Let me introduce Max to our wonderful RAGOM followers. Max is a 5 year old purebred Golden Retriever. He is a beautiful, young boy who would love to have a forever family of his own. He came to RAGOM from a family that did not have time to spend with him. According to the information we received, he was an outside dog, but he has learned very quickly what it is like to live inside a house.

Max was neutered last week and is now up to date on all of his vaccinations and is heartworm negative. He is underweight at 58 pounds for his height and needs to gain around 10 pounds or so. We are working on that but we have not had him long enough to show much progress on that yet.

Max is a very smart boy and wants to please. He listens well and just needs someone to do a refresher on basic obedience. Max knows his name and has a great recall out in our fenced in yard. He does try to sit when he wants to be petted even though at times his excitement gets the best of him and he wiggles all over. He walks great on a leash with a Gentle Leader and loves his walks. He has counter surfed a couple of times but does listen when he is being corrected. I have not caught him counter surfing for a while now.

Max has a fair amount of energy for a 5 year old dog. In fact, he acts more like a 1 year old dog and to look at him one would think the same thing. I didn't believe he was 5 until I saw his birthdate of January 2007 on his paperwork. Max is not hyper by any means, but is a dog that would need daily consistent exercise. He loves, loves, loves tennis balls and enjoys fetching them. Max runs like the wind and is quite the self-entertainer racing around the yard with a ball in his mouth. He sometimes throws the ball in the air and catches it when it bounces. It is quite comical to watch him play by himself. Max would be a great dog for someone that jogs or runs as he has the long legs to keep up with whatever speed you are going.

I can't say enough good things about Max. He has the great golden disposition of being a friendly, happy-go-lucky guy. He is how a Golden Retriever should be. Here are a few things a forever home needs for Max:

  1. A fenced in yard for Max to run in. He would not do well on a tie out every day as he needs to be able to run and play to rid himself of some energy.
  2. A home where he would get consistent, daily exercise. (Of course, we all need that.)
  3. Max does love to play with other dogs. He would do fine as the only dog, but he really enjoys our dogs and playing with them. Someone who enjoys going to a dog park or has dogs that like to play would be great for him.
  4. Max does fine with cats. We have two and he was interested in them when he first got here, more out of curiosity than anything. He doesn't pay much attention to them now.
  5. Max loves his people. After living outside for probably most of his life, he has been so happy being around people. He loves to follow us everywhere and he is usually not far from us when we are home. A home that loves to spend time with their dogs would be great for Max.
  6. Working on basic obedience would be beneficial for Max. He has been taught a few things, but a refresher would be good. He does respond to a voice correction and shows he really wants to please you. He is a very quick learner and like all dogs, would make better pets with training.

Updates

Wednesday, June 11, 2014

It’s been two years now since Max 12-180 joined our family. (Or as we like to say, made US a family.)

Since his last ‘happy endings’ update, Max has had lots of new adventures – hiking in the north woods, exploring our local lakes, rivers and parks, watching the last Hollidazzle Parade and charming all kinds of people (including a couple of RAGOM home visits).

Max spends his weekdays either at doggie daycare or at “Grammies and Grampies” because he’s just not that fond of being alone. He gets bored quickly. And when that happens, he gets naughty quickly, too!

On nights and weekends, it’s family time. And Max just goes with the flow. Whatever we’re up to, he’s happy as long as he’s with us – especially if going somewhere in the car is involved. “Wanna’ go for a ride?” is his favorite thing to hear.

While he can sometimes be nervous in new situations (automatic doors and linoleum floors are not his thing), we’ve discovered that if hiking is involved, he’s relaxed and confident wherever we go. In fact, he loves it!

When we spent a week on the Gunflint Trail, he traversed the hiking paths (even the really hard ones) as if he’d been there 1,000 times before. He happily jumped running streams, navigated fallen trees and climbed rocky hills. Since we weren’t sure how he’d react to such a new setting, it was heartwarming for us to watch our “city boy” handle it all in stride. Literally.

Max is now 7 years old, so his few grays hairs have turned into a few more. And on occasion, he seems a little more tired than he used to. But trust us – he still has lots of puppy in him. And we’re looking forward to many more adventures together. (In fact, we have two hiking trips planned for later this year!)

Here are a few photos of Max in action. We’ll see you at Goldzilla!

It’s hard to believe it’s already been a year since we met and adopted Max 12-180. He’s happy, healthy and confident…and has bonded deeply with both of us. And we are truly, madly, deeply in love with him!

Over the last year, Max has had all kinds of adventures, big and small. He still goes to doggy daycare on a regular basis, has graduated from Level One obedience training (and is currently in Level Two) and occasionally volunteers as a RAGOM ambassador.

Here are just a few of the little quirks we love most about Max:

  • The strange little pig grunts he makes, the likes of which we’ve never heard. (And the little “yips” he makes when he’s napping are pretty cute, too.)
  • The hilarious dis-oriented facial expression he has when he first wakes from a nap – as if he’s saying: “Where am I? WHO am I?”
  • The sweet way he’ll wink/blink at us if we blink at him (a little something our dog trainer taught us).
  • The intense way he sits when I’m brushing him – at full attention as if he’s guarding Buckingham Palace.
  • The regal way he’ll sprawl out on the couch – as if posing for a high-end doggy portrait.
  • The klutzy way he lands with a loud THUD each time he lays down on our hardwood floors.
  • The almost drunken-looking way he stumbles to bed when he’s really, really tired.
  • And a million other amazing, distinct and odd things he does…each of which we absolutely adore.

We love our RAGOM boy – and tell everyone we meet why dog rescue through RAGOM is the only way to go.

It's been three months since Max 12-180 walked through our front door and settled right into his new life. We are so grateful to RAGOM for helping us find this goofy, precious, amazing boy. His foster Mom was right--he's exactly as a Golden should be: happy go lucky and up for anything!

Although he'd been an outdoor dog for most of his life, he really had no problem adjusting to our lifestyle and routine. So far, we've been focused on getting to know him, creating a strong bond and having fun adventures. He's been focused on treats and attention. In that order. (He was a little underweight when he came into RAGOM, and we've had no problem putting about 10 pounds on him. He eats and snacks with gusto!)

Some of the things Max loves:

  • Brushing -- He loves to be brushed. He'll lay there, close his eyes and just take in how good it feels. It's adorable. When he came into RAGOM, he was still sporting an outdoor coat--thick and a little coarse. With regular brushing and grooming, it's thinned out and softened up nicely.
  • Petting -- He'd let you pet him for hours and hours. We think he's making up for lost time. He's also a great snuggler and definitely has the golden lean and nudge.
  • Going -- If there's a leash or a car involved, he's in...regardless of where we're going. He loves to look out the window when he's in the car and would stick half his body out the window if we let him.
  • Playing -- Max loves his tennis balls and they're definitely his toy of choice. We've been sending him to doggie daycare once or twice a week and he really likes playing with the other dogs. When we pull into the parking lot, he can't wait to get through the front door!

Some of the things we love about Max:

  • Friendly -- Max loves people. And we mean any and all people. He's been an awesome RAGOM ambassador at a few meet and greets and even worked the RAGOM booth at the State Fair. He was totally in his element! He soaked in that attention for three hours straight! (And slept for about five hours when we got home!)
  • Eager -- When we're working with him and training, he is so eager to learn and please us. When we practice "stay" in particular, he gets this super-intense expression on his face like: "Do you see me? I'm stay-ing!" He likes the challenge.
  • Affectionate -- From the beginning, Max has been very focused on us. He wants to be where we are and he shows us regularly how much he likes us. There is usually slobber involved.
  • Trustworthy -- Max has earned our trust when it comes to people and our house. With people, he consistently greets them very politely -- no more jumping unless he's incredibly excited. And he was super gentle with our just-turned-one-year-old nephew. At home, he hasn't gotten into anything inappropriate (though he's shown us he could if he really wanted to!) He's truly been a near-perfect gentlemen.

Thanks to everyone at RAGOM who helped Max find his way to us, especially his foster Mom Denise. We're head over heels in love with this big goofball and have enjoyed every moment of our time with him.

Here are some pictures of Max. Hope to see you at Goldzilla!

Mr. Max, our big goofball, went to his furever home on Saturday. He was sooooo happy to see his new Mom and Dad he just about jumped out of our fence when they got here. The whole time we were talking and filling out paperwork, Max was going back and forth to each of them. Who says dogs don't pick their owners? I sure think so. It was quite apparent to me on Saturday as our boy started his new life.

A big "Thank You" to the W. family for opening their hearts and home to a rescued Golden. RAGOM could not rescue and rehome as many dogs as they do without people like you. It is so appreciated that you have given our sweet boy Max a home. I know he will be well cared for and loved.

Here is Max and his new family. He was so busy trying to be a lap dog it was hard getting him to look at the camera. Enjoy your new life, Max. It was a pleasure being a place for you to lay your head until you found your very own furever family.

Hello everyone! We have some great news to share - Max has found his furever home! We are so excited and happy that Max is being adopted by a great family where he will be loved and cared for beyond his wildest dreams. Max and his new family spent a couple of hours together and it didn't take long to see that both dog and humans had fallen in love. Max will be leaving for his new home in a few days.

Max has been doing great. We go on our daily walks and he loves playing with his big tennis ball out in the yard. It is quite funny to see how he runs and plays all by himself. He is one sharp cookie and finds ways to keep himself busy even when his humans aren't joining in. Max will be having fun seeing people and going places with his new family. They love taking their dog along as much as possible and I know Max will thoroughly enjoy that.

I have a couple of photos to share to show off our gorgeous boy. In one of them he is sporting a scarf in honor of our previous foster dog Max 07-493 who went to the Rainbow Bridge a few weeks ago. It was sent to us from his adoptive mom since she knew we had another foster dog named Max. Our young Max is wearing it proudly.
