Moses 05-196

Profile

7/10/05: Moses started his day in Wisconsin, then to Rochester, Pine Island, Minneapolis, and finally St. Cloud. Thank you to Barb and Connie for getting him to Minneapolis for me.

We arrived home and he and Reba hit it right off. Once inside the house he met Sam the cat...he looked at Sam, sniffed, wagged his tail and that was it. Outside we went for brushing, bathing, more brushing, cutting out mats, trimming nails and cleaning out ears. I can't even begin to tell you how nasty his right ear is :( By the time we were done with all of this he was out for the count....fell on the towels in the garage and that was it. Eventually we checked out the back yard and then it was dinner time. I thought he might be a gulper....but I had to feed him a bit from my hand, finally he decided it was ok to eat. No food guarding at all. What a sweet boy he is. He did feel that my daughter should share her pizza....he finally got the hint it wasn't going to happen. Moses went off to explore a bit, found a chew bone, brought it down to the basement by Reba and me, eventually found that under the desk was a great place to hang out, and finally napped yet again.

We are going out to do some brushing now that he's dried off. He is very good natured, but needs some help in the sit, stay, down and walking department....but since he was tied up he hasn't had much chance to hone his skills. He pulled with his collar so put a GL on him and though he doesn't like it, he walks nicer. We will find out if he likes tennis balls or not, as my favorite 5 year old girl from next door is here to check on the new dog :)

More later in the week as we get better acquainted.

Last night I received a call from one of my adoptive moms. She and her husband adopted Moses on August 1st. I had been reticent about it, as they lived on the 18th floor of a condo in downtown St. Paul. But all else fit about them. He went home with them and started to live his Golden life of long walks, and weekends at the lake....swimming under water :) They moved into a 3 bedroom townhouse and he loved it.

Sue called, not to ask me to babysit during the upcoming wedding at the end of October, but to tell me Moses had cancer - it came on very fast and there was no hope. We both cried and talked about how they only had him for 70 days and how much they loved him and I was worried about how her special needs brother would deal with it, as he loved Mo and Mo slept by him when they took him on weekends to the lake. We had kept in touch and no matter what Mo did or didn't do, he was so loved and their pain is so deep. I could only say that it was meant to be that he would spend his last days living such a wonderful life with a family that loved him so much.

Then we talked about how he used to have to greet me at the door with something....sock, shoe, sandal, toy...didn't matter. Just so happy to see you. And how he loved to sleep on the bed with his head on the pillow, or with head under something...bed, desk, pillow, you name it. His other favorite thing to do was gather all the toys and bring them to the family room and put them under the coffee table near him. He was one of the sweetest, most gentle, loving souls I've ever met and he had the best time of his life the short time he was with Cliff, Sue and Joe.

He crossed the Rainbow Bridge today.....and I know that as much as I'm bawling now, it can't compare with what his family is feeling. They waited a good 18 months after their last dog passed, and Sue said maybe someday down the line, when they are ready, they will come to RAGOM again. This is my first furr butt to have cross....since I started doing this in May....which seems like a hundred years ago. I know there's nothing anyone can do, but I feel so helpless, angry and sad....he deserved to enjoy his Golden Life so much longer....he had spent most of his time tied up.

Hi Joyce -

Cliff had just gotten me a new digital camera and I used it for the first time on Sunday. So I did get a few pictures of Moses. Hope you enjoy them. It's Tuesday evening and we just got back from the animal hospital. Moses is in heaven now, running and playing. I should say swimming and chasing tennis balls. Probably greeting everyone with something in his mouth. Moses is such a Good Boy! We are going to take his ashes and bury them at the lake at the top of hill were he liked to sit looking over that big swimming hole.

The short time that we had him he brought us so much joy. He would make us laugh. He loved to play tug-of-war, especially with Cliff - they were exausted when they were through. In the evening I would get his brush and he would come and plop right down with his belly up to be brushed. He loved his daily walks. He sure loved to smell and chase those darn squirrels on our walks. He could never catch one because he had me to drag behind him. And of course when he was at the lake, the squirrels would hide. Last weekend Cliff and Moses went up to the lake to close it down and of course he had to go swimming in the cold water. And always just before we would get in the car to come home, Moses had to go for one last dip. The backseat was always wet.

Joyce, I want to say thank you for letting us adopt Moses. We loved that Big Boy. He was wonderful and we will miss him dearly. Sorry I was ramblin' on, but there is just so much to say about that loveable guy Moses.

Hi, this is Moses' foster mom writing, as he's sacked out under the desk, so figured I'd best do it and get the pictures in.

The last week I have learned more about our sweet boy. He loves sleeping in bed with you as long as he can have his head on a pillow. I discovered that coffee cake, wrapped in tin foil in the middle of the counter is not safe from him....he was delicate about it as my plate didn't break and he didn't eat the tin foil! He loves to collect the toys, bring them down to the family room and put them under the coffee table - guess that's his "place" to keep stuff. He's still into grabbing whatever is in reach to bring to you to welcome you home. He gives it up....it being a shoe, sandal, towel, toy etc. He's so thoughtful.

He loves the pool and so I know he'll love the lake. He is also playing with Reba a bit more....some ways more proper than others, if you get my drift....he's just so excited. When we go to the door to go out he knows he has to sit. Once in a while he'll get excited (again) and jump up on the door, but quickly realizes he isn't getting out the door with that kind of behavior.

He's very much a velcro dog....he will follow whomever, wherever, whenever. When moving furniture it gets a bit tricky. I also discovered if you take him for a good walk/trot in the cool of evening he is content to come home and not try to run off. So a bit more exercise should help break him of wanting to run off, rope or not :) He is truly a sweet boy, very loving and gentle....never any mouthing. We are working on "giving" up the ball or toy or whatever he's supposed to "give". He responds more quickly to my husband's deep voice when giving him a command.

He's gotten finicky about his eating, so I am putting low sodium chicken broth on his food. There are days he doesn't even eat 3 cups of food and I think it's due to the hot weather and probably the chance that dry food was put out and left for him to eat when he wanted....grazing, as it were. We eat a.m. and p.m. and he gets 10 minutes to eat and then it's picked up. If he's hungry he'll eat and if not there's always the next meal.

He's ready for a loving forever home. He'll need an obedience class to help with the commands and to help curb his wanting to take off. If he ever knew commands such as come, sit, stay etc., they have long been forgotten, but once you meet this boy and look into his big brown eyes....you just melt. So come on, people, it's summer and a great time to add a new family member. You get to be outside, playing, swimming, walking etc., and just getting acquainted - so for an appointment to meet this sweet boy, email PlacementatRagom [dot] org. And remember, age is just a number.....and 5 isn't that old :)

Wednesday, July 13, 2005

Hi, Moses here. Well, been in St. Cloud for about 4 days now. The resident 12 year old keeps nudging me like she wants to play....what's up with Granny? I'm more into chasing the ball...not always bringing it back...but hey, there's a lot of new smells to check out. I am a good boy in the house and have had free roaming rights since my 2nd day here. The cats are cool, though Sedwick waits til I come to say hi and then takes off! Apparently chewing the "fuzz" off tennis balls is not allowed, so have been given tug toys and balls to chew on. I have NOT chewed on anything inappropriate, had any accidents, or gotten into the garbage. I do like to beg for table food....so they keep telling me to lay down....what does that mean? I love being out with the family and seeing all the sights and sounds, and there are so many birds to watch. I still follow my foster mom around and like to sit under the desk when she is on the computer. I have found that if I whine and wag my tail under the desk she will ask me if I need to go out.......like hello, yes let's go!!!

One of my favorite things to do is move the shower curtain and climb in the bathtub....no special reason...then climb out. I haven't done this while any family members are in there :) My family thinks it's so funny to watch me try and get my tail.....it's a bit short for my body, not sure what happened there, but it's difficult to be a big boy and try to get around to the tail. Sometimes I just lay down and go for it.

My foster mom thinks I have what she calls "male selective hearing".......something about ignoring her until I'm ready to listen. In the house I pretty much come when called, but outside I am not inclined to run right to you. I get so excited when we are going out I sometimes jump up on the door, so now I have to sit and wait til I'm told I can go out. We are doing something called "learning manners".....like sit, stay, down, come, etc. I'm really kind of an independent kinda guy, so this is a little wearing at times. But overall I want to please cuz then I get all these hugs and kisses and my mom gets so excited, so guess "learning manners" isn't too bad.

I have been allowed to run "free"....if you call dragging a 50' rope behind you "free"....but haven't quite figured out the rules about not going beyond the grass into the road or back into the field....which of course is where all the fun is. But I do enjoy a good game of tug and chasing balls. I don't even flinch when anyone tugs my ears, or pulls on my coat or tail.....so I would be good around kids, I think. I go to the vet tomorrow to get updated on all my shots and get micro chipped, so will be ready for anyone looking for a guy that is handsome, loving, willing to learn and looking for that forever home and family to live the Golden life with. If you think you'd like to meet me, please contact PlacementatRagom [dot] org.

Hey, stay cool and we'll send some pics in tonight.....so be watching. Mo
