12/6/05: Two wonderful little puppies came to stay with me this weekend. They are Ted (Teddy) and Murray and they were "left over" from a litter in Rochester by a full-bred Golden Retriever Mom and the neighbor Chocolate Lab Dad - oops! They are 6 1/2 weeks old and just the sweetest little boys. They have been well socialized with other dogs so far because they had two moms down in Rochester; their 1 year old birth mom and the old lady of the roost, a 12 year old Golden girl. They took to my resident Golden, Daisy, right away and have even had fun playing with our friend's Border Collie, Feeney, who came over to visit last night.

Ted is named after Ted Baxter (Mary Tyler Moore Show) because he seemed a little clumsy and gullible on his first night in his new foster home. However, he has since proven to be the smarter one when it comes to paper training. He is a love and is the more dependent of the two. He's a bit of a cry-baby when he doesn't get what he wants right away, and will cry and look at me like "Why can't I come in my pen while you are changing the paper, can't you see how cute I am?". But he stops crying immediately once I give him a little pat on the head. Since the weather is so cold, we are working on paper training this week before we attempt outdoor potty training. They are both still making mistakes, but they have made great progress in just the few days they've been here.

Murray is named after Murray Slaughter because he seemed smarter and more independent right off the bat. He is just fine playing by himself and sometimes seems to get impatient with Teddy when he bumbles around while Murray has a special toy or when Teddy pounces on him in the middle of a nap. They are both all about chewing right now - which is totally normal for puppies - and we are working on being gentle when chewing on humans. Sometimes they get so excited while they're playing that they forget and chomp down too hard on foster mommy's fingers. Just a loud "Ouch!" stops their jaws mid-bite and they immediately change to puppy kisses and look at me like "I'm so sorry, Mommy! I didn't mean to hurt you."

They are still sleeping quite a bit during the day because they are so young. And the nights are going very smoothly. They have slept through all three nights that they've been here without a peep. Yesterday morning, they decided that wake-up time was 6:15 AM after having a little trouble falling asleep the night before, but the other nights were quiet from lights-out (leaving a night-light on, of course) until I came down to let them out of their pen around 7:30. The other two mornings they just woke up and started playing by themselves instead of crying to be let out. They are such good boys!

Here are some pictures of them napping on Daisy's dog bed in the living room (at least Ted is napping, Murray caught me sneaking up with the camera) and one of Murray playing with Daisy on his first night here.

These sweet boys will be available for adoption as of December 14th when they will be 8 weeks old. We'll continue to work on potty training, gentle chewing, and socializing so they are all ready to go to their new forever homes and make wonderful additions to their new families.

Tomorrow our Murray will be six months old! We fell in love with a pic of Murray on the Ragom site and adopted him on January 11. He is a golden/lab mix and a wonderful addition to our family. We are retirees living on a lake in the Brainerd lakes area. We love living in the woods and is seems Murray does too. The day the ice went out Murray jumped in the lake by himself and had his first swim!!! Clumsy, but effective. He loves retrieving balls on land and lake. We've graduated from obedience school and now have daily well-"heel"ed walks. He is a cuddly playful puppy and we love him very much. We are very thankful for the opportunity to provide a home for this wonderful guy. Thanks also to Joyce for giving us the okay to adopt and to Murray's foster mom, Joy, for giving Murray such a wonderful infancy and allowing us to take him home.

Happy Birthday! Murray and Teddy just turned 8 weeks old! That means they are ready to go to their forever homes. These puppies have grown up so much in the past two weeks. They are doing great with their paper training and we've even started working on outdoor potty training. Since the weather has warmed up, they have been going outside to potty several times a day and they LOVE playing in the snow with their foster mom-dog, Daisy. There's a picture below of the whole clan curled up for a nap after a fun play session. Aren't they just the cutest bunch of Goldens you've ever seen?

Teddy is getting so big! He loves to play under furniture and has been teasing Murray into playing and then running under the big chair in the living room, but he's getting so big, he gets stuck when he tries to come out. I've added a picture below of when he got stuck under the automan and just fell asleep there. So cute! He's still a big baby, though. He cries the most to be let out of the pen when they wake up and he cries if he ever finds himself alone in a room. He's so funny; he doesn't run around and look for anybody, he just sits in the middle of the room crying until someone comes back. It doesn't matter who it is; it could be me, my resident dog Daisy, or Murray. He just doesn't want to be alone. I think Teddy would do best in a home with another dog. He needs the comfort of another being in order for him to be happy.

Murray is more independent than Teddy. He doesn't like being alone for very long either, but can tolerate a little quiet time on his own every once in awhile. Though I suspect he just needs a break from Teddy sometimes. There's another picture below of Murray taking a quick break from playing with Ted. Murray is quite a bit smaller than Teddy, has a smaller appetite, and is more calm. He just seems to be more thoughtful. I think he's going to be a very smart dog! Though probably on the small side for a Golden.

They have a great time playing with elementary school-aged children, though we still have some work to do on being gentle when chewing on humans. I think they would do well in a home with older children, but not toddlers or babies. They're still very young, so they demand a lot of attention, but it's worth every minute because they are the sweetest boys and they just want to have fun!

They went to the vet last week because Murray had a little sore on his neck, caused by some rough play with one of his litter-mates, that was causing him to cry whenever he scratched his collar, poor boy! He got some topical medicine and we removed his collar so he is healing up really well. He also tested positive for Giardia, so we treated all the dogs, including my Daisy, for three days and hopefully have knocked that out. They'll have to be re-tested when they go in for their next round of shots, but the vet assured me that Giardia is really common in puppies (and can be hard to knock out completely) but is nothing to worry about once it is treated. They had their last de-worming pills today so they are completely up-to-date and are ready to find their forever homes.

There's still time to bring one of these wonderful boys home in time for Christmas so please contact placementatragom [dot] org if you are interested in meeting Ted or Murray.
