3/26/07: May is a very sweet, but also very scared, 7 ½ year old girl who has had a very stressful life recently.  On Saturday morning she was picked up from a puppy mill and also very, very pregnant.  She then traveled 6 hours to MN.  Saturday night she moved into my house.  Sunday evening she went into labor.  At 6:24 pm she had her first puppy.  At 7:15 pm she had her second.  Then there was a long pause and a trip to the emergency vet.  Then a shot to help her to deliver the pups gave us a pup at 10:41 pm and right away again at 10:48 pm.  Then a long pause again.  Another shot led to a lot of contractions but no pups, so at about 1:15 am it was decided to do a c-section.  4 more pups were born that way for a total of 8 happy healthy puppies!  May is a very, very good mother.  I really enjoy just watching her take care of her babies.  She wasn't so sure about us at first, but every hour it is getting better, to the point that we can even slowly pick up the puppies from her now.

May is named for the month of May, which is when my fiancé and I are getting married.  Her puppies are all given wedding related names.  Look at the pages for DJ 07-208, Bear 07-209, Bubbles 07-210, Blue 07-211, Beau 07-212, Usher 07-213, Sweet Pea 07-214 and Rose 07-215 for more pictures and information on them!

This is a tribute to our May.

February 13th was an extremely sad day for us when we had to help our dear May cross the bridge. She was our sweetest girl ever! She had just turned 8 yrs old when we adopted her. We were very blessed to have her for 7 1/2 yrs. After losing her best fur buddy (13 1/2 yr old Riley) in early Jan she was never the same. Also she had survived 18 months after being diagnosed with lymphoma, a mystery to our vet. She was such a strong puppy mill mom. Our girl will never be forgotten. We miss her so much!

Thanks RAGOM for all you do.

Hi, everybody! I had a lot of fun at Dog Days of Summer today.
I got to meet a lot of people and dogs--and I got lots of treats, too!

But I'm a little sad that I haven't found my forever family yet.

Where are they? I'm sure they're out there somewhere... I hope they find me soon.

Two new pictures are here---one is May laying outside with Winston. May is the dog on the left side. The other picture is May “hovering” over Winston. I still think it’s a hoot that she does this! It’s a very endearing thing to watch.

May has been busy these past couple weeks! She finished up her vet care---she got her teeth cleaned nice and pretty! She’s more gorgeous than before.

Over Memorial Weekend, she got to go “up north” to visit my parents, who have 3 dogs of their own. Of course, she did fine with the dogs, but was scared of the new situation. But, the good news is, she came out of her safe spot many times to see what all the commotion was (lots of people and dogs) and actually walked up to people for pets. It still works best if you don’t directly call her to you, but actually, “ignore” her. Then, she feels safe (like you’re not looking at her) and will approach you for pets. She loves having her ears scratched.

While up north, she got a GReat bath! Thank you very much, Martha (a fellow RAGOM volunteer), for donating your services and giving her the spa treatment! You would not believe the hair that came out, but I think the bulk of her shedding, after delivering pups, is over. You should see her beautiful blonde coat! It’s a shorter blond, with wispy curls. Her tail is gorgeous. She could use a tummy tuck, but even that area looks much better!

While up north, she had to be tied out to go potty. She’s used to my fence and would not go potty on leash. I finally brought her up to Marthas’ (a savior again!) big fenced in yard and she ran off and did her business! It seems to be fairly typical that puppy mill dogs don’t like to potty on a leash-- probably because they are not used to a leash, much less peeing when someone is around. She enjoyed sitting on the dock with Winston and I. I bet she would have gone in the water with Winston, but since she needs to be on-leash with me, I was not about to go in the water with her! Too darn cold!

Her car rides are going about the same. I don’t think she has anxiety issues as much as motion sickness. I’ve learned to cover my floors with old sheets, so when she pukes up her food, it’s an easy clean up. After she gets sick, she lies down and falls asleep next to Winston and Bogie. She doesn’t pace nervously. She drools, but that has gotten better. I may try some “home remedies” for our next car trip and see if anything helps.

May continues to amaze me with her bravery. Can you imagine how scary life must be for her these past few weeks? It’s highly likely she lived at a puppy mill her entire life, with little or no human interaction. Now, she’s exposed to my crazy family life! I think if I had been living in a closet for 8 years and then I was let out into my family, I would be very scared too J The GReat news is, she is slowly learning that people are good and safe. Once she gets to know you, on her own terms, she wants your attention. I honestly believe that once she’s more human-socialized, she will be an “easy” dog. She’ll never be an “obnoxious” puppy or be really hyper. I do believe once she meets her forever family and she learns they have the patience to go her pace, she will be your forever pal!

If you can meet her needs, please let your Placement Advisor know. I’d be happy to talk to you more about her.

May arrived at our home on Saturday, the 5th of May. It was time for her to leave her pups and be socialized. She was welcomed to our home by the two residents, Bogie and Winston and my crazy teenagers and their friends. It is my hope that Winston will step up and show her how to be a Golden. He’s done it with other puppy mill dogs, so I’m hoping he’ll do it again.

May very much wants to be where the action is, but she is afraid. She has found her safe spot in our home, but if she hears action in other parts of the house, she ventures out to see what’s going on. At this point, we are letting her adjust on her own terms. If you approach her or even call her name, she runs the other direction. But, if you just ignore her, she’ll come up for pets. She’s doing pretty good coming and going from outside. I think potty training is going well. Last night she had free roam while we slept and I found no accidents in the house. Today I left the dogs several times and came home to no surprises! Yahoo!

She was spayed when she had her C-section and today she saw the vet. She checked out pretty healthy. She has a double ear infection, but that’s not a biggee. Her weight is close to perfect. I thought she looked heavy, but it’s just from nursing. She is 72 lbs and only needs to lose 2 lbs. Her tummy is always going to be saggy---that’s one of the unfortunate things of being a puppy mill girl. She’s had many litters, possibly up to 6. That stretched skin just isn’t going to go away. What she needs is a little tummy tuck. :) She needs to have her teeth cleaned and she’ll have that done next week.

What does May need? Well, she needs a loving, PATIENT family that is willing to show her the GReat, Golden life! She is very sweet, but very scared still. I know she’ll require a physical fence and another resident dog. Because the first 7 years of her life was spent making babies and nothing more, she needs lot of socialization. So, we intend to show her that there is a better life out there! My gut feeling is she is very, very sweet and really wants to be part of a family, but just doesn’t know HOW to trust yet. We are going to work hard at it, but yet we have to go at HER pace.

P.S. The picture with the basket of hair is ALL from May! I sat down and brushed her for a half hour and the hair just keeps coming out! She’s getting rid of her undercoat and the more I brush her the more beautiful she gets! She has very thick, gorgeous blonde hair!
