February 2, 2010:

Please welcome Miss Millie. She made the long road trip from Sioux Falls SD on Saturday. Many thanks to Rona for saving this girl and Sheila, John and Karen for transporting her to Eagan.

Millie is an 8 year old golden mix. Since she was a stray her age is approximate. She is petite and does need to lose about 8 pounds so we have already started working on that. She is extremely round. I call her “my little tick” because that is what she reminds me of. Broccoli and lettuce are a definite no but she really loves apples!

My speculation is that Miss Millie has not had a good life. Upon meeting her you will have a hard time not shedding a tear. After you wipe your tear, you will get extremely angry at whoever neglected this poor girl for a very long time. Then like me, you will want to see her get help and turn her into a pain free happy girl. Check out that face. She is adorable. She needs to learn to trust and in just a couple days she has come a long way. I call her my little train wreck.

She arrived and seemed to be in quite a lot of pain so off to the vet we went. They increased her pain meds which has helped tremendously. For now, we want to control that pain until we have a plan for moving forward. Her medical issues are:

  • 2 blown knee caps
  • Osteoporosis
  • 3 compressed discs in her back
  • Spondylosis
  • Elevated Liver enzyme which could be due to her osteoporosis
  • Mast cell tumor on her right chest. Most times this is benign but it will have to be removed.
  • 2 ear infections. Staph infection. Her tail and anal area is so swollen. They believe that she had fleas at some point in her life and was biting at them which created her skin infection.
  • Hard of hearing
  • Poor eyesight

I asked myself “How could anyone let this happen?” I wish I knew.

Millie is scheduled to meet with a specialist next week to look at her X rays. Dr R will advise us what our next steps are. Whatever they may be, she is and will be a very expensive girl. If you have ever thought of sponsoring a Ragom dog, Millie would be honored to be chosen. Any dollar amount would be appreciated. We always used to say it took a village to raise our kids. It truly will take a village to give Millie the life she has been deprived of and is so deserving of.

For now, we manage as best we can. Stay tuned. I am hoping to have only positive things to report.

Millie has a urinary tract infection, so I will be starting her on antibiotics today. The other test on her urine showed an elevated reading for cortisol, but this could be caused by the infection. We are going to clear that up and then retest her in 10 days. This means we still don’t know if we will be treating her for Cushing’s disease. We will do one step at a time.

When I take her to St Therese Care Center to visit she gets lots of attention. Several people have mentioned that she is a pretty dog. She does not look like a typical golden, but she still hits the sweet spot in many hearts. We were sitting by a glassed in aviary watching the birds. She was very interested in them. She was content to just look until one of the larger birds landed on the floor of the cage. She jumped up and wanted to chase that bird! I think she would have gotten it too, but the leash kept her at a safe distance. I took a couple of pictures of her on bird watch. She was very alert.

I think that the only complaint she has is NOT ENOUGH FOOD! I have her on a restricted diet and she would like MORE than she is getting. She will feel better if she can reduce the weight on her weak back legs.

Millie continues her downward spiral. She was seen by the specialist on Friday who confirmed everything we already knew with another addition. She has Cushings disease. Cushings is caused either by a pituitary or adrenal tumor. If it is caused by a tumor in the pituitary gland that would cause hormone abnormality. If it is caused by a tumor in the adrenal gland, that would cause hormone abnormality but would also be a malignant tumor. They did a blood test and we are waiting for the results. We really, really have our paws crossed for this one. She still is staying with Jenny the tech. I am so thankful that Millie too has wormed her way into her heart and could not let her be boarded. I stopped to see her today but Jenny was not working. Spending time with our girl I hope!

This girl has never ever caught a break. I so wish that finally after all these years, she would get it. I am asking all of you to keep her in your thoughts and prayers. This has been a very long, painful and expensive road for our Miss Millie. I know she has a huge following. Want to keep you all updated as much as I know. Now I just think about her and have to hold back the tears.

And thank you again Dennis and Joann M and Judith C for your big heart in helping Millie. If only thru the years, people like you had opened their heart to help this girl.

My dear sweet Millie had a tough couple days. She decided to quit eating and when she doesn’t eat, I cannot get her pills in her. I was not sure if the meds gave her a stomach ache or why she chose not to eat. I stopped and got her 6 different cans of food to no avail. She was not drinking which really concerned me. So off to the vet she went. They examined her and go figure, she was much easier to examine this time and did eat for them which gave them the opportunity to give her the meds she needed. ??? Who knows why. I wish I could just sit her down and ask her a ton of questions. Why would someone choose to hurt you like this? The plan was to leave her at the clinic to be boarded until her Monday appointment with the orthopedic surgeon. As much as that broke my heart, my resident dog does not do well with a sick dog in the house and I was not feeling good either. But My Millie worked her charm and the vet tech asked for permission to take her home. She also has a Ragom dog so we felt she was in good hands. Sweet deal Millie.

But she has such a long, long road ahead of her. They found some more bumps on her and also determined that her ear is damaged probably from a fight or possibly abuse?? Oh my. When does it end for this poor girl? The tears still come for me. I do not believe she would hurt a flea and what pleasure could you get from hurting her? She has the right to be pain free and finally live a happy life. I do not believe she has had a happy day since she was born. Hopefully Ragom will change all that for you sweet Millie. You have a very large village who cares immensely about you. And I bet it will just keep growing.

Many thanks again and again to her sponsors: Judith C. and Dennis and Joann M. Without help like yours, Millie doesn’t stand a chance. Please keep her in your thoughts and prayers.

You coming????

Such very sad eyes

Words are just not enough for the support this girl has been given. To have 2 sponsors is more than I could have ever hoped for. A huge thank you to Judith C and Dennis and Joann M for seeing something special in her. A Gigantic thank you to Jane Nygaard who started this 25 years ago. Without her, what would have become of these thousands and thousands of dogs? She started this organization with a village of 2. My how it has grown. And the number of dogs needing this village has grown also. I have not fostered that many dogs but I can say that I have never seen a dog in worse shape than Millie. How she can perk her ears and wag that very sore tail is beyond me. I try very hard to hold back the tears.

She has a very long road ahead of her. We will know much more when she sees the orthopedic surgeon on Monday.

Please, please stay posted and know your thoughts, prayers and donations are so very much appreciated.

Ooohh... my sore tail.
