3/18/07: This beautiful boy was surrendered to RAGOM from a city impound; while there he made friends with the three puppies and had mixed feelings about the cats. Moses is about four years old and is one bundle of energy. He looks like a little fluffy brown/golden bear (OK, not so little). He has been with me six days and has wormed his way into my heart. This boy seems so large (weighed in at 75 lbs and the vet would like to see him at 80 and then reevaluate); however when he and resident Jackson were able to hang out together I realized he is smaller than Jackson, although much broader and outweighs him by 8 lbs.

Moses rides in the car well, has been OK while crated. However, he lets you know he is not happy by his whimpering and whining. He and the resident boy Jackson really get along well together. He does not like baby gates and has managed to get through two different types. Hard to manage on a leash; however once I got a Gentle Leader to fit him he is great--a fabulous walking partner and keeps a good pace. Appeared he had some experience with a Gentle Leader. Knows some basic commands, needs encouragement to use what he knows.

We visited the vet this week. Moses has a very bad ear infection. He was put on an antibiotic and something for the swelling. He will return to the vet this week, who hopes to be able to see into his ear to get a better feel for what is going on. The heartworm test was positive; they did a second one and it was inconclusive. They have sent his blood to a lab and we are awaiting the results. He cannot be neutered until this issue is resolved and if positive, treated. Moses was a champ at the vet and takes his medications well. While at impound they said he ate well, though he has not had much of an appetite the last few days. I wonder if it may be med related. I have hand fed him and tried to jazz up his food. He loves his food with a little plain yogurt; I give his meds the same way.

This morning we had quite an adventure. I let Jackson and Moses out in the fenced yard as I have done before. I go in to do some laundry and hear someone come in by the back entry. My neighbor is standing there with Jackson and says he was walking down the street. Oh no, where is Moses? He graciously agrees to help me search and we head out and split up. After walking some time I hear a lot of dog commotion in an alley. I walk down and see several dogs in fenced yards--all barking up a storm. I keep walking and observe a fluffy “brown bear” well on his way to climbing out of an almost 6-ft.-high dog run. There is a man standing there trying to push him back down. I walk over and strike up a conversation. Learned this dog was hanging out by their dog and he kenneled it, thinking it looked like his neighbor’s dog. After identifying Moses by his shaved ear and sore, we head home, with Moses walking happily beside me.

Will write again after our vet appointment.
