Millicent 08-021

Profile

This is a sweet, one year old, female Golden mix fostered in Stratford, IA. For the past several weeks she was cared for by a kind rancher. In the rancher's words Millicent was "found 11/23/07 starving/ cold/ exhausted/ in pain, back left leg obviously sore and superficial wounds on both back legs. She is very loving and soaks up affection."

The kind rancher took good care of her but was unable to find Millicent's people. Millicent got along well with all of her horses, all but one of her dogs (who chose to pick fights with Millicent), and all the people at the ranch. When the search for owners was exhausted, the kind rancher took Millicent to visit a vet, received a diagnosis she was unprepared for, and then called RAGOM.

Magnificent Mama Millicent........any day now. The vet informed the rancher that Millicent is quite pregnant! She will be a Mama, quite literally ANY DAY. Keep an eye on her website, this will be fun!

Millicent is doing very well with her new forever family! A few comments from her new mom:

Millicent spent the night on her little round bed upstairs. She is learning where to find her toys. She likes to lay down beside my computer chair while I type away. She met 'Digger', her backyard neighbor Brittany Spaniel yesterday afternoon and they played and wrestled until they were both soaking wet from all the melting snow! They really like each other. Today Millicent's favorite toy has been the rope toy with a knot in each end. Yesterday she liked the yellow tennis ball best. She is a gem.

I have been to the vet. She says that I am very sweet. Since the vet said it, then it is an official medical diagnosis. I have been diagnosed as very sweet.

I have also been diagnosed with Telogen Defluxion. Oh, I'm sorry, for those of you who haven't finished vet school that is the official name of the condition commonly called Effluvium. Yep, E-f-f-l-u-v-i-u-m. Are you thinking I've been hit with a Harry Potter spell? Well, it means that I had babies and now I'm shedding like no other and am nearing baldness. What does that mean for daily life? A good vaccuum cleaner! Foster mom is going nuts!

My babies are basically weaned. I am increasing my activity level and sleeping really well at night. I no longer sleep between the kids, now I sleep UNDERNEATH the kids (the actual kids, in their beds). But, you need to know, I prefer creamer in my coffee. Just leave your cup on the floor a few minutes, thanks. I give hugs, too. Press your cheek to my ear and I will wrap my head around your neck. I stay very still to have my nails clipped but I like to actually "watch" the brush while I'm being groomed. The resident dog and I are eating out of the same bowl now -- at the same time. We just both stick our noses in the bowl and eat.

I'm very thankful that I was found by that kind rancher, and that RAGOM was able to find me a foster home where I could raise my puppies. I am so full of love for everybody and I am going to be a Golden Dog for my forever family. Please take a look at my babies and consider giving them a Golden Home, they are all very sweet and I have tried to teach them how to be good dogs.

Hi again. I'm sending a couple pictures of my cat, umm, "friend". I think you can feel the essence of our relationship. I barked and play-bowed, but she wouldn't run, so I lost interest. She often comes and sits someplace where I can see her - I think maybe she's teasing me. So, that means that SHE is the naughty one, not me.

Here's a picture somebody caught of me working in the kitchen. Aren't I a big help? I am the cleaner-upper - if it drops on the floor I will clean it up. I stay very still while fostermom steps over and around me - she often tells me "no, that's ok, don't move or anything, just stay right there in my way."

I continue to be amazing with the children - I love love love kids. I am also spending less time with my pups and should start to seriously wean them soon. I keep the rabbits out of the yard, and bark at the deer. If you leave your coat on the floor, that's where I'll take my next nap. You should also know that this foster home is very chaotic and noisy, I mean REALLY chaotic and noisy; I remain a cucumber, cool and calm. All that craziness and noise doesn't bother me a bit. As a matter of fact, I like to watch it all happen around me. I only add to it when I'm invited (which is only 90% of the time).

I caught this cute mother-son moment on camera and thought I'd share it with you. I think they are discussing how to get thru the maze of kids.

Hi there, RAGOM friends. My pups are growing and I'm starting to think about my forever home. I think I'd be happy almost anywhere. I love kids, and I love adults. I love car rides, I love other dogs. I love food and I mostly love to have my head on a lap. I'm sending a few pictures of a recent lazy morning. I was cuddled-up so nicely with my dog friend that fostermom laughed. Can you tell where one dog ends and the other begins?

I have been sleeping on the floor between the kids' beds at night, when I'm taking a break from my own children. Fostermom must really trust me to allow me to sleep wherever I want! I do not need a fenced yard if you are attentive. I spent some time in the fenced barnyard yesterday and I HATED it - I like to be with the people. Oh, and I like to go as far from the house as possible to do my smelly job. I'm shedding something awful right now, and that is normal for a nursing mom so I'm not worried.

I'm really excited to meet my forever family. If you are ready to meet me, please let RAGOM know. Fostermom says "hurry" before fosterdad gets too attached.

Woof! I'm taking over my updates again. I feel great. I'm sending new pictures. You can see from the pictures that I've progressively gotten my perky attitude back since the babies came.

Let's see, I'll send this one where I'm suppose to let the kids nap -- ha ha, I love waking them up. My eyes are glowing, but that's because fostermom needs to update her camera. And I'll send this one where I'm just sitting around with the 4 year old boy, we're watching a cat on the ledge above us (I sure would like to catch that cat). I spend most of my time with that boy, and with his 6 year old sister. Oh, and here's a picture of me waiting to chew on a bone. My dog friend and I share really well, and we actually take turns with real bones. We like to play. I think I'll send this last one where I'm just standing around being cute. I'm not a beauty queen, but I'm darn cute. And people can't keep their hands off my soft soft fur. I love people, really really love people. Sometimes I rub my head on them just like a cat. Speaking of cats, there goes one now.....

A personality is beginning to emerge! You already know Millicent is a mama. Millicent is also.......a puppy. We are definitely seeing that she's a very young dog. She is quite playful now, and bats at the resident dog with her front paws. She bounces on all four paws and races around the house after the kids. She carries various toys around, but will drop them immediately when told. She is not mature enough to be 100% well-behaved, but she is very easy to correct and redirect. She is "mouthy" when she plays, but never bites down. She does not counter-surf or get into the garbage. She DID steal a muffin from a chair this morning (that doesn't count, tho, does it?). She walks nicely on a leash. At this time I would have to say that Millicent is a well trained puppy.

Cats? Well, I think she would worry a cat too much. We have two cats that are very dog-savvy, and I can usually leave them to solve any dog problems on their own. Millicent, tho, doesn't take the hint. She pesters them, batting at them, making goofy noises and playbowing. My cats don't play with dogs. When they fly in her face with all claws, Millicent just closes her eyes. Then they run and the chase is on. There's been no bloodshed, but my furniture is sure taking a beating! I wouldn't say "NO CATS", but a cat may become upset if Millicent entered the home.

Please, please, let RAGOM know (placementatragom [dot] org) if you would like to give Millicent a Golden Life. She's such a doll, she deserves a great family like yours.

We had a mild surprise recently. I checked the puppies yesterday afternoon and counted SIX. Six? What? Millicent had added a stuffed puppy, the same size and color of her own, to the litter. We all giggled about it, and the kids thought it was quite cute. It belonged to the human girls, tho, so they took it back to their room. Ten minutes later, here comes Millicent carrying the stuffed puppy. What? Well, the human girls looked forlorn and explained that Millicent followed them around until they gave it back. So, I guess for now, Millicent has 6 puppies. The other puppies are jealous -- "Stuffy" is already housetrained, cratetrained, free-feeds.......

Hello my new RAGOM friends. This is Millicent. I must be brief, because I am so very weak. My puppies were born by c-section early Wednesday morning. I tried hard to birth them myself, but I have a back injury that we didn't know about and the pups could not pass through.

My babies are beautiful and I am very proud of them. I have 3 daughters and 2 sons. They are all very healthy and vigorous. We are all home now and I must try to regain my strength so I also make enough milk for these 5 large pups. Please forgive me for making this update so short, but I must return to my pups now. Fostermom is sending a couple pictures, and you can see in one that I am still groggy from surgery. Aren't my babies precious?
