Max/Dusty 07-079

Profile

2/28/07: Max has arrived and he got here just ahead of the snow that started just now! Max is not going to stick around for too long here, he moves to his permanent foster on Saturday. He had to be moved to our house today because the good Samaritan who had him was told by animal control he had to be gone by tomorrow. He's in good hands now and is making himself right at home.

Max was born on 12/19/05 and is just over a year old. Overall he's pretty healthy. He's due for most of his shots in April of this year. He does have a vet appointment for tomorrow to check for a chip and get him one if needed. He weighs just shy of 60 pounds and is very slight. Max and resident dog Cinder met and were just fine, the usual fake poofiness from Cinder and then she wanted to wrestle him to the ground.

We just got him an hour ago, but here are his stats: he is housetrained, which we have seen. He is also crate trained and will go in there if you tell him to. He has not been left to roam about on his own and we aren't going to start that here :) He knows his name and some commands such as Sit, Down, and Shake. He's raises his paw like our old foster Blue 07-025. If he's creeping onto the couch, he responds to "off". We can take things from him without him making a fuss.

Max is a sweetheart and from the notes it sounds like he is afraid of yelling and will cringe. He's pretty submissive to Cinder and also me - "No" or "Ah ah" will get him all wriggly and squirming up to you as an apology. He was fine on a tie out here. It sounds like he is a little confused by what to do on a leash, he also pulls hard when he's on one and we haven't tried a Gentle Leader on him.

I'll update tomorrow after we get to know this guy a little better and his vet appointment. The pics don't do him justice!

Well, Max is here just for the night - and in as little as a few hours he has easily become a foster favorite!! His original temporary foster is leaving for vacation very early tomorrow morning and Max isn't scheduled for transport to his permanent foster until later in the morning, se we were asked if we could overnight this sweet boy until his transport tomorrow. I must say that I am happy we agreed to take this boy overnight - he is just a wonderful dog!!

I wouldn't normally update since we don't really know a whole lot about him, seeing as we'll only have him overnight, but I just had to send in some cute pictures of Max with our resdent golden, Beckham. We were told when Max was dropped off that he wasn't much of a toy dog and also that his other foster friend, Cinder, had yet to coax him into a wrestle session. So, I was a bit afraid that our resident boy Beck would be disappointed with this 'playmate' I had invited for a sleepover! Beckham is very much a playful dog - he just loves when we foster because then he gets a friend to play tug with, chase balls with, and wrestle with. Needless to say, despite the warnings that Max may not join in the play, things have been non-stop since about 5 minutes after Max was dropped off. Beck has convinced Max that balls with sqeakers are loads of fun (can you hear them squeak, squeaking in the background?!), playing tug is doubly fun, and wrestling in chest high snow makes for two very wet dogs and a foster mom that can't stop laughing!

I should also make mention that we have 2 cats and a rabbit who share our home as well as our resident dog (I know, my mother in law thinks we live in a zoo!), and Max has done pretty well with the small animals. He seems to be frightened of them and will stare at them in wonder and if they move, bark at them while backing up! It is pretty cute, but we are trying to discourage the barking and just a soft "uh uh" seems to do the job. I am fairly certain that Max wouldn't hurt a fly - he is just the most docile thing ever and the sweetest pup! We will be sad to see him go tomorrow. Whoever ends up with this boy will be one lucky family!!

Enjoy the pictures!!

Max will be at PetSmart tomorrow - come and meet this guy!

Max and Cinder are loving the snow. You can only see Max's head above it in the back yard. It's also tiring them out since they have to really chug around to get anywhere.

Max was outfitted with a Gentle Leader yesterday and after some brief "bucking bronco" moments, he's now fine with it. Every once in awhile he might remember he's wearing it and will try to bite it off.

Max is just a lover. He follows you wherever you go, and if you're sitting, his head is on your leg. And he's so cute, we just have to pet him :) Max is a dog that appreciates his food and will burp after eating anything. It's very convenient that he waits until his face is close to yours. Max will also chase his tail every once in awhile, and when he catches it, he's pretty surprised that it's attached to him.

There's not much I can say about him - he's an easy foster and a great dog!!!

Well, Max had his vet appointment today and he is totally healthy. Weighs right around 55 pounds and his best range would be 50-53. He was all UTD on shots and is already neutered – no ear infections, even! The only thing he needed was a microchip.

Max is a really sweet boy. Although he is 14 months old, and he has the energy level of a young dog, he calms down very quickly. We have fostered other 1 year olds, and Max is the calmest. Max is very submissive and a loud noise or sudden sound can startle him and he goes right to Greg or me if he's a little freaked out. When Max is excited, he wriggles up to you and then rolls on his back.

Max is enthralled by Cinder's tail – she is part Siberian Husky and her tail curls up. Max thinks it's a GREAT toy; Cinder thinks it's annoying and would rather wrestle with him. Max would do well with another dog in the house, as he is not very daring and could take some direction from a confident dog. However, I don't know that he has to have one. Max is not a dominant dog and doesn't care if another wants to boss him around – he just goes with the flow.

Max is crate trained. He slept in it last night without a peep and will even go in there on his own to lie down and relax. He has not picked up any inappropriate items or put his paws or nose on counters or tables. We don't have to worry about Max causing trouble if he's not in eyesight (which is rare). Max isn't totally interested in fetching balls, but if you hand him one, he's a gentleman and will carry it around to indulge you for a little while.

Max could go through an obedience course, although he knows some commands. Bringing a dog to obedience is such a good bonding experience and for a dog like Max, it would really help him blossom. He does know sit, lay down, shake. He also knows "stay" "up" (he'll give you a hug) and "leave it".

Max is very red, soft, and handsome and the pictures aren't close to what he's like in real life. Email placementatragom [dot] org if you want to make this sweetheart a part of your family.

This is where Max is if we can't find him
