Meet Molly! She is an adorable Golden Retriever/Lab mix. Molly is 5 months old and recently spayed. She was surrendered by a loving family that could not afford to care for her. You see, Molly has diabetes insipidus and requires meds daily to control it. This is not the diabetes that everyone knows about where the body can't regulate it's blood sugar and needs insulin injections and special diets to stay regulated. This kind of diabetes is from a lack of vasopressin (antidiuretic hormone)--a hormone. The symptoms of DI are excessive drinking and excessive urination. So Molly gets eye drops twice a day that have the hormone she needs in them. She is well controlled and is fully house trained. She keeps her crate dry at night and during the day until her dog walker comes--about 6 hours right now. Being 5 months old, her bladder will get bigger as she grows and she will be able to go for a normal work day. Molly's life expectancy is not shortened by this disease as long as she gets the meds she needs. At the current dose of eye drops, the cost is about $75/month. We are attempting to wean her to once a day drops which would cut the expense even more.
In every other way she is a perfect and normal puppy! She is hysterically funny in her puppy antics and is just delightful! Molly gets the puppy zoomies at least once a day as any puppy would--tearing around the yard until she drops. Of course, she wants to chew on everything so careful attention is needed to make sure she gets directed to safe chew toys. She is very smart and already knows 'sit', 'leave it' and 'no'. Molly sleeps in a crate in the bedroom with the rest of us and sleeps soundly. She is just learning to walk on a leash--and loves to be the one holding it. She is curious about everything--a little afraid of some loud noises but we are exposing her to all of the normal household noise--blow dryer, vacuum cleaner, etc.
Molly will need a special home that is willing to give her the meds she will likely need for life. Aside from that commitment, Molly has no special needs. She doesn't need another dog in the home, she doesn't need a fence if you are willing to train her to stay close. As with all puppies, Molly will need obedience training so she can be a good citizen. Generally, puppies and small children are not a good mix as they are still learning not to chew on people and to control their exuberance around young ones.

Exciting news for Miss Molly! She has found her forever family! The M family knows all about daily regulation of meds and was not the least bit daunted by the special needs of this precious pup. It is what rescue is all about. Molly has already wormed her way into their hearts and she is a lucky girl to have been found by them! Live long, Miss Molly!
As you can see, Miss Molly is pretty cold! Ah but we all love Minnesota! Actually today it got up to 3 above and she could tolerate being outside to tear around and get her business done. She will struggle to be house trained with her diabetes insipidus. Towards the time when she is due for her meds again, she needs to go out about every 20-30 minutes and has accidents when I miss it. Hopefully that will improve when she is full grown and has a normal sized bladder. Tonight she got a bath because she is meeting a family in the morning and we want her to smell good.

Molly is just a pistol! She has won over my grouchy senior and now they are best buds. Scout wrestles and plays tug with her, lets her crawl all over and in general tolerates an unmannered puppy. My males are a little less tolerant so Molly is learning doggie language from them :)
She is very curious as puppies are--to the detriment of their own safety. We certainly would hate for her to learn any lessons the painful way so when we can't watch her, she is nearby in her crate. A few minor vocal protests and she snuggles in for a little nap. Speaking of vocalizations, Molly has the cutest little noises. When she yawns in the morning, there is a squeal at the end. And when she is rumpling up her blankets to get them just right for the nights sleep, she whines and growls at them. It really is too adorable!!
Molly has loads of puppy energy so as long as she isn't holding up her paws from the cold, she is outside frequently to tear around the back yard. She had a bath tonight and did great--well, she was preoccupied with finding the little treats in the tub while I was scrubbing.
We tried decreasing her eye drops to once a day and the accidents started right away. Now we are trying to get back to where we were a week ago with being able to keep her crate dry and not have accidents. She'll get there!
