Max 05-129

Profile

Max is an 80 lb. light colored, neutered male. He is in good health, updated on his vaccinations, and approximately 4 years old. He has big feet for a Golden, and a very bushy tail. The vet thought maybe there was a little husky thrown in somewhere down the line.

Max has been with us for a only a few days and he comes from a fairly turbulent situation that has forced him to move several times. His original owner passed away shortly after she bought Max. He was then willed to her son, who did not treat Max very well. He was later "rescued" by a married couple who lived on a ranch in California. They had Max for about 3 years, until a divorce situation has left him looking for a forever home. He is a very good dog. He doesn't get into anything he's not supposed to, pretty mellow in the house, gets along with cats and other dogs. The previous owner said he is very good around children as well.

Max has taken to my husband more than he has me. Maybe it's male thing? Anyway, he is very loyal, sleeping by my husband's bedside all night long and waiting for him to come home at night from work. If you invite him up, he will snuggle in the bed with you, but otherwise, he has not been allowed on the furniture.

He very much enjoys being exercised, especially running. We did have an incident on his first day with us where he bolted out the door and ran to several of the neighbors' houses before we could lure him back. For this reason, Max will require an active family that can supply him with plenty of physical activity and a fenced-in yard. Part of this behavior may be attributed to lack of stability and being in another new environment, but he was also used to being able to run free on the ranch, so it is part of his personality, too.

He walks well on a leash, but he becomes "Super Dog" when he sees a squirrel, so he'll need to be on a Gentle Leader to prevent dragging his new owner. Max also enjoys playing with other dogs, but he has demonstrated some strong dominance behaviors with some other male dogs that needs to be monitored. You'll know when he is happy, because he moans and whines with excitement, especially when you're giving belly rubs!

I would recommend a home that is good sized with a fenced yard (not an invisible fence because of his love for squirrels) and a fairly active family for Max. I think he will do well with other pets, but because of his strong personality, he should not be in a home with small children.
