Molly 09-353

Profile

Hello everyone!  Allow me to introduce Miss Molly!  She arrived in Burnsville today, after a 2 day car ride from Tennessee.  She is a darling southern gal that we are looking forward to getting to know better.

Molly is 5 years old and was used as a breeding dog.  We are told that she has had several litters of puppies and was not living in the best conditions.  Despite this, she is good natured and met our 2 resident female dogs with absolutely no problems.  She is not skittish and enjoyed hanging out in the kitchen with me this afternoon while I cooked, despite the noise and constant activity.  I'm sure the cubed cooked chicken I was feeding her helped.  She has that wonderful golden attribute of wanting to be close to her humans.

We all took a walk this evening and she is now resting on the floor close to me.  She did very well on the walk although we can tell that leash walking is new to her.

Molly will be going to the vet tomorrow for a good check up.  What we know about her health so far is that she has entropian eyelids (rolling inward), needs to be spayed, and may need some dental work.  She is up to date on all of her shots.

We'll write again soon as we learn more.

Molly had cancer and it was spreading rapidly. She was euthanized today. She was one of I think three dogs that were brought up from Tennessee from a puppy mill.

So sweet but stubborn to the end. I only had her for 2 years, I wish it could have been many more. I have been so lucky with all my adopted dogs and she was no exception. She will be forever missed.

Hello everyone!  I'm sorry we've not sent in an update in a couple of weeks but Molly has been keeping a low profile, hanging out with us, and healing from her surgery.  She had scratched open the incision on her face a couple of times but she's healing up nicely now.  Her stitches and staples were removed 2 days ago and today we were finally able to remove the e-collar.  I gave Molly a good bath and she looks and feels like a new girl!  What a relief it must be for her to be rid of that e-collar!  She has been trotting around, playing with toys and totally enjoying herself.  You can tell by her body language that she's feeling gr-reat!  She hasn't had any further trouble with her eyes.

Now we can get down to the business of finding this sweetheart her forever home!  Even though Molly is a puppy mill dog, I do not believe that she needs another dog in the house.  She's totally fine with other dogs, but does not need them to model dog behavior.  She does not exibit any PM behaviors and is confident in herself.  I would like to see her go to a home with a fenced in yard because she is still getting used to being on a leash.   She's not a high energy dog but will chase after a squirrel with gusto!  Molly spent the weekend with an 8 and 12 year old boy and was very good.  She sat nicely when they petted her and would nudge them for more.  I'd say she is good with children of those ages but Molly has not been around children smaller than that.

Molly has never had an accident in the house and will potty soon after going outside.  She sits in front of the door when she wants out and when she wants back in.  She barks a little when my dogs bark, but she's generally not a barker.  She does not guard her food or any toys.  She's not the kind of dog that eagerly eats anything you put in her dish.  This girl has had so much medicine snuck into her food that she suspiciously smells what you give her before eating it.  I can't say I blame her.  I bought a canned food that she really liked until she found an antibiotic capsule in it.  She won't touch that canned food anymore.  She's no dummy.  She eats her dry dog food just fine though, and really likes hamburger and rice.

Molly will occasionally lay on the couch.  I know I should discourage it, but since she wasn't feeling well, I allowed it.   I melt when she puts her head in my lap and takes a nap.  I'm going to begin showing her how nice it is to lay on her dog bed in the living room instead.  She loves to be petted and will nudge us for more.  She enjoys being with her humans and has a sweet personality.  She is calm in the car and will happily crawl in the back seat for a car ride.  Molly does not know how to jump but I believe that's common for puppy mill dogs.  She doesn't know how to go down stairs either.  She's fine with the 2 steps to get into our back yard from the deck but will not use the stairs to follow me into the basement.  We will work on these skills in the coming days.

Molly's fur will be growing back in the areas where she's been shaved and the loose skin on her belly from having many litters of puppies will tighten up over time. She has the classic golden retriever look and is a beauty to behold.  Molly is a nice companion and will make a wonderful pet for someone!  Come and visit with us at the RAGOM picnic!

Molly has fit into our family without a hitch. She gets along with our dogs and our cat and is housebroken!!  On her third day with us, we left Molly uncrated during our workday and came home to  find no accidents and nothing disturbed.  Good girl Molly!  She's affectionate and friendly and playful at times.  She seems to enjoy playing with balls the most.  Molly is a total love bug and follows me everywhere I go.  She is gentle and rarely barks.

After her visits to the vet, we have learned more about her health. During Molly's spay surgery this week, she also had 3 tumors removed.  There was one on her face, one at the base of her tail, and one on her chest.  We do not know yet if the tumors are cancerous.  The lab report takes 7-10 days to come back.   She had a hematoma on her left ear that was drained also.  Hematomas can develop on a dogs ears when they shake their too vigorously and break the blood vessels in the ears.

Molly's teeth were cleaned but she will likely need to have one or two extracted at some time in the future.  She has worn down to the gum all of the small teeth she had in the front, on top and bottom.  Her large canines on the bottom are also worn down to the gums.  The vet speculated that she may have been chewing on metal bars or the like over a long period of time to have worn away her teeth to this degree.  These damaged teeth have the pulp exposed and are basically dead.  The good news is that they don't seem to bother her.  She still eats and chews on bones.

We have a prescription ointment (Trioptic) that we put in Molly's eyes twice a day to clear up an eye infection.  She is on Benadryl and an antifungal drug to combat the itchy coat she had when we first got her.  She is not nearly as itchy now as she was.  From her spay surgery, she is on an antibiotic and a pain med.  She weighs 75 pounds and the vet said he'd like to see her gain a little weight.

Molly will go back to the vet sometime around the 4th of September to have her staples and stitches removed.  Right now, she has to wear that funny looking e-collar (plastic cone) as a precaution to keep her from licking her incisions.  We try to keep her calm and comfortable to speed her recovery.  My heart goes out to this poor sweet girl that has gone through so much. She's on the mend though!  We pray that her lab results do not come back as cancer and that she gets healthier each day that goes by.
