Lucky Florence has struck gold! She has been by adopted by the G family. She has a home on a lake, plenty of dog beds available, and even in-floor heating. Besides a human mom and dad, this lucky girl has a younger dog brother to help her continue to learn the ropes. Her family understands that Flo is on a journey as she builds up her confidence and resilience. She couldn't have asked for a better home!

Florence has come a long way since our last update. With shy, scared dogs, progress comes in small increments, but each is a “big deal” to her RAGOM Foster Mom and Dad. It’s now become standard practice that she and her brothers spend their nap times on one of the dog beds in our living room.
Florence still has her kennel to go to if she feels scared or stressed but, most often, she can be found snoozing with her brothers. None of the dogs is possessive of any one bed, but rather they seem to be happy to move from one to another.
Another sign of Flo’s growing self-confidence is that she is becoming more and more a part of our three-dog pack. She will join her brothers to investigate sounds and smells and, most importantly, will join them to soak up attention from us!
The other positive that we see is in her posture while she sleeps. Now we see her stretched out and totally relaxed when she is napping. Several times we’ve had to wake her up because we were going out for a walk. It is so heartwarming to see these changes.
Slowly, but surely, good things are happening for Flo. She is eating all her food at every meal (we’re trying to put an additional 4 lbs. on her slim frame). She has never had an accident in the house. She is walking better every day with just her regular collar. In short, she is a joy to foster and we love seeing her grow in confidence.

Florence (or Flo for short) has had a busy week. As she is settling in, we’re starting to see this little girl’s personality emerge.
Little is the right word! We went to the vet where she weighed in at 44 lbs. Dr. Jean thought that she might be a bit underweight, but not by much. She is thinking that 48 lbs. would be a good target weight for her – she’s a petite girl. As we expected, she was pretty scared at first at the clinic.
Her big foster brother Tank came with her for support. She found a corner of the examining room and hunkered down but soon, after pets and many soothing words, she began to interact more. By the end of the visit she was taking treats (as long as they were placed on the floor in front of her). Here she is when we first went into the exam room.
The medical news was positive. She is in good health – strong heart, clear lungs, healthy eyes. She has a few chunks of wax deep inside her ears that we are going to be treating with ear drops. We’ll bring her back in two weeks to recheck and they’ll also recheck her teeth.
Each day we can see her gaining confidence. She spends more and more time outside of her kennel and is beginning to interact with her foster brothers.
She now spends family time lying on her dog bed in the living room. It is so much fun watching her become a part of our pack.
She even shared her kennel with our resident, Sooner, when they both wanted to get as far away as they could from our noisy vacuum cleaner!
Here are a few of the things we’ve learned about Flo this week:
- She is completely house trained.
- She is walking much better on leash (only pulling if she is scared by an unexpected noise).
- She is now taking treats from us (not yet from our hands, but is getting there).
- She kennels up on command. We give her free roam in the house at night (she sleeps either on a dog bed or in her kennel with the door open).
- She’s been good with free roam when we’ve been gone for an hour or so. For longer absences we have been kenneling her with her peanut butter filled Kong (which she loves).
- She loves doggy daycare. She has now been to daycare twice (with one of her foster brothers) and had a great time with all of the dogs in her pack there.
- She rode nicely in the car on her trips to daycare and to the Vet. We are giving her 25 mg of Benadryl an hour before the car ride and she has been fine.
Flo will need a confident dog in her forever home to help her learn the ropes and for companionship. She is coming out of her shell every day but we know that it will be a journey. Although she would enjoy a fenced yard, it isn’t necessary as long as you are in a position to take her on walks or supervise her on a tie-out.
We have been walking with her for two miles per day and are slowly increasing the distance. If you think that Flo might be just the right dog for your family, we’d love to talk to you more about her.

Ms. Florence has changed foster homes since we last updated her website. We are thrilled to have her with us. Many years ago, we were fortunate to be able to foster her momma – Dakota 13-138.
Flo reminds us so much of her. She is scared of many things but she is slowly, slowly getting braver. Her curiosity about the world is going to eventually trump her fears. We just need to give her time to adjust.
We’ve done a lot of walking since Flo joined our family. She has done a good job. She still pulls a little but this is getting better as she walks more.
We’ve changed her requirements from “physical fence required” to “physical fence optional”. While a fenced yard would be a bonus, she will do fine with a family committed to frequent walks and supervised tie-outs.
We’re still learning about this sweet girl, as she has been with us less than two weeks. Flo will be visiting our Vet this week to get weighed and to check on her ears for infections. Foster brother Tank is going to ride along to give her moral support.
She is also going to doggy daycare with her other foster brother – Sooner – on Tuesday. We’ll let you know how she does with both adventures.
We’re already figuring out that Flo is very observant and smart as a whip. She has watched her foster brothers “sit” at the front door while we are hooking them up to their leashes prior to our walks. She has now worked up her courage to scurry to the front door and, when she sees us get her leash, she now “sits” too!
One last thing. We’ve experimented a bit using her name. Her previous foster mom was using the name Katy in place of Florence. We’ve settled on calling her “Flo” for short. She seems to respond best to that name of any of the three options.
Flo has begun what will be a long journey to learn what the Golden Life is all about. Her forever family will be one who is prepared to walk with her, at her pace, down that path. We need to learn a lot more about her and we will try to update this site often to let you know what we’re finding out.

A quick little update on our Katy peanut (Florence). She is progressing each day and showing more of herself.
We have now heard her bark! Saying, "Hello, I am here." She will also chime in with the other two (nuts) when they are saying hello to all the dogs and their walkers as they go by. Not much barking, just a little.
She does enjoy it outside when the sun is warm and we just hang outside. She showed great interest in my doves I feed! She actually nabbed one, oh so gently, and when I came to intervene, she dropped the bird.
She found out that dog bones with peanut butter inside are yummy! She has even gathered up more “bones, hard rubber toys” to her little den, too.
At night she sneaks out of her crate and crashes on the large dog bed outside our bedroom. We will slowly try to have her in with the rest of us eventually. I am still allowed to give her kisses on her nose, which I love to do. That’s all for now... until next time...
Please consider SPONSORING Katy or making a donation to RAGOM — any help is greatly appreciated! Katy will continue making her baby steps and waiting for the great forever home to be found!

Since our last update, Florence/Katy has now been spayed. She did well and has recovered just fine. It's always so good to have “this procedure” behind us. No more breeding babies.
She is making progress getting used to this “new life.” She has adapted very well to all the new noises in and outside. She is now going in and out potty just fine, even exploring the yard and seeing what new smells there are and following the other two resident dogs around.
She has a pretty good appetite and is currently fed in her crate, door open, very close to Bridger and Eddie, our resident dogs. She's never had any accidents whatsoever.
Florence/Katy really loves cheese (we used the cubed type). A great reward for her. She remains very nervous riding in the car…..all in good time.
A happy note is that she is venturing out of her crate, seeing what is going on and coming a little more out of her shell. We are being very patient so she can build up a little more self-esteem day by day. The baby steps with these goldens is so rewarding to experience and watch.
Katy is such a “little-one” and so darn cute! We will be trying to put a more weight on her. Perhaps around 10# or so.
We are having one more trip to the groomer next week to get even more smell and coat off her. She is sure going to make some lucky family very happy with her beautiful eyes/face and a wonderful personality which is evolving each day!

Florence/Katy is a very petite, dark red retired breeding girl. Katy remains shy yet. This will take time and patience. She will need a quieter home. No small children. She still enjoys the safety of her crate which she probably will for some time yet. She will need a lot of loving, patience and guidance to learn her new world! Her personality is wonderful, and what a little dolly!
