I finally found a puppy kibble he will eat and he loves yogurt on his food.

Puppies are very cute and fun but are a lot of work and a life time commitment. Maverick will need someone who is patient, loving and able to deal with his puppy behaviors. He will require lots of training so he can be the great adult dog we all want. Puppies chew up things, often your good shoes or sometimes furniture, they have lots of accidents, sometimes on your expensive rug or in places that are difficult to clean. They require a ton of attention and work and you will undoubtedly have some sleepless nights as you get him accustomed to his crate. He will also need to be let outside during the work day, so if you work full time you will need to make arrangements to come home at lunch time, find a neighbor to give him a break or hire a dog walker to make sure he gets outside during the work day. You will be rewarded with a life time of love and companionship. I suspect Maverick will grow up to be a big boy, I'd guess he will weigh 70+ pounds when fully grown so be ready for a large dog that will need frequent grooming, will shed and will eat a lot of food.

If you are certain you are up to the challenge of a puppy, please contact your placement adviser so you can meet Little Man Maverick.

Updates

Thursday, March 7, 2013

Hello Maverick fans. Sweet little man Maverick has had a very busy 10 days and has now moved on to live with his forever family. Yesterday he visited the vet for an update on vaccines and today he was neutered. I dropped him off at 8 am and at 10:30 am I received a call asking me to come and pick him up!! He was already up and barking in his crate so foster mom left work to pick up the little guy, planning to take him back to work. However we ended up back home since he had a nasty bout of diarrhea, probably a reaction to the anesthesia. He recovered fine and was up and wanting to run around by the time his family came to pick him up. Good thing they will be the ones to keep him quiet for the next 10 days!! He charmed everyone at the vets office and at MNSnap and at my work. I think just about everyone who met him wanted to adopt him!!

Maverick will have a great life with two canine siblings, one Golden Retriever and one Black Lab. He also has two parents, one who is home all the time and as luck would have it today was his owner's birthday.....talk about a wonderful birthday present. Maverick is already enrolled in school and will be training to be a therapy dog. What a huge change in fortune for this very lucky boy. In less than two weeks he went from being raised to be a stud dog in a commercial breeding operation to being raised in a loving home to be a therapy dog. Thank you so much to all the wonderful RAGOM volunteers who helped to make this possible. Maverick thanks you and so do I.

I know we will see Maverick again and I can't wait to watch him grow up. Willow will miss her playmate as will the rest of my crew. Foster mom will miss the little man, he sure was a great snuggler and such a wonderful, handsome guy. Best wishes to Maverick and his family. Hope to see happy endings updates and maybe some play dates in the future.
