"Welcome to RAGOM!"

Welcome, Mielo, a 12 year old male purebred Golden Retriever being fostered in Sioux Falls SD. Mielo means ‘honey’ in Esperanto and his name fits him. He is as sweet as honey and also honey colored with a curly coat. I tell him his name should be Curly but he answers to Mielo.

Two weeks ago, I was looking at kayaks on Craigslist when I switched to search dogs on Craigslist Sioux Falls SD where I live. There I found Mielo listed. He was on Craigslist because his family was moving and he would be put down if a new home wasn’t found. At 12 years old his previous owner described him as ‘still active and goes hunting.’ I contacted RAGOM and they took him in ASAP.

With my foster, Sweety 11-175 soon to be adopted, Mielo turning up on my Craigslist search was Fate at work. I went to meet him at boarding during the week and he seemed nice. When Sweety’s adoption went through on the weekend, I picked up Mielo two hours later. Mielo is a very sweet dog and when he met my dog Bella, he gave her kisses. She was a little aloof for a few days but now they’re buddies. He doesn't give her any grief. She patiently dangled a stuffed animal at him last night trying to get him to play tug of war with her. He did a little.

Mielo weighs about 70 lbs. and has a nice coat that makes him look bigger than he is. He is a good weight for his size. The vet says he’s in good health for his age. While visiting the vet we met a young child, various dogs and other people. Mielo was good with all of them and eager to make friends.

While I am at work, Mielo rests in his crate with the door open. He shows no separation anxiety or counter surfing. He is not destructive. He is housebroken. He rides well in the car. Now that it’s not bitter cold here in SD, we’ve been out for some snowy walks. Mielo walks nicely. He’s quiet, gentle and very affectionate—a lovely senior dog who could be your best friend.

Updates

Sunday, March 31, 2013

Mielo’s update is finally here. He has been working at getting healthy and making friends with his vet, Dr. Mike, and the staff. Let’s see there have been parasites, ear and respiratory infections, annoying fatty tumors removed, teeth cleaned and finally, a diagnosis of a thyroid condition. All treatable and now Mielo is feeling great for an 11+ year old dog.

Meanwhile, he’s been going for walks, visiting parks throughout our area where he can pretend he’s out hunting, finding his favorite places to sleep in the house and enjoying his life. Yesterday, he picked up a stuffed animal, tossed it and caught it and played with it enjoying the nice spring weather.

And yesterday, Mielo met his forever family. They live here in Sioux Falls, attend school and daycare in the neighborhood and want him to join their family tomorrow. He is so lucky! He’ll have a doggy companion with Scout and two little girls to love him. Mom and Dad are in love with him too and want to make a home for this sweet senior dog.
