Max 09-179

Profile

Meet the new kid on the RAGOM block--Max. He is about 12 months old and has a very sweet disposition. Max was found as a stray and must have been wandering a while as he is pretty thin. I am feeding him 3 times a day to put some meat on his bones. He is also blowing his coat so looks a bit like a molting grizzly bear! He doesn't mind being groomed. Max is small and won't get much bigger except for bulking up.

Max was neutered and dewormed this past week. He will need further deworming in the next few weeks but that is no problem. Otherwise he is a healthy, active boy. Max is not 100% house trained and I'll bet he was an outside dog. But he is catching on quickly and we haven't had any accidents today. He is a playful boy and gets along great with my resident dogs--that is saying something considering my 8 yo female is pretty particular :) She allowed him to sleep on the bed and we have peaceful nights.

He is active outside but calm in the house. Max has tried counter surfing but is very responsive to a calm correction. Loud noises have startled him and he is a bit shy but I think he will improve once he feels more comfortable here. He has a hard time going in the door but will follow my residents most of the time. Other times, I need to prop the door and move away before he will come in. I am hoping he gets more comfortable with this as well. Getting in and out of the car is also difficult but once in, he rides just fine. He very much wants to be with his people.

I don't think Max needs a fence since he followed me out of the open gate twice (sneaky boy) and came right away when I called him to me. He's not a dasher. He might need to role model off another dog due to his doorway difficulties and shyness but I will have a better idea of that over the next few days. Max has been around cats and doesn't try to kill them--just chases playfully. I'm not sure how he would be with kids but I think once he got comfortable with their normal kid behavior, he would be fine. He is crate-trained but needed a butt boost the first time. Since then I have been feeding him in the crate hoping that will get him used to it. He is still young and chewed through a leash in the car ride so probably not trustworthy with free roam yet.

Max is just a great, adorable young boy who will make some lucky family a wonderful, loyal companion!

The little grizzly bear cub has found a wonderful family to call his own! I am so happy for Maxie Bear and Dan and Linda! Max will enjoy his new mom and dad all day long since they are retired. He will get to go everywhere they go. Best of all, he will have a huge fenced back yard to run in. Stay out of the fish pond, Max and have a GReat life!

Maxie here! Guess what? I learned to play in the water yesterday. Foster Mom threw me in the kiddie pool and that was all it took! Now I like to dive in and tear around the yard and I like to stick my head under water and dive for the leaves at the bottom of the pool and I like to paw at my tennis ball and I like to stick my head under the running hose! See how much fun water is???

Foster Mom says she thought long and hard about letting me stay here with her forever because she just loves me so much. But she told me if she did that, she couldn't help the next dog that really needs a foster home before they find their own forever family. So there is a family that really likes me and wants to come and meet me. All the way from Iowa. I know how far that is because I came all the way from South Dakota to my foster mom's house.

This family has little girls and I love kids! So keep your paws crossed that they will want to keep me!

Love Maxie Bear.

Fun with WATER!

Max is kid tested and did OK! In fact, he walked right into the open van doors to greet the three kids inside. Shocked me! He was not incredibly interactive as he was on new territory and had to explore it all. But I think he will warm up to them once he settles in to his new home. He is very gentle and not a jumpy, crazy puppy. He would benefit from the confidence building that obedience training brings :)

Max has made great strides in the 5 days he has been here. He is OK going through the door and OK jumping into the car to go for a ride. Max is learning to walk with the Gentle Leader--he pulls on a flat collar.

Now for the things he needs to work on....he countersurfs. Unfortunately, he was rewarded early on when he snatched a piece of buttered bread. So it will be much harder to extinguish the behavior now. He is very food motivated and skinny so he is looking for food when he smells me eating or cooking. Sneaky enough to wait till I am out of the kitchen too! Sorry about that potential families! We won't hold that against him will we?

Max is also not 100% getting the idea that he can't pee in the house.  He is better but not 100% yet so I would plan on working on that with him if you are interested. Hey--dogs do eventually get that whole idea so that is a quick fix. He's young!  We did find out that he is actually 7 months old, not 12 months old.
