Max 09-137

Profile

Hello Everyone! My name is Max and I just arrived into the care of a Ragom foster home in Ankeny, Iowa today. Would you like to know more about me?  I am a Golden Mix, 2 years of age, unneutered male (not yet up to date on vaccinations) and I am a very sweet boy. I have a ton of energy and would make a fabulous jogging partner. I am good with cats, dogs, and kids. I love lots of activity and enjoy giving wet sloppy kisses to people and dogs. I am not scared of anything that i can think of.

My family surrendered me because they have 7 children and they are very, very busy with caring for the family and full time jobs. They wanted to find a forever family that would be a perfect fit for Mr Max ... that's me!

I have a vet appt on Thursday ... oh boy ! that's tomorrow. Well, i better close for now and get some rest. More updates to come!

Updates

Sunday, April 26, 2009

Hi Everyone! My foster mom is sleeping now so i'm going to send in the update for her this week. Well, what can I say? All good things of course!

Last night there was a storm in Ankeny with thunder, lightning, and rain.  Didn't bother me though. My foster sister Megan paced with fear. I even went outside in the rain to potty.  As I mentioned to you in the beginning, I'm not afraid of much.  I'm a confident guy.

I have never been off leash in my foster home.  But before I came into RAGOM, I would respect the yard parameters of my former home and not run off.  I am not a flight risk, and want to stay with my family!

As I continue to learn my routine here in foster care, I am settling down more and more.  I'm relaxed and happy. I know that someday soon I will be uprooted once again for the final time.  I'm looking so forward to finding my adoptive family. I will bring them so much laughter and love and good times.  My foster parents have shared so much with me in this short month, and we have enjoyed many good times together.

i'm totally reliable with potty training, but not chewing on things in the house ... guess i'm still pretty young

Foster mom feels I might be ready for the privilege of sleeping outside of the crate in a bedroom overnigh.  Woo hoo!

I walk about mile and half daily, but I would be up for more if you are too!

I have enclosed some pictures for you that were just taken... shows me in the yard having fun with Jack & Megan my foster siblings.

Have a good weekend!

Love, Max

As you can see in all of Max's pictures, he is a very happy dog and we enjoy his presence in our home because he is always ready for the next game of ball, walk, dinner bowl, or help me do a load of laundry. He is a velcro dog and enjoys following me around the home from room to room. One of the biggest changes we have seen in Max is that he now will lay on the floor and nap in our presence. We can actually watch a tv show in the evening in peace. During the first week or so , we thought we may be fostering a dog that would never stop moving except when crated. Looking back, we realize that Max was just so excited and nervous about all the changes in his life that it was hard for him to slow down. In addition to having high energy, we have also discovered that Max is one of the most intelligent foster dogs we have ever worked with.

Max made me smile the other day while walking when he spotted a young boy on the sidewalk. As we got closer to the young boy, Max became more and more excited.  And then finally when Max was close enough he jumped up and gave this young boy a kiss.  Max loves to show affection.  He has given my dogs, husband, and myself at least one hundred kisses each since he arrived.  He is just so grateful and sweet.  However, Max does not yet understand that sometimes humans ( and dogs ) do not want a kiss.

When Max spots dogs while walking in the neighborhood, he whines and whines and wants to cross the road and meet that new dog.

Max's routine while in foster care starts each day around 5 am. He gets up and eats his breakfast. Then he sits on the floor and plays with squeaky toys or a Nylabone while I drink a cup of coffee, and then another cup, and then another cup. Then he goes out in the yard to potty. Then around 6 am - 6:30 am he follows me into the bathroom, and lays on the floor while I shower. He does not try to get into the tub. Good boy, Max! At around 7:30 am, Max must enter his crate while his foster parents go to work. It is a long day for Max in the crate, but he does wonderfully! We get home from work around 4:30 pm. Max then eats again around 5 pm and goes for a long walk every night. Then he plays with Megan and Jack and often goes for car rides. We are trying to expose Max to more and more and he appears to have very few things that scare him.

Tomorrow Max is doing a Home visit for RAGOM. Wow! Max is already volunteering his time!

I have noticed the last few days that Max does seem anxious and excited in the car . When I go into stores, I have noticed he barks.  I'm trying to determine what he is trying to tell me. Does he want to go in with me? Is he scared to be left in the car by himself?

At home, when we ask Max to stop his barking, he does so on command.  He has mastered the sit command and kennel command.  And he would master any other commands with ease if we were working with him, but we have been lazy ... sorry Max.

More updates to come!

Happy Easter from Max!

Max has had a very busy few days!

We picked up Max this past Saturday morning from the vet clinic and he is now a 2 year old neutered male! Surgery went well and the girls at the clinic told us what a “good boy” he was. Max impressed everyone by sitting nicely on the scale and giving a reading of 58 lbs before surgery. He was sent home with an Elizabethan collar but that did not stay on long as Max ran through the bushes in the back yard.

Max has been going on several car rides recently and he really enjoys this. He does not get car sick or scared. He loves looking out the window in my van! Tonight we drove to PetSmart and watched Max walk into a public store for the first time. He entered with great confidence and was overwhelmed by all the smells and sights. He saw a few cats and one dog. He did not react much to strangers other than to want to approach and sniff them. I think he would have loved to stay for several hours at PetSmart but we had to keep moving and go home and eat supper and watch “Dancing with the Stars”. Max has been doing wonderful with housebreaking… his only accident in the house or crate was the first night right after coming inside. Certainly understandable. He never messes in his crate. He has not been destructive, but has chewed on a few dog toys and one of my ball caps. For some reason, Max grabbed my cap when we were not looking and chewed on the bill. Other than that he really does not get into anything.  Max is very photogenic and a beautiful mixed breed dog. He is very treat motivated and will train with ease as long as you have a few doggy biscuits in your pocket.

Max is feeling sad tonight because nobody has called him yet for adoption, but I assured him the right family is out there!

PICK ME! PICK ME!Hello. It's Max again ... I wanted to write an update today as i am having surgery in a few days and will be recuperating. I'm scared for my surgery, but foster mom said that i need to be neutered.

My foster parents have been impressed with a few things they have learned about me this week.

  1. I am walking really good on the leash except for taking lots of stops to sniff. But I don't pull and with a little bit of practice I will be great!
  2. I am very, very smart ( I knew that already ). It's easy for me to signal to go outside. I got the hang of that. I was even signaling last night that I would like to go out front door and take a walk.
  3. Even though I am 2, I have the personality more of a young puppy. I'm very playful and very sweet and very active. I need direction (that's a big word!) in my life. I sometime mouth people's hands, and jump towards them in a playful manner like a young puppy would do.  But I would never hurt anybody.
  4. If you want to adopt me, I will need a crate/doggy bed. I will be bringing my own blanket! I am much too young to have free roam of house.
  5. I might need one of those " Slow the Chow Down " bowls because i sure like to eat really fast!

Let me know if you are interested in meeting me. I'm in Iowa and if you live in MN i'm not too far from you. If you live in Iowa... well that's even better!

Potty Time!!

Showing off his pearly white teeth!

MAX IS STRIKINGLY HANDSOME. HE HAS VERY PRETTY EYES AND A LANKY BODY. HIS FUR IS VERY THICK AND COARSE --- MAY SOFTEN UP WITH GOOD DIET AND A GOOD BATH.  HIS TEETH ARE SPARKLY WHITE. MOSTLY GOLDEN IN COLOR WITH A WHITE CHEST.  HE IS QUIET MOST OF THE TIME BUT ENJOYS GETTING A SHRILL BARK IN EVERY NOW AND THEN.

HE WILL BE NEUTERED NEXT WEEK. THE VET THOUGHT HE MAY HAVE SOME COLLIE IN HIM BUT THAT’S JUST A GUESS. HE ONLY WEIGHED 55 LBS.  HE GOT HIS SHOTS AND THE VET AND TESTED NEGATIVE FOR HEARTWORM AND POSITIVE FOR WHIPWORM WHICH WE ARE NOW TREATING.  HE WAS A CHAMP GETTING HIS MICROCHIP … OUCH!

HIS TEMPERAMENT IS VERY SUBMISSIVE AND SWEET. HE LOVES GIVING KISSES … KISSES TO ME … KISSES TO MY HUSBAND …. KISSES FOR JACK & MEGAN TOO. BUT HE IS NOT A CUDDLER. HE’S MUCH TOO ACTIVE TO CUDDLE. HE IS FULL OF ENERGY SO I AM LOOKING CLOSELY AT POTENTIAL FAMILIES FOR HIM THAT WILL REALLY FOCUS ON DAILY EXERCISE. AS I MENTIONED BEFORE, HE WOULD LOVE TO BE ACTIVE WITH YOU JOGGING, WALKING, SWIMMING, HIKING, ETC.

HE RIDES FAIRLY GOOD IN CAR. HE IS CRATE TRAINED, AND SLEEPS GOOD AT NIGHT.  ACCORDING TO HIS FORMER FAMILY, HE IS GOOD WITH CATS AND KIDS. FOSTER HOME DOES NOT HAVE EITHER. HE IS A SMART DOG. THE FIRST NIGHT AT OUR HOME HE LEARNED HOW TO USE HIS NOSE TO POP THE LID OFF BOTH THE DOGGY TREAT JAR AND DOGGY FOOOD CRATE.   THE FORMER FAMILY SAID HE HAS NEVER TRIED TO JUMP THE FENCE BUT WILL DIG.  HE WAS ADOPTED BY HIS FORMER FAMILY AT 12 WEEKS OF AGE AND SPENT THE FIRST 9 MONTHS OF HIS LIFE INSIDE. THEN AFTER THEIR BABY WAS BORN, HE BECAME AN OUTSIDE DOGGY.

MAX IS DOING FINE WITH HOUSEBREAKING BUT WE DO CRATE HIM WHILE WE ARE AT WORK DURING THE DAY.  MAX KNOWS THE SIT COMMAND BUT IT IS HARD FOR HIM TO SIT STILL … HIS POOR LITTLE BODY JUST TREMBLES BECAUSE HE DOES NOT WANT TO MISS OUT ON WHAT MIGHT BE HAPPENING IN THE NEXT ROOM OVER.  HE NEEDS SOME WORK AND ATTENTION IN THE AREA OF TRAINING.  BUT I AM CONFIDENT HE WILL BLOSSOM INTO A WONDERFUL DOG.  HE MET 2 PUGS DOGS  THIS MORNING AT THE FENCE LINE AND DID NOT EVEN SO MUCH AS BARK AT THEM. GOOD BOY MAX. HE’S VERY CURIOUS OF EVERYTHING.

LEASH TRAINING WILL NEED SOME WORK. MAX MUCH PREFERS TO JUST FLY AROUND THE FENCED YARD …. HA. HA. WHEN I STICK OUT MY HEAD TO THE BACK YARD AND SAY MAX COME , HE ROCKETS OVER TO ME…. HE IS FAST AS LIGHTNING.

DUE TO MAX’S HIGH ENERGY LEVEL , I WILL ONLY CONSIDER HIM FOR A FAMILY WITH OLDER CHILDREN.

MORE UPDATES TO COME!
