Are you looking for a young, petite male with a gentle, fun temperament?   Monty is 1 year old (will turn 2 in February or March) very handsome, light colored boy.  He came into a sister GR rescue as a puppy with his mom and littermates.  Mom looks just like him.  Dad is anybody’s guess.   He hasn’t visited the vet yet, but we’re guessing his weight at about 45 pounds.  He’s got the best temperament and gets along well with all people and dogs.  Cats are an unknown.
 
Monty was adopted out as a puppy to a family with small children.  He was very gentle with the small children and did not show any aggression.   In the house he’s a pretty calm dog for his age.  Outside, he enjoys running and chasing with the other dogs.  Monty met the five dogs in his foster home with no problems.
 
Monty has lived outside in a fenced in backyard for the past 1-1/2 years and slept in the basement in a kennel.  He is very quickly learning that sleeping in a bed or cuddling on the couch are pretty nice.  He doesn’t  automatically jump up and we have to invite and encourage him if we want him to join us on the furniture or in bed.  He is learning his housetraining.  I’ve caught him in the act a couple of times and rushed him outside.  He doesn’t know yet how to tell us that he needs to go outside, but he’ll learn quick.   Monty was neutered when he was a young pup and he squats to do his business.  This may not seem newsworthy or perhaps too much information, but the good news about this behavior is that he doesn’t mark on anything.
 
Monty has not yet attended obedience training and does not know any commands.  We are starting with “sit” having him sit for all petting and treats.  I’ve been hand feeding him and he learned really quick that he gets food when his butt is on the floor.   He is very food motivated and will be fun to train.  He now comes up to me, sits and looks at me – which definitely deserves some ear scratching and attention.  His brother, on the other hand, has been to multiple levels of obedience and agility training and knows a lot.  You can see pictures of the puppy litter and an update on Monty’s brother at http://www.grrnm.com/dogs/?p=150  As with children, young dogs develop into wonderful adults by going to school. 
 
Monty will fit into just about any home.  My criteria for his forever home will be someone dedicated to obedience training and teaching him to become all that he can be.   I’d love it if you are interested in training a dog for therapy work to visit children in hospitals.  I believe Monty would excel and he could bring so much happiness to sick, lonely kids.  It takes a special rescue dog to be safe with young children, and Monty is that special dog.
