Happy Spring to the Golden Seniors from Anonymous
After Barney came into RAGOM it was discovered that his name is Mic. Mic is a large 8 year old purebred golden retriever who weighs 100 pounds. The vet has recommended that Mic lose about 20 pounds and to date, he has lost 5 pounds. Mic is up to date on all his vaccinations, neutered and house trained.
Here is what we know about the big Mic:
He loves to meet everyone. You may have seen the bumper sticker "wag more bark less". Well, that about sums up Barney's personality. He has only barked once (I wish the resident dogs were as polite) and when he wags his tail most of his body wags, too. Mic is currently being treated for ear infections in both ears and for two hot spots. He does seem to be an itchy guy and because hot spots are not all that common in the winter we will try to figure out what is causing him to be so itchy. He had a bath when he first arrived at our home as he had been outside and had some severe matting and a strong farm fragrance. He didn't exactly love the bath. The vet suggested another bath for his itchiness so we will head to the dog wash soon where there is a ramp into the tub and a dryer (which he doesn't like too much either but might be the only way to get him completely dried in a reasonable amount of time).
He has fit in seamlessly with the three resident dogs and shows no aggression of any kind. He will need a home with a minimal number of stairs and if you have hardwood floors, some rugs. Mic is scared of gun shots and even sounds such as a squeaky drawer being opened. He is a strong chewer and can chew inappropriate items (if something is within reach of his mouth when he lays down) so caution on that is needed. (He can shred a tennis ball quite quickly.) He has a softball that he carries around everywhere. (He also likes the oversized tennis balls and has not shredded those.) Mic loves to chew on nylabones. We do not have any cats but I believe he would be fine as he just observes the cats at the vet office and does not show a lot of interest.
He loves to go for car rides and will keep your seat warm while you are in the grocery store. He would need a ramp if you have an SUV. Mic loves to go for walks, walks well on a leash and keeps up a great pace for the 1-1/2 mile loop around our neighborhood. He loves, loves, loves to roll in the snow and the world would be perfect for Mic if there was snow to roll in 365 days of the year. If you had a hill in your yard he could probably roll himself from top to bottom.
Mic currently resides with 3 resident dogs: a 9 year old female golden; a 9 year old male chesapeake bay retriever; and a grumpy 13 year old shepherd/chow mix. (Therefore he is great with other dogs!)
Mic has free roam when we are gone from the house. We have two teenagers and I think he would be fine with kids of all ages, just keep in mind his size, but he is very mellow.
