Please give a warm welcome to Max, a very handsome senior who will be 10 years young in April. Due to changes in his family's circumstances and not enough time to spend with him, his family asked RAGOM to find him a new home where he can enjoy his senior years with a loving family. I would also like to thank his family for a very generous donation that will help cover some of his vet bills etc. Max joins resident Jake, foster sister Dora, the pitty mix, and foster brother Sam 07-690.

I left from work to pick up Max and head for the vet.  I didn't plan well enough to remember my camera so I have no 'before' pictures only 'after' the haircut. Due to being an outdoor dog, Max had matting and some funky hair going on and it was easier to shave it all off, have a bath and put on a new collar and watch as his coat grows out beautifully for spring. Meanwhile I think a sweatshirt is in order at least for tomorrow. Though I think he is quite comfortable in the house without the 'coat' and it will help him to adjust to the indoor temps and living inside.

When a surrendering owner fills out a donation form and tells us about their dog it is to help us be aware of anything to watch for; ie chases cats, doesn't like squirrels, gets into garbage............and that one you should really pay attention to. I let the dogs out through the garage and they go out to the fenced area to play, potty etc and have the option to come back in the garage if they want. So this evening I let them all out for a play/potty break while I was on the phone. And suddenly a light bulb went off------GARBAGE----IN THE GARAGE------MAX  IN THE GARAGE. See where this is going. I went flying and sure enough Max had tipped the garbage can over and was generously sharing the turkey and bones with the crew!!!! RRRRRRRRRRR and bad foster mom for not paying attention to the part that said: 'likes to get into the garbage'!! I am so hoping I will not be wakened tonight by anyone doing the heave ho noise they make before throwing up....or worse.

Max is now up to date on his shots, is having his blood work done, is negative for heartworm, has the typical ear infection in both ears and so is on meds for that, was micro chipped and had 2 large masses aspirated and they will have to be removed as they interfer with the way he stands and walks.  We will get the results back soon and make the appointment for the surgery. At 88 lbs he is about 8 lbs over weight but I think going to feedings 2 times a day and playing with the troops, it should come off fairly easily. He was good as gold at the vet and when I returned they were finishing up shaving him ,and he finally just layed down and closed his eyes and let them finish up.   I had brought Dora with for a weigh in and he and Dora hit it off immediately and have been friends since then.

The meet and greet with Sam, resident Jake and neighbor Lake went well over all.  Lake is a year old and while Dora loves the in your face greeting, Max wasn't in the mood and let Lake know immediately........ Lake was soon on his back being submissive and all was fine after that.  Coulter the Cat made his appearance and Max was a bit too interested for Coulter, so we will watch and let him adjust to the cats.  Dora chases them and waps them with a paw, but not sure yet what Max will do.

Since Max is accustomed to being outside and doing his duties out side, we have had no accidents in the house tonight. He has played hard, took his treats nicely and is sound asleep. How it all goes with 4 dogs in the room tonight---I will let  you know.  He is a very sweet boy, doesn't act his age, loves to play with the dogs, chew bones, plays tug and nudges your hand for some lovin. He will be a joyful addition to any family.

Stay tuned for the continuing adventures of Max and the crew.

Updates

Wednesday, November 26, 2008

I know this is long and many pictures, but this is Maxie Man's last update.  On Monday the 24th after a trip to the vet, we found out his liver wasn't working (it turned out to be liver cancer).  Off to McD's to pick up cheeseburgers and fries, head for home and have lunch with mom and dad (foster brothers drooling while they watched him eat), then a frosty paw.  One last trip outside to play fetch and roll in the grass with the sun shining on his face, one last ride in the doggie mobile to see our favorite vets, Dr. Nancy and Dr. Jennifer and all the wonderful staff.  While laying on the floor next to Maxie, we helped Maxie Man cross the Rainbow Bridge.  Our house and hearts are empty and he will be missed beyond words.  I will miss his bear lumbering gait, hiding food, mopping up floors, head between the knees and big brown eyes looking at me with all the love in the world.

Some favorite Maxie Man memories...

  • A ball
  • A bone
  • A stick
  • A game of tug
  • A new foster to greet
  • A look of 'who me'
  • A nose between the knees for a scritch
  • A lumbering gait
  • A box of cereal eaten....and napkins, paper towels, toilet paper and garbage....
  • A kitchen bin pushed down the stairs, and bounty shared,  food bins and tupperware chewed up
  • A look of innocence
  • A ride in the van
  • A visit to the vet.......and girls giving treats and more treats
  • A PetCo event
  • A stay with Auntie Linda and inspecting every box and bag
  • A look of gratitude
  • A fast 9 months with us
  • A long goodbye that started when you arrived.............

Maxie, Thank You for teaching TM patience when you found food in cupboards and drawers, and slopped water from laundry room to kitchen, when you refused to 'move', when you didn't want to eat and needed to be coaxed......you taught him to accept, laugh, and in the end realize he wasn't in charge :)

We will miss you, Maxie Man, and are so grateful for the months you shared our home, our lives, and most of all for the laughs.

Love Mom & Dad.........you will always be 'ours'

Heading for the Rainbow Bridge

Tuesday, November 11, 2008

Hi Maxie Man here.  Well, thought I'd send in a quick update since foster mom is busy.  I have been enjoying the nice weather...up until today:(  Oh well it's too early for snow to last...right?  We had a new foster here for a while (she has already found her furever home) Ginger 08-518, and she would sometimes play tug with me.  She is more frisbee crazy and I thought it was a stupid game so didn't play.  I have some new non destructable toys, but they aren't as much fun as the tennis balls.  Now those I can defuzz and eat in nothing flat.  FM lets me play with the tennis balls as long as I will retrieve and bring back.  Jeesh soon as I do a little nibble nibble..........she's got that ball gone.  Mean foster mom!!!!

So I'm sure you all are wondering what's up in the blood department.....hhahahahah!!  The numbers are coming up slow but sure.  For now I will remain on prednisone for a couple more months, but don't get excited, I never have an accident in the house.  I have taught the foster parents to keep all food out of my reach  (outside of a recent blunder, FM left pistachio nuts and a brown sugar walnut mixture in a higher drawer.....and well let's just say it wasn't high enough).  Nuff said, ya know what I mean?

I can't believe the snow is here and I'm still here in my foster home, there was snow when I came here:(  I know I've had some health issues, and most likely will have some trouble with my blood readings on and off, but ya know I am the most handsomest and sweetest guy....everyone who meets me says so!  I guess everyone is nervous about my age and the medical involved; I am on Enalapril for protein loss in my urine, Dasaquin and now my prednisone for a while.  I mean come on, give up a movie or something and the meds will be covered.  Well, if you want the whole story, you are just gonna have to get in contact with my foster mom.

I would really love to be in my own furever home, with someone to love me, play a little, give belly rubs, treats, short walks and just hang out together.  I'm really pretty healthy, outside of the food thing I'm really a good boy..........well ok I like to chew on plastic if I get some, but I am so worth having around.  So if you think you are ready for a big redheaded hunka love, contact placementatragom [dot] org and we'll talk...ok:)

Today Max took me to Maple Grove for the Senior Event at PetCo.....for the dogs, not me:) He is such a social and easy going boy it's always fun to take him out. He didn't disappoint as he let toddler, children and adults pet him and love him up. Nary a growl from him when any dog came up. He wasn't too sure about a little pug puppy that was so excited to greet Max. He is ever the gentle soul.

The thing I always hear from visitors to the house and the people at the event who have seen his pics on site......'he's so handsome, his pictures don't do him justice', and I so agree. It is so hard to capture this gentle senior's essence in a picture. He did show his favorite 'thing' to people.....pushing his head between knees and waiting to be pettted and scritched. I always warn people....but sometimes he's a bit faster than I am.

I was so busy chatting I didn't get a lot of pictures of him, but the ones I did show his sweetness with the other dogs. I especially love the one with Miss Cowgirl, the gentle giant and the deaf little sweetheart that is Cowgirl. Caesar held his own with everyone and was just too funny to not get a pic of him and Max. I am including a couple of the other seniors that came and am sorry I didn't get everyone. But time flies when you are talking about your foster, catching up with other fosters and just enjoying meeting people.

Max's numbers with his blood are still not up to par and we are looking to have a new set of eyes check him. Our wonderful Dr. Jennifer has been taking such good care of Maxie and he is one of her favorites RAGOM dogs and has been kind enough to do some xrays and blood work at no charge for us. But she really feels he needs to get another opinion on why we can't get the blood count and cells up. So we will keep you posted.

AND this time I am remembering to say thank you to Max's sponsors, Carl and Mary S. We are so blessed by the BEST SPONSORS in rescue. You are so awesome and I hope you know Max would be the first to say thanks.....by shoving his big beautiful red head between your knees and allowing you to love him up:) Personally I would give a hug, but hey we all have our own way.

And thanks to all of you who came out to meet our wonderful Autumn Seniors........and hopefully after meeting them and talking with their foster families you will consider adopting one of these beautiful souls.

Miss Cowgirl and Maxie Man

Wednesday, October 8, 2008

Sorry for the time lapse on updates.  Maxie Man is the same sweet old boy who likes to act like a 80# puppy some days.  We have given up putting the cereal in the cabinet in the kitchen island.  When we forget to gate him in the hallway, he gets into the cereal.  So, duh, we finally saw the light and store cereal up high now.  Only non food goes in the island cupboard.

Max is perking up again, his one blood count for anemia is up, but the red blood cell count remains low.  We will be doing a new blood work next week.  He is done with his doxy and still taking prednisone 2 times a day.  He does such a great job of not having any accidents.  I limit the water available when we are gone, and then allow him to tank up at night.  Even then he makes the 8 hour sleep time.

We have a new boy here, an English Setter named Doc Holliday and with the nice weather we all are out chasing balls....I only chase when no one will bring one back:)  Even Maxie loves to chase and retrieve.  He would, of course, prefer to chew the balls  up, and swallow.  So I have to keep a close eye on him while the rest are running and retrieving.

The cat chasing has subsided a lot due to a couple of things.  Holliday is adapting to the cats, especially Coulter, and Bailey hides most of the time, so with no real action going on, Max has decided to give up the chase per se.  He is enjoying his peanut butter bone in the a.m. when I leave for work, and that keeps him busy while we're gone.

There really isn't anything special to report this go round.  Waiting for the next blood test, moving food out of his way, enjoying our time outside walking in the field and/or playing ball.  He loves the outdoors, but still will get funny sometimes and will not go out.  In the evening we go outside via the garage as he is not comfortable going down the deck steps at night even with a light on.  It's ok, at his age he can have his little quirks.

I have decided that with the price of gas and all, this must be the main reason no one has ventured north to meet Max.  Therefore, Max and I will be attending the Maple Grove PetCo event on Oct. 18th.  So for anyone who has been keeping up with Mr Max and would like to meet, now is your chance.

Doc and Max, heading home

I am way way overdue for an update on Maxie Man and I apologize. Our daughter graduated from chiro school and we had a lot of planning, cleaning, company, big party.....I'm sure you get the picture. She brought along her dog, Gracie, a pitt bull/lab mix. Gracie fell in love with Max. Oh my gosh, she just wanted to be by him all the time, licking his ears, nibbling, wanting him to play. It was during this visit that I noticed Max was tiring out more than usual and one day when Gracie was trying for his attention he got snappy with her. He had not been himself for awhile and seemed to be tired and having trouble breathing. So off to the vet for x-rays, then an ultra sound and blood work. When all was said and done it showed no masses, thank heavens, but low red blood cell count and low blood platelettes again.

Max was diagnosed with anaplasmosis months back, plus he was losing protein through his urine. He was put on doxycyline for the infection caused by the anaplasmosis and on enalapril for the protein loss. He bounced back and we figured we had it under control.  He had been on prednisone to help his immune system. The latest blood work showed a need to go back on the doxy and prednisone. There is no way to tell if this is still the anaplasmosis rearing its ugly head again, some new infection or his immune system not working. The plan of action is to run the course of the antibiotics and the prednisone for protection and check his blood numbers in a couple weeks. I think this is something that will have to be monitored for the rest of Max's life. Our hope is that this set of doxy will knock this out for good. Meanwhile, Maxie is doing a bit better.

While my daughter, her dog and boyfriend were home, the boyfriend fell in love with Maxie and wanted to steal him away. But one dog is enough especially since we got the daughter's cat that hates dogs. Since Bailey's (the cat) arrival the dogs, Max and resident Jake, have gone in to watch, stalk and chase the cat!! Coulter the dog savvy one is feeling the brunt a bit, but continues to come out and face them down. But even Maxie is wont to chase the cats now.

Maxie may be a senior but boy can he pull some puppy antics. He figured out the cereal was kept in the cabinet in the kitchen island, and figured out how to open the door, take out the tupper ware containers of cereal as well as the boxes. He gave the tupper ware containers his best shot at chewing the covers off.  We have the xrays to prove it, pieces in his intestines and larger pieces in his stomach. This too shall pass.  So ok, we decided to put the heavy kitchen island chairs in front of the cabinet, and since the heavy carpet shampooer was out, plant that in front of it too. Aah did I mention he has a strong head and will? Yep, got home and he had moved everything out of his way and took out all the napkins along with the NEW cereal boxes. So ok, that means being baby gated in the hall while we are at work, and keeping the laundry room door closed.

Take two. Daughter, dog, boyfriend home. Can Max be free in the house? Yes, as long as you are in the house with him. OK. First night they are here I go to get the new container of treats that are kept under the sink in the laundry room, that is kept closed. Mmmmmm container is new with only a couple treats out the night before. Oh look......there's like 6 biscuits left. So being the detective I am, I amble out to the deck and ask daughter.....was the container on the floor anywhere? Know that look 'kids' get (even at 27)? Yep, guess the part about not leaving Max in the house alone includes taking the other dogs outside and leaving him in the house......ALONE!!!! What a sharp big boy I have here.

Since our bed is rather high, Max can't jump up, and typically is very happy on the floor or on his doggie bed. He has since decided that when he does want up he will come to either side of the bed and whines, puts his front paws on the bed and talks to me until I pull him up. Understand you can not get off the bed and lift him up. Nope he wants to be pulled up, and pulling 83 lbs of dog is not easy. Once up he curls up and may or may not spend the night, but at least he got his way.

The other thing Maxie does, is he will come up to you and when sitting or laying on something, will put his head on your lap and look at you. I ask him if he wants to 'talk' to me and he will do this whine, low noise thingy. Hard to explain, but he is a talented boy who lets you know what he wants and needs. If a kitchen cabinet, fridge door or a food wrapper, this guy can be sound asleep in another part of the house and he is next to you in nothing flat. He is just the biggest love bug, easy going, loves everyone, all the dogs he meets, and lumbers along like a big ole bear. In the morning if he has to get up before me....he comes to my side of the bed and puts his head on the bed by my face and whines gently to let me know he needs to go out.

I love seniors with their character, easy going manner, enjoying life each day and taking your love and soaking it up like a sponge. I cannot look at this sweet soul and those big eyes and not smile......even when I'm picking up chewed cereal boxes:)

Max doesn't require a lot of exercise, a couple short walks a day, wander a bit around the yard, a bone to chew on, maybe an occasional toy to destuff.....and  food and love. The rewards from having this teddy bear are priceless.

If you would like to meet Maxie man, just contact placementatragom [dot] org

P.S. Thank you to Carl and Mary, Max's fosters...........we don't forget you, foster mom just doesn't always remember to say thank you on line.

Hi Everyone, Max the Man here.  Yep, FM is falling down on her update job so figured I'd best get one done.  The best news is I am off my pain meds!!  Wooo hooo!!  My new food is awesome and since it has everything I need, I'm down to a couple Dasaquin in the a.m. and my Enalapril in the p.m.  FM says I'm frisky like a 8 year old.

My foster bros, Jake 08-243 and SamSam 07-690 moved out and into a new pad.  FM has been having some healthy issues, oops I mean health issues and I guess 3 and 4 fosters were too much.  First Dora the Boxer left and then the boys.  Now it's just me and resident Jake (ragom # 07-349) so it's like the senior residence here.  WE have a new cat.....Bailey.  He used to live with my human sister in TX, but he had to come live with us.  He doesn't like dogs...can you imagine that?  Well, I keep chasing him and trying to make friends, but so far no go.  I think if he would just come out and hang out with us like Coulter the Cat does, all would be cool.  It's all him cuz Jake chases him too.  Needless to say FM and FD aren't happy with us, so we are trying to be good and give him a little room.

Jake and I have beengoing for walks out in the field.  We get to walk, sniff, amble, sniff, run, sniff.....well you get the picture.  Today FD took us out and took some pictures of me.  Aren't I handsome and regal (aah see picture)?  The folks say it's easier taking us old guys out for a walk then when we had the young 'uns.  We listen, come when called and just enjoy the outing.

I must say I enjoy the A/C.......don't know where it was the first 9 + years of my life, but I can tell ya I don't want to ever have to be without it.  I also got moved up to a new feeding station.  I eat right next to resident Jake in the kitchen now.  It took me a couple days to realize I didn't have to run to the dining side of the kitchen.  This is way closer and I'm by my buddy Jake.

I know everyone is busy during the summer, so I am hoping that as everyone's schedule starts to slow down someone will realize that the great senior who loves walks, scritches and just hanging out is ME and I'm the one for them.  I'm easy going, totally house trained and love cats and other dogs.  So if you are ready to share my golden years with you, just contact  placementatragom [dot] org and we can set up a sniff and greet....I mean a meet 'n greet:)

Love Maxie

I love this picture of Max cuz it sums him up...just a happy go lucky kinda guy, more than content to hang out and chew on a bone or destuff a toy.

Max is doing wonderfully. Since his visit to the vet and the removal of a number of teeth, the rest cleaned and a growth by his eye removed, he has been like a new boy. He is so sweet and he will walk up to you, stick his head between your knees and just stand there as you rub him on his head. He is back on dry kibble and met his kibble when softened with water, with much distain. Max loves his food, or anyone else's for that matter :) He sits and watches me dish everyone's food out, watches me put the food down for the 2 Jakes (resident Jake and Big Jake 08-243), and when I say OK Max come on.....he follows me to his bowl and eats. He is just so easy.

He is on prescription JD food, and V-caps until the food kicks in. He will be on the Enalapril most likely for life. While he is on Tramadol for pain for his arthritic hips, we are hoping the new food will allow us to eliminate the pain meds down the line, and only use it as needed. The vet felt he must have been in some serious pain with the teeth that he had broken, chipped and the infected one. Now he's just a happy boy all the time. At age 10 he still has a lilt to his step, loves everyone, (including the new cat, Bailey) likes to play with foster brothers Jake 08-243 and Sam 07-690......they like to lay on the floor and mouth one another. He just isn't demanding in any way, but does let you know he feels when you are leaving he should be going with. Sunday he enjoyed some time laying in the wading pool during our 98 degree day. Needless to say the dogs weren't out for more a few minutes at a time.

Max is a simple gentleman with simple needs; a family to love him and share his senior golden years. No fence needed, just a leash for walks, a good chew bone, a toy to destuff occassionly, a doggie bed, good food, his meds and security for the rest of his life. Is that what you have to offer? If so contact placementatragom [dot] org

My apologies for the delay in updates.... and a huge thanks to Max's fosters Carl and Mary!

Foster Mom and the Crew

Monday, June 16, 2008

FIRST off I would like to thank Max's sponsors, Carl and Mary. I have been remiss in thanking them for helping with Max's vet bills. He had his 'lump' removed from behind his right leg, the coat is coming back in and it's not quite so noticeable. However, I found a chipped tooth and it is one of the big ones in the back.  Wednesday he will be heading in to have that cared for. So thank goodness for Carl and Mary and their help.

I'd like to take a moment to sumarize Maxie Man. He was with the same family all his life; lived outdoors; is now a total indoor dog; he is so undemanding, and his favorite things are to greet you by putting his head between your knees (or thereabouts:) and is always on the lookout for food. That is his achilles heel.....and if there is anything he is able to get into, he will. Examples: I keep food in cleaned litter buckets in the kitchen so I don't have to be trouncing around each feeding time. I typically put the buckets up on counters or the other side of the gate. I have forgotten twice and both times Max the Man has chewed the covers and got them off. This of course meant anyone who had free range in the kitchen/hall area also had free buffet thanks to Max. Max discovered there were 2 bags of dog food in the laundry room closet, opened the door, ripped open the bag and again...buffet. He may be a bit hard of hearing, but if it involves the fridge, pots/pans, cupboards opening or even walking up to a counter...he's there:)

Max is sweet beyond words, is trust worthy in the house as long as food is put up. He loves to play a little, nap in the lower level, give Coulter the Cat a little cardio exercise, but would not hurt him. He still hesitates to go outside, especially for last call.  It's as if he's sure I'm gonna make him stay out there. No way. This is a house boy. He gets along with everyone and all the dogs. Being back on the tramadol has put that spring back in his step.

Max does not do the GR paw thing, you know pawing at you for attention. He will come over, sit down and look at you. Then if you talk low and quiet to him, many times he will 'talk back'......it starts like a low rrrooooo and then gets a little more verbal. He's not a big barker, he listens, he doesn't have accidents in the house and is just content to 'Be'............with you, alone, with other dogs, whatever the situation offers. He's not a runner per se, loves to go for walks and is pretty good off leash (don't tell anyone I said that) and will follow resident Jake around when out and about.

People worry about adopting older dogs, the seniors, but you shouldn't. They have manners, are easy going, love you just cuz you are there, are undemanding, appreciate everything you do for them and with them and love you more than anyone else. They may be with you for a year or 5. You never know, but I do know they are special and the amount of time with them is very special and you give them the greatest gift of all; total love and happiness during their years left here. When our family fur members go to the Rainbow Bridge they do so knowing they were loved, cared for and appreciated, and in the end it's about what we can do to make their lives complete just as they complete ours. It is better to have loved an old dog for a short time, than to have had a young dog that you resent because of all the work. Just look at each of these senior faces and know they could be the best companion you ever had.

Please consider Maxie as a possible family member, I don't think you will ever be disappointed in how loving and sweet he is. He's like a comfortable pair of slippers, he just feels right.

Maxie Man will be ready to go to his forever home after next Wednesday's surgery. But he is always open to meeting a possible forever family.  Please contact placementatragom [dot] org for a meeting.

Lookin' good!

Max the Man!

I think this sums up Max's week end so far :)... He has been a busy boy in and out, running in the field, playing tug, chewing on marrow bones, welcoming the new kid Jake (BJ) 08-243, and keeping fit by getting those naps in.

Max is doing great, his new meds are helping him and he's acting younger and more alert. His appetite is healthy as mine and we both need to watch our weight, ha ha.

Max is one of the most laid back, easy going, take life in stride, but if you push me I'll stand my ground kinda dogs. He is loving, but not demanding. Always ready to go for a ride, go to work, outside, go for a walk, a 'run' around the field and then a good nap. He hasn't ever snapped, growled, flinched or protested about anything. He may not be fond of his nails being cut, but he will let you do anything.

Life is good, playmates are good to have, but some one on one with his humans is better. He is a companion to both dog and his humans. His coat is coming in and by fall it should be as beautiful as that big red head of his :) Sometimes words can't explain a dog's personality except to say he's as good as it gets.

You really need to meet him to appreciate who he is. So contact placementatragom [dot] org to meet this handsome senior.

I apologize for the delay in getting an update in for Max, but I have been waiting for all his medical tests to come back so I can give everyone an accurate and honest update.

Keep in mind Max has lived the majority of his life outdoors and at age 10 things have caught up with him. A few weeks ago he had a lypoma removed and has recovered very nicely.  We had x-rays done of his back legs and it does show severe arthritis.  He is now on Dasaquin to help with his joints. At present we have put him back on a low dosage of Tramadol, a pain med, to help manage any pain and see what kind of improvement we see in him.

Max had a UTI (urinary tract infection) and was losing protein in his urine, which is not what we want. He was put on Baytril for the UTI, Sucalfote for a couple weeks to protect his tummy lining against any ulcers, tummy upset etc., and on Prednisone to help boost the Baytril. We are in the process of weaning him off his prednisone and he will be totally off it in 2 weeks. When his protein loss count came back high again he was put on Enalapril which helps protect his kidneys and allow them to work more efficently. He will remain on the Enalapril the rest of his life. For now we have Maxie on V-Caps and will remain on them until he can go on perscription JD food which helps with the joints etc. Moderate leash walks will be best for Max to keep limber and in good shape. The UTI is gone so no more antibiotics needed.

Maxie has been with us long enough to have his surgery and get his medical issues addressed and in order. He is ready to find his forever home. He would like a home where people enjoy seniors that are sweet, easy going, loving, and easy to please. He loves to be out side enoying a roll in the grass, a walk around the field, over to the neighbors, wherever. When you go to the kitchen counter he is right there....... might be food involved or better yet.........pills in moist food. I love the way he is just this big goofy boy, not a mean bone in his body and is content to lay down and nap anywhere. His absolute favorite thing in the world (next to food) is raw marrow bones. And he has the teeth to take it on:)  He is so content to take his bone outside, chew away and mind his own business. The other dogs don't bother him.....in fact they all can have their bones in different parts of the yard. Though given the chance, foster sister Dora, the boxer mix, would be happy to steal it away. And of course he is happy to go to work with you or stay home and rest up for your welcome home greeting which usually consists of him sticking his head between your "knees" and getting loved up:)

Max's pictures don't do him justice and I need to get a new head shot of him. The 2 things people always say when meeting Max is: 1. He is bigger than he looks in his pictures (he's about 83 lbs and needs to lose those new 3 lbs:)  and 2 He is so sweet and mellow..... and he is.  Nothing really bothers him, he loves everyone.  This gentle senior would like nothing better than to find his forever home and enjoy his senior years laying on a big old comfy doggie bed, chewing his marrow bones, going for walks or car rides. He is great with my cats, ignores them mostly, but will give them a little cardio exercise when he feels it's time.

Max is bringing me to the RAGOM PETCO event on Saturday the 17th in Maple Grove.  So here's your chance to meet this loving senior boy. Or if you'd like, contact  placementatragom [dot] org if you can't wait that long to meet him.

I have had the very distinct pleasure of hosting Max while his foster family is out of town for a few days.  Max fit himself into my golden herd without any problem.  I can tell you that Max is respectful and pleasant to both of my 4 year old male dogs and also to my senior girl who was not feeling at her best.

Max does not even look at any furniture – and he didn’t pick up any bad habits from either of my four year old couch potatoes.  He slept on the floor next to my bed – while my boys were sprawled all over the bed – on the side of the bed that is opposite from the one chosen by my girl.  Max slept through the night without a sound.  He showed me that he is completely housetrained.  He neither counter-surfed nor practiced dumpster diving while at my house.  Max chewed on absolutely nothing that was inappropriate.  He doesn’t even bark for no reason.

Max appears to my eye to be completely recovered from his surgery – other than his really interesting hair cut!  He prances.  He has the cutest face and the sweetest personality.

Max is welcome back at my house any time he would like to visit for any length of time.  As a matter of fact, if I hadn’t been told so many times that there are no perfect dogs, I would say that Max is perfect!  Actually, I am going to say it anyway.  Max is perfect!  So, if you want to meet the perfect dog, send a note to placementatragom [dot] org  and ask to meet Max, the perfect dog!

Or, you could meet Max at the Animal Health Fair this coming Saturday, May 3, 2008, in St. Cloud at the Companion Animal Hospital located at 2703 Clearwater Road, St. Cloud, MN 56301.  Max will be there from 11:00 AM until 3:00.

I apologize for the lack of updates on Mr Max. I have been out of town on 2 different trips this past month, and luckily temp foster mom Carol did an update on Max.

Max had surgery on Monday the 7th to remove a fatty growth under and around his right elbow area. He stayed with another foster mom, Konnie, until I got back in town and met her on Thursday a.m. She said that morning he had blood in his urine and should probably be seen. I took him home, settled him in and ran into work, spoke with the vet and made an appointment for late afternoon.

You have to understand Max has had a lot going on since coming into RAGOM; ear infection in both ears, he broke out from either the ear cleaning solution or the ear drops so we had to use just saline, and he was on antibiotics for the infection. We also found out his protein was high in his urine count and that he has anaplasmosis from tick disease. While he was on antibiotics for the ear infection we were watching the anaplasmosis and protein count. I feel responsible for not getting everything straight before leaving on this last trip, but we now have Max the Man on meds to cover all bases.

While at the vet on Thursday we did xrays and bloodwork. The xrays showed no growths or blood inside, kidneys looked smooth etc. The bloodwork however showed low red blood cells. There is more to it all, but each time I think I have it all straight I mix something up. Let's just say with the protein count still high in his urine, low blood platlettes, his incision oozing a bit and the leg now swelling, it was decided Max would remain in the hospital. My bright eyed senior now had dull eyes and was getting dehydrated. We decided to see what the night and next a.m. would bring. Sadly things weren't getting any better. The blood count was still low enough that if he were to play or fall etc he could bleed out. His leg was now like a swollen sausage and red, and so it was decided another night, antibiotics and steriods to be administered and remain on the IV for hydration. Serious concerns and then before I left I saw this old boy show his food loving side. While I was laying on the floor with him (yes on the vet's floor) Kay the nurse walked by and she had some crackers in her hand for a snack, after all it was now after 7 pm (we had been there since about 5:15).  I saw Max's nose sniff the air, lift his head and heave himself up and try to go for Kay.....after all she had the crackers. Then Cindy got a couple treats out of the jar in one of the exam rooms and again, nose sniff, head up and up he stands. He cracked us all up and I needed that before I left him. I did leave Cindy with instructions should anything change or he wouldn't settle in to call me anytime all night and I would come stay with him.

This morning Dr Nancy called and said Max was looking and feeling better. She took him out to potty and after doing his business, he layed down and rolled in the snow and would not get up for her.  He loves his snow rolls!! Last night she had decided to go with the steriods to try and get things under control even though it would inhibit the healing process a bit. We are hoping the steroids will be short term. One of the blood counts was up and one had dropped a bit by this morning. But he was looking bright eyed and she felt he could come home.

Typically when riding in the doggie mobile Max lays on the floor between the front seat and the bench seat. Today he actually cooperated and rode home on the seat. Luckily he is such a sweet easy going boy and will potty on leash. He is not thrilled about being kenneled, and was out of his kennel most of the day at the vets office, so while I do updates or watch TV etc he will be out of his crate (which is Mastiff size) and can lay on the floor or couch with his e-collar off as long as he doesn't lick the incision. While I have been typing he has been asleep on the floor next to me with no cone on.

At this time Mr Max has some serious meds to be taken; Enalapril for the protein in his urine, and may have to be on it the rest of his life; Doxycycline for the Anaplasmosis, Prednisone and Baytril and Carafate to coat his stomach. Whew!! He is eating 4 times a day, and since he lost 6 lbs (he's down to 82 lbs from 88lb with 80lbs being ideal) we will watch his weight. Tuesday morning we go in for a recheck and new blood test to see what the numbers day and go from there. Should anything go south this week end we have a great doggie ER. While Max is on the prednisone I will work from home as he will be drinking a lot and having to be let out.

Probably the most difficult thing is keeping the other fur butts at bay, and I have Bruno, my brother's German Shepard, who lucky for me is a well behaved boy. I just have to keep Max Man quiet.....no playing at all, and he and Dora and Sam 07-690 love to play 3 way tug, but it will have to wait. So keep Maxie Man in your thoughts and your paws crossed for a speedy recovery, so that IF Spring does show up, he will be ready to go out and enjoy  it.

I just wanted to send an up-date on Max because I thought it would be helpful for his waiting "forever family" to know how he did in a different home. Good trial!   Max is a very sweet, wonderful dog. He becomes velcro. He loves the human. I think he acts younger than his age (not obnoxious, but spunky). His teeth are good too! Max was left in the house during the work day without being crated. He did not destroy anything inappropriate. No accidents in the house. He greeted me at the door when I came home (couldn't get the door open, cause he was there) & always was happy!  He is THE PERFECT DOG! Well, I digress....he is whiny, vocal, & loves to eat! & I was warned also about getting into the garbage. The garbage is under the sink, so no problem. Although, lazy mom, bags it & puts it on the porch for my next trip to the can. Max attacked it like a scavenger! Beware....   Max wants to say that he has had a great time here playing with Bud & Sam. Foster mom took us to daycare yesterday & I had a blast! Came home very tired & got stuck in the car, on the floor. Sam helped rescue me. I was so tired, I couldn't move.   and...I got a "frosty paw". I thought that you just put the whole thing in your mouth & eat it....I was shown how to lick the luscious thing! (I want more of them).    Foster mom dog-sitter is going to miss this guy. He has touched my heart. He deserves a home that will treat him like a king & love him greatly. He is worth it & he will bring you joy with his play fullness & love. His big head & big feet & big heart are so worth it, believe me.   Until the next one, Max....I love you!

Max has been to the vet and due to the bad weather, the blood work and fecal results have been delayed til tomorrow. But nothing has slowed Max the Man down. He has been playing all week end with Sam 07-690, Dora and Lake the lab from next door. Resident Jake (former RAGOM boy) is not a 'player'.  Max is very social with the dogs, but has let Lake know that he needs to respect his elders and when he doesn't, he is put in his place.  Meanwhile they will play tug and spent a good hour today, just the 2 of them in the yard playing. But being an all around good guy, Max plays with Dora, the foster pitty mix, and I think he's sweet on her.....you can just tell if you know what I mean.  He also plays well with Sam and SamSam is much smaller. I love to watch Max holding the rope in his mouth and the kidz take turns trying to tug it out. Max just stands there, like ok anytime now!!

This gentleman is the sweetest guy, and has made himself at home. Last night I helped him up on the bed as I could no longer listen to him 'cry' when he saw the other troops up there. He got up, laid down and never moved the rest of the night. I think he has adjusted to 'indoor' living quite well, don't you?  He knows where his bowl is for feeding and I am using a raised bowl as it's easier for him to eat and disgest. He is eating 2 cups in the a.m. and 2 in the p.m., plus today they had raw marrow bones. Dora is more protective of her bone, so she was on the deck, but Max and Lake both hung out in the fenced yard and stayed in their respective area and chewed away, happy boys.

Today's weather was perfect as the troops (all 5 of them) were able to spend the majority of the day outside playing. They came in a couple times for naps and snacks, but then back out. I shoveled the deck of what little snow was left and soon with the warm sun it was all dried out and they enjoyed some down time just laying on the deck and enjoying the sun.

Max is a gentle giant who will do well pretty much anywhere, with or without a fenced yard. He isn't a  young whipper snapper needing a lot of exercise and running all over. He does enjoy the company of other dogs, but loves his humans too. I feel he could go to a home with or without another dog. He has always been an only dog, but also always outside, and I think he rather enjoys being around people. He would do well in a dog park environment or having a neighbor playmate to play tug with. He has not had any accidents, he is good in the house, has decided the cats are ok but not willing to play with him:) Max would be happy to just hang out with his humans, go for walks, play a little ball and tug and enjoy his golden years indoors, out of the cold and the summer heat.  So if you have been looking for that easy going senior boy, I think you would find Max to be a wonderful companion.

Max should be ready for his forever home in about a week, depending on when we can get the fatty masses removed from under and behind his front legs. Then he can slowly build up his strength and start on those spring walks to help him lose those extra 8 lbs he doesn't need. We will be going for a walk this week and see how he does on a flat collar.

If you would like to meet Max, please contact placementatragom [dot] org and let's talk about this wonderful gentleman and when you would like to meet him.
