Max 13-130

Max is a handsome 1.5 year old Golden Retriever weighing in at 63 lbs. He was surrendered to RAGOM because he got into a scuffle with another dog at the SO's home.

Max is a young one, so he has a lot of energy. He will jump up on you when really excited. Some of those Golden Retriever traits he has, follows you room to room, laying down by your feet. And loves to carry socks around in his mouth. He isn't to enthusiastic about playing fetch in the backyard. Sometimes he'll bring it back, sometimes he won't.

Everyday I have been taking Max on walks. You would be surprised how well he walks on a flat collar. At first he pulls a little, but as the walk goes on, there's slack on the leash. So if you want a running or walking partner, he's your dog. At his previous home, he was trained on a visible fence and did well with that.

Max has been in 3 homes in his 1.5 years of life. This has taken a little toll on the guy and needs stability in his life. New experiences seem to scare him and he is good at communicating by vocalizing with a growl. He responds well to commands so I just say, "Max, no growling." He has an alpha personality and needs a strong leader to show him what's right and what's wrong. It is highly recommended that his future family takes him to obedience class to help understand Max's issue and build a bond and trust with him.

Since we are still getting to know Max, I wait for him to come up to me for pets. When at my computer he usually comes and nudges my arm or tries to snuggle by my legs. In the morning, I wake up to him giving me kisses on my face or arm.

Max would thrive in an environment as an only dog. At his foster home, there are 2 younger dogs, male and female. Every time I go pet one of them, Max runs over trying to get all the attention. Sometimes when my dogs are too close to him, I can tell it makes him nervous. The other day though, I saw him play with my female dog.

When I am gone at work, I will baby gate him from the other dogs. I did let him have free roam of the entire house when I took my dogs out to the dog park. I would completely trust him for 8 hours, he is house trained and doesn't destroy things.

We have 2 cats in the house, one is a dog hater, who fights back and one isn't. Max gets too excited towards the dog hater cat and chases. But when around the other cat he ignores it.

One absolute requirement for Max's home, is no young kids. I think older dog savvy teens would be fine. Sudden movements from the young kids would probably be too much for him.

Max 13-130 is doing very well since I started fostering him. Max is happy to be coming home with me each night and not being stuck in boarding. He does great in his crate. He goes right in and is a good, quiet boy and sleeps all night without a fuss. In the house, Max is also a good boy. He likes to carry things around but does not destroy anything. He likes to be up on the bed and couch but will get off when you ask him to. Max likes his space while on furniture, so he will growl if you get too close to him or lie next to him, but like I said, he will get off when asked. Max can also be a resource guarder with toys and chews, he has curled his lips and growled at me and my dog while holding a toy but has never done any more than that. Max may do the same if he feels threatened while someone is handling him. He did this once while I was petting his ear and another time while touching his feet. Max is doing this less now as we get to know each other better.

Max loves to run and play fetch with balls or a Frisbee. He will let you take the ball from him no problem other than playing a little keep away. Max loves to play with the ball in the kiddy pool and splash around.

Max knows sit, down, come and stay. He walks nicely on leash but jumps and grabs the leash till he settles down. Max is very excited to see me after I have left him for any amount of time. He jumps up and tries to give hugs and kisses. We are working on this every day.

Max gets very excited when he sees a rabbit or squirrel and wants run after them. He may run away because of this, so Max would do best with a fenced yard. This may also be a problem with cats in the same house.

Max does not know how to play normally with other dogs. He can be very rough and needs to learn his boundaries. My Golden, Jake, will not play with Max but Carson, my Border collie mix, has been trying to teach him better play manners. I have also tried Max with a friend’s dog and he was very pushy with him also. For now, I believe Max would do best as the only pet in the house.

Max rides great in the car. I use a car harness and he just lies down or sits calmly on the back seat. He is a little shy about getting the harness, he gets low to the ground or rolls over but lets me put it on in the end.

Max is a sweet dog who loves getting petted, lying next to you and will follow you from room to room. He is very attached to me but does not seem too concerned when he is left alone.

Max is a young, healthy dog that would do great in an active dog sport like Frisbee, agility, flyball or dock jumping! In fact Max has already started his Dock jumping training and will be out at the dock again soon. Stay tuned for more updates on Max 13-130!

Hi RAGOM fans, Max here.

This past week, I wasn't feeling so well. My foster parents came home to find me limping. They thought maybe I went to chase the cat and somehow injured myself. The next couple of days, I was in so much pain. I would whimper every time I got up and refused to eat - even cooked chicken! Foster mom took me to the vet and they did many tests. They thought that maybe I could have eaten something bad that was stuck in my tummy or even Lyme disease, but no, nothing was abnormal. The regular vet was about to close and then I was admitted into what they call the emergency vet. After some more tests, they had concluded that I had an abscess in my abdomen area. Since I hadn't eaten in 3 days, they made me stay overnight. I had a needle going in my arm to get some fluids in me. I was so happy to see Foster Mom in the morning. Within a couple of days, I was bouncing back to my normal self. RAGOM went to great lengths to figure out what was wrong with me. This kinda stuff isn't possible without wonderful people donating or sponsoring dogs. Thank you, RAGOM!

Max is a complete love bug with humans. It took a few days for him to feel comfortable around us humans, but he is a total Velcro dog. He nudges my arm and puts his two front paws on my lap when I am at my computer. When in my bathroom, he will try to find some space to lay down on the floor. When I come home from work, it's so cute to see how excited he is to see me, so wiggly. And also that's the only times I have heard him bark.

I'm not sure if Max truly enjoys going on car rides. He jumps in and out of the SUV easily. But once in, he lays down, every time. I know most dogs will try to hang their heads out the window, but Max has no interest in doing that. He must like being a safe doggy passenger.

Max, at times, is still unsure about the dogs he shares the house with. There has been a scuffle outside over a frisbee. My dogs will take their turns when a ball/frisbee is thrown, but Max likes to chase every one. For that, I don't think an off-leash dog park would be good for him. If you're thinking about how well Max would do with cats, I feel it will depend on your cat's personality. Max and one of the cats here absolutely don't like each other. With this cat's personality, he will fight back and hiss. With the other cat, there are no problems at all, just a sniff and Max goes on with his day. That cat doesn't fight or hiss at Max, and that's why they get along fine.
