It's with an extremely heavy heart that I write to tell you that we had to say goodbye to our beloved Miles earlier this year after a brief battle with cancer. He had beat cancer once before, years ago, but this time there was nothing we could do.

We only had a week with him after the diagnosis, but we were fortunate to be able to spend a lot of good, quality time together in that week. His appetite had changed, so I made him home cooked meals. He slept in bed with me, which was a win-win because we both slept much better in such close proximity.

We spent lots of time cuddling and talking and reminiscing. Although it was stressful and heartbreaking, it was also precious and therapeutic, and there's nowhere else I would rather have been. My husband and I held him as he peacefully slipped away - one of the hardest things I have ever had to do, even knowing it was the right decision.

I grieve not only for the loss of his life here with us, but also the life he deserved as a pup, before he was rescued.

Miles was our first rescue dog and we went through so much together in the 10 years we had with him. We adapted our lifestyle around his needs to make him feel more secure, until it simply became second nature.

In the early days it felt like a burden, but later it felt like a gift. How humbling it is to be able to provide something so basic to someone who is so very grateful. He undoubtedly made me a better person, and he will always hold such a special place in my heart.

I will miss our daily walks, his "talking", being forced to keep the kitchen spotless, sharing bowls of popcorn and snuggling on the couch at the end of a long day, seeing him curled up in his beloved chair in front of the living room window, the way he placed his paw over my arm when I pet him as if to say "thank you, I love you too, please don't stop," his unconditional love, and a million other things.

Thank you again to all of the RAGOM volunteers, and especially to his loving foster family that choose us to be his forever family. He couldn't have been more loved.

A few months ago, our Miles was diagnosed with arthritis in both of his hind legs. His vet says we caught it early, but we were devastated since he's only six years old. It makes me wonder if he sustained some sort of injury before he was rescued, but I guess we'll never know.

As luck would have it, our wonderful vet clinic had just hired a new vet that specializes in canine chronic pain and rehabilitation, just when Miles began having issues. She prescribed three short walks per day, daily exercises at home, and weekly cold laser therapy treatments with her, along with continuing his daily supplements.

My first thought was "how am I supposed to find time for all of this?"  With a full-time job, two small children, two dogs, and a husband that travels for work, it would be easy to come up with a million excuses why we can't do this. Many people would probably even consider some of them good excuses. But a good excuse is still just that - an excuse. So I made up my mind right then and there that if three walks per day, daily exercises, and weekly cold laser therapy treatments was what he needed, then that's what we'd give him. Often times that means I'm out early in the morning or late at night, while the kids are in bed, walking back and forth in front of our house, not wanting to be too far away with the kids asleep inside. The neighbors probably think I'm crazy, but this is what dedication looks like when someone you love needs you.

Although I try to practice gratitude all year round, there's something about this time of year that makes me really think about everything we have to be thankful for, and this year is no exception. The new vet hired at our clinic specializing in exactly what we needed, just when we needed it. The new cold laser therapy treatment that she brought with her, that otherwise would not have been an option. Flexible work schedules that allow us to balance the needs of our family with our work, which makes it relatively easy to bring Miles in for his weekly appointments. Access to such wonderful vet care only a few blocks from our home, also easing the burden of weekly vet visits. The financial resources to afford the extra vet bills, and warm outdoor gear for our now chilly walks. The love that we receive from Miles, and watching him interact so gently with our children, who adore him. Finding him snuggled up next to Abby (our other dog) on the dog bed when I wake up in the morning. I could go on and on, but the point is that even in the face of unwanted news, there is still so much to be thankful for, and so we choose to focus on that.

Now, before you start feeling too sorry for Miles, let me leave you with this. Miles has always craved attention - any kind of attention he could get. And, he's always been quite the scavenger, forcing us to keep a very clean kitchen. So when you factor in the extra attention and treats he gets for participating in his daily therapy, it almost makes me wonder if he's doing this for show....almost. :)

I have been meaning to send an update for quite some time, but it seems like something always pulls me in another direction.  Miles is doing great!  We just celebrated his 6th birthday last week and it's hard to believe it's been almost six years since he came into our lives.  I almost can't remember a time when I didn't diligently keep my kitchen counters spotless and store food in the microwave, out of reach.  :)  He has been on a few road trips with us in the past couple years, and despite his anxiety about new places and being left behind, he's done well and I'm so proud of him.  We have two kids now, as well as our other dog Abby whom we've had since we brought Miles home.  Our daughter is just about four and loves to play dr with Miles, read books with him, and snuggle.  He just soaks it up, never moving an inch except to wag his tail and maybe give a kiss or two. Now that the weather is nice, we walk to the park most nights after supper.  It never fails, there is a circle around us as the neighborhood kids gather round for their pets and kisses from the dogs.  Miles usually rolls onto his side, inviting them to rub his belly as well. He really loves kids and the kids love to hear his rescue story.  We are so thankful for everyone that helped bring Miles into our lives and can't imagine life without him!

Wow, time sure flies and a lot has changed since my last update.  Mom and dad have been really busy, so I thought I'd write my own update this time.

I have a lot of new responsibilities now with baby Hailey here, but let me tell you - the older she gets, the better it gets for me!  My newest job is to clean up the floor and her high chair after meal times.  For some odd reason, mom doesn't always seem to appreciate this, but the way I see it, it's a win-win: less work for mom and more food for me!  But it gets better - she shares!  Yup, that's right, we have an agreement that whatever she doesn't want to eat, she gives to me before mom and dad can whisk it away to the garbage can.  Sometimes we get caught (she's not always sneaky enough) and sometimes we don't, but I like the way this kid thinks!

I had a proud big brother moment the other day.  Mom and dad have been trying to get Hailey to walk for days.  They'll stand a couple of feet apart and try to coax her to take steps towards them, but she usually just sits down on the floor.  But the other day we were hanging out in her room while mom put laundry away, and when Hailey thought mom wasn't looking, she took four steps to get to me.  That's right - four steps, the most she's ever taken, and all because she wanted to get to me.  When she got to me, she sat down by me like it was no big deal, and I gave her a couple of licks to let her know she did a good job.

So let's recap - I clean, I entertain, and I've taught Hailey to share and walk.  And my rewards?  Food, of course, but also lots of laughs, snuggles, and unconditional love.  What else could a guy ask for?!

Me and Hailey, with Abby chillin in the background.
See, I told you I'm her favorite.

I know I just sent in an update for Miles, but I just have to send this new picture. We recently brought our daughter home from the hospital and I must say - we underestimated our Mr. Miles! He has a very nurturing side - he comes running when he hears her cry and for the first few nights, he got up with me when it was time to feed her. He'd stagger out of our bedroom, still half asleep, and look at me as if to say "it's time to get up again already?" He's such a good boy!

It's hard work being a big brother!

Some of our favorite things that make Miles, well...Miles:

  • He loves his bones! He knows to get one (or two - a boy can never have too many bones!) when he's about to get wild and instead he'll lie down and chew on it
  • The way he tenderly grooms Abby many mornings, even though she never reciprocates :)
  • Watching him try (usually unsuccessfully) to catch bugs and raindrops in his mouth
  • How messy he is when he gets a drink of water...I don't know how he does it, but our floor are always wet
  • How content he is just to lay outside in the grass, soaking up the sun
  • How he sits near his food dish, leaning up against the kitchen cabinets when he wants to be fed (whether it's meal time or not :) )
  • The way he prances when we're on a walk, as he takes in all of the sights, sounds, and smells
  • The way he nicely sits and lifts up his paw to get his harness on in preparation for a walk
  • Watching him sit in his chair that looks out into the front yard - he LOVES to watch the world go by - and often times when I come home from work, I can see his head pop up to look for me when I hit the garage door button
  • When he has a toy he knows Abby wants or something that's not his, like a sock, and he flaunts it in front of you, trying to get someone to chase him and/or play tug
  • He actually watches volleyball games. When I take him to watch his dad play, he gets a front row spot, lies down, and focuses on the game (I can see his head move back and forth with the ball - what a goofy guy!)
  • The way he tries to dig in the sand. Apparently no one ever taught him the proper way to dig...he tries to use both of his front paws simultaneously instead of alternating them. :)
  • Watching him try to get his favorite toy in the pond when it's just beyond his reach. He refuses to swim, so he runs around, trying to get at it from different angles before eventually giving up and looking at Abby as if to say "ok, will you just get it for me?" (and of course she happily obliges!)
  • And finally, my all time favorite thing about Miles - his uncontrollable waggy tail. He could be sleeping across the room from you and all it takes is the mention of his name and his tail will start to "thump, thump". Or if he knows you're talking to him - he LOVES to be talked to - his tail thumps faster and faster against the floor until you pet him, and then he rolls over for a belly rub, soaking it all up.

Thank you, RAGOM, for saving our silly, sweet boy and for helping us find each other. He keeps us on our toes and we can't imagine life without him. We're expecting a little girl in a couple of weeks and if only he knew what was in store for him, I know he'd be super excited. He LOVES kids and is quite popular with the neighborhood kids. :)

Miles has been with us for over a month now, and he’s growing like a weed!  He’s gained about ten pounds and is now just as tall as his three year old fur sister, Abby.  His little body is finally catching up to his big, cute blockhead.  He and Abby got off to a rocky start.  Abby was not impressed with Miles’s attempts to initiate play (by biting her) and tried to tell him to knock it off, but that just made him try harder.  He still play bites her, but not nearly as often, and he’s getting better about listening when we tell him “no”.  He now tries other tactics, such as flaunting toys in front of her face and rolling around on the floor next to her.  They enjoy a good tug session every now and then and we even caught them napping nicely together last weekend. :)

We started Miles in a puppy class right away and it’s been really great for him.  We work on commands, of course, but we also use the agility equipment for trust and confidence building exercises.  He’s extremely food motivated and very smart, which makes training easy and fun.  Last week Abby stayed with my parents (where she was spoiled rotten, no doubt), so we could really focus on working with Miles.  It turned out really well – he’s such a fast learner!

At home, Miles really enjoys playing with squeaky toys and bones, and he loves the snow.  We have some pretty big snow drifts in our yard and he loves to climb them, dig holes, stick his face in the hole, and then eat snow chunks.  He’s such a goofball!  He also likes to carry shoes around.  One day Joe couldn’t find his glove.  I found it downstairs in a corner of the living room where Miles had apparently piled a number of shoes, boots, and the glove...his own little stash of our things.  While we’re at work, he has free roam of the upstairs, and does very well as long as we keep the house clean.  He’s definitely a velcro dog.  He loves to be as close as he can get, and if I stand still in the kitchen long enough, he curls up at my feet.  At night he likes to sleep under our bed.  He’s really good about sleeping through the night, but he’s definitely an early riser.  Sometimes if I lay on his doggie bed on the floor with him, he’ll sleep a little longer on the weekends. :)

My favorite thing about Miles, though, is the soft little “happy whimper” he makes when we pet him.  He usually only does it if we’ve been gone for a while, but it’s the sweetest noise.  His tail thumps again and again and he rolls onto his side or his back and is sooooo happy.  It’s like he’s so thankful he has someone to love him, he just can’t help it.

Thanks RAGOM volunteers, for all you do, and especially for helping Miles on his journey to find us.

"Someone my age!" - Blossom 09-382

Merry Christmas! - Joe, Kristin, and Abby

Saturday, December 5, 2009

Original Initial Bio:

We picked Miles up late Saturday afternoon (12-5-09). He rode well in the car but was too scared to get in or out on his own. Miles was found wandering the streets of Brooklyn Park so we do not know his exact age. He is somewhere between 4-6 months of age.

Our vet says his body size is closer to four months but he has his adult teeth which they normally get around 6 months. Our vet feels he will be a smaller golden around 60 lbs. Of course there is no way to know for sure until he is full grown. He weighs 34 lbs and is up to date on his vaccinations. He still needs to be neutered.

Miles is also being treated for roundworms. He had his first dose today (12-8-09) and will need the second dose in two weeks.

Miles is a happy boy. He enjoys being around us and our resident goldens. He loves attention but also settles down quickly and is content just being in the same room with you. He sleeps quietly in his kennel all night.

If you are thinking of adopting him for Christmas please remember he is not a gift you can set aside in a few days. He deserves a family that will always love and care for him. Please contact your placement advisor if you are interested in Miles.
