Max 07-573

Profile

Meet Max.  I am new to RAGOM and Max is my first foster.  He was found as a stray so we do not know much about his history.  The vet thinks he's 2-3 years old.  He's a neutered male, approximately 83 pounds.  You will find Max with a tennis ball always in his mouth.  He's deep red, skinny and could gain a few pounds.  Max is very mellow and walks fairly well on a leash with a Gentle Leader.  He is up to date on shots, will be visiting the vet again soon due to the detection of a heart murmur.  He is fine with other dogs but doesn't want to play with my daughter's 2 year old GR quite yet.  We have not heard him bark, but I have only had him for 48 hours.  Max is housebroken, has had one accident, but that was the first night - last night he was fine.  More updates as I get to know Max.

From Max's forever family...

This is Max. We adopted him about a year and a half ago from a very loving Foster Mom and Dad. Max was the first dog they had fostered with Ragom and I know they had a very special bond. With Max, that happens rather quickly. Max's profile on the website showed he had medical issues, which made me reluctant to consider him seriously. But once we met him, and saw all the other wonderful attributes he had to offer - it was a done deal. We have since discovered Walgreen's to have a very affordable Pet RX plan and the medication he requires each day is now very manageable - from a cost perspective. Max's transition into our family was an easy one and he continues to bring us much enjoyment. And we are in a routine of walking him as a family on a regular basis which is good for all of us. He does get excited when he encounters other dogs on his walk and there is probably more we could do to work with him on this. Recently, he spent several days getting dog sat by someone with a 4 month old puppy. He did very well learning how to control his strength and still find ways to play with this very small, energetic puppy. I was very proud of him.

Thank you to RAGOM (and all the volunteers) for all you do for these special dogs.

Foster mom is letting me do my own update this time - she's kinda busy tonight.

I had a great time on Saturday at Chuck & Don's - met lots of nice families. There were 2 little girls that kept throwing my frog for me to catch. Boy was I a happy boy. Thank you every one for stopping by to meet me and foster mom. There were a few barking dogs there. I didn't like them. I don't bark except when people come near the yard. I am doing very well. A lot of people asked about my heart condition and the cost of the medicine - $35 a month. My vet says I can do whatever I want. I have no restrictions. Foster mom & dad will tell you I can play for hours. No accidents while everyone is gone at work for 8 hours. But boy do I have the energy to play when they come home. We play ball and go to the park before mom goes to work in the morning. I continue to walk very well with my Gentle Leader. I played a little with Champ on Sunday but he is kinda a pest, likes to bite at my feet. But I chased him around the yard and it wore us out. He's only 2 so we both have lots of energy. I can be an only dog cause I like all the attention. I share my toys with Champ the pt resident dog but I usually get to the toys first cause I'm quicker. Foster mom continues to try and get us to play with each other. She has to hide the toys cause I would rather play with toys than other dogs. We are working on that. So I would be fine with other dogs as long as they know I don't play a lot with them. Although maybe as times goes on and I get bored with toys then I will play with Champ. He can hardly wait.

My perfect home would be as follows:

  • A fenced yard for me to play in.
  • Tennis balls or squeaky toys.
  • Kids over 8yr to play with
  • Cuddle time - I try being a lap dog.
  • Walking Companion- daily at least 2 miles.
  • Nice big pillow to sleep on, cause I am spoiled already
  • Lots of treats - like Culver's hamburgers and fries

We have had Max for 16 days now.  We can honestly say he is a keeper.  I would like to thank RAGOM for giving me Max as my first foster dog.  Everyone that he comes in contact with says what a handsome dog he is.  They can't believe he's so mellow for a 2yr old.  Lets first do his medical update.  After speaking with the Vet, Max has been diagnosed with aortic stenosis which is a genetic heart defect.  This means blood flowing out of his heart is obstructed,  and his heart must work harder than normal to pump blood through his body.  He is on a prescription which helps his heart beat more efficiently and will need to stay on this the rest of his life.  The good news is that Max's case is moderate enough that he has no activity restrictions.  He can happily lead the life of a normal dog, though he may tire more easily.  Max is not a good choice for a family that is looking for a running partner, but he would be a great walking partner and family pet.

He can play a mean game of fetch.  Foster mom & dad tire out long before he does.  He keeps going and going and going.  What does this all mean for Max in the long term?  It is hard to say right now, he is healthy, but there is a possibility at any time that his condition may deteriorate.  That doesn't mean he doesn't have many Golden years ahead of him.  Max doesn't know that there's anything wrong with him, he is a happy Golden boy who is waiting for the right family to take a chance on him.

Max had his first bath tonight.  He had been in the pool several times today, and of course mud from chasing the tennis ball and frisbee got him really dirty... .  To see him run you would never know he has this condition.  He's as quick as a bunny.  Max needs a fenced yard because he likes to lay outside and play with his toys.  Max does not have any storm anxieties.  The last few storms we have had, he has slept right through them; never bothered him in the least.  Has free roam of the house, no accidents.  No resource guarding, and no food guarding either.  Likes his food and anyone else's, like our daughter's dog Champ.  Max waits until Champ leaves and goes and finishes his food too.  Has never shown any aggression.  Likes car rides.  Comes to work with me once a week, everyone there loves him.  They can't believe how fast and quick he is.  Loves his toys, especially squeaky ones, and is not destructive.  I think Max could be great as a only dog because he likes all the attention.  But that doesn't mean there can't be another dog in the picture.  He still isn't interested in playing with other dogs yet.  Maybe next week.  Good with kids.  Don't know about cats yet I will try and find one to see.  Here is Max in his swimming pool cooling off.

If you are interested in Max let placement know.

I have had Max for 10 days now.  He is a very sweet and gentle Golden.  He has the best mellow personality that I have ever seen.  He is housebroken and since living at our home has not had any accidents.  I can tell you when he looks at you with those precious eyes you just want to melt. He has the big blocky head, muscular build and very red in color. They estimate that he is around 2yrs old. He is very playful and always wanting to play fetch. He loves all toys, especially squeaky ones. You know he was loved by someone before he was lost because he knows the commands come, sit, stay, and give.  Since living with us, he constantly has a toy in his mouth. He will sits in front of you and waits patiently till you throw the toy, then brings it back to you for more.  I'm sure he could go for a full hour, but he is still recovering from his neutering 2 weeks ago. He needs to be mellow for a few days yet until he fully recovers.

Max is UTD on shots, HW and Frontline.  Loves to be outdoors, so fenced yard is a must.  I think he would be fine as an only dog because he loves all the attention.  There could possibility be another dog at some point.  I have my daughter's dog here quite often and he does well with him. He does not want to play with him quite yet. He is more interested in the toys and attention right now. He is lying here by the computer as I type his update, his head on my lap.  I am sure in time, once he gets used to everything, he will want to play with other dogs. Does fine with kids and people.  I am not sure about cats because I don't have any.  I was told by a previous foster he was fine with hers and her dogs.

Loves Smokey bones from the Meat market.  Yes we have started to spoil him, we can't help it.  Sleeps by the foot of the bed on the floor.  He did try and jump up one night at 2am, but we told him no and he got down.  That was the only time. He learns quick; Max has free run of the house night and day.  I did come home during my lunch hour the first week after 5 hours and let him out and played for a few minutes, no accidents.  We don't let him on the beds or furniture, but whoever adopts him can do as they please.  Max would love to sleep in a bed.  Loves to be outside.  I have only heard him bark 3 times... . Max is currently not available for adoption.  He has a heart problem and we are waiting for the Vet to determine his treatment options and prognosis.  Max has settled in nicely with foster mom & dad.  More updates to come on Max.   Oh, did I say we are teaching him to go potty on demand?
