Sweet Mya made it all the way to Western South Dakota, last Sunday, from the Bismarck, ND puppy mill, thanks to a wonderful group of RAGOM volunteers.  She traveled here via Hastings, MN.  Mya, and her mill mate, Maizy (07-190), traveled over 1,000 miles to find themselves a soft bed in a loving foster home.  I would guess that they traveled further than any of the other 81 dogs.  They are also likely among the oldest.   It took two days of my husband carrying them out to the yard and back into the house before the  willingly got up and walked in and out on their own.  After two days, Mya finally ate and on day three did her 'business' for the first time since arriving, so we were able to test for parasites. We're happy to report that not only is she free of parasites; she is heartworm negative and does not appear to be pregnant.  Mya will be spayed right after Easter, and she is anxious to put her puppy producing days behind her.  Mya appears to be one of the darkest colored dogs from the Bismarck puppy mill - a beautiful mahogany red and she also might be one of the chunkiest, as she weighed 82 lbs. at her vet appointment yesterday.  Mya has a beautiful coat with lovely gold highlights, very pretty feathering, thick legs and big feet.  Although she was bathed at the Animal Ark last Saturday, I decided she deserved a little freshening up so she and Maizy both had a shower this morning.  She lay on her belly as I scrubbed and rubbed and although she didn't love it, she was a very good girl.

It will take some time for this sweet 6-year-old Puppy Mill girl to find her comfort zone.  Like all the ND dogs, her world has completely changed and she hasn't quite realized yet that it is for the better. Of all the new things to experience, people and human touch are the biggest and scariest for Mya at the moment.  Mya will venture forward to meet our touch with her nose and she even will offer a gentle lick and wag of her tail.  We think she appreciates being here.

Mya is HOME!  She made a long journey to Minnesota last weekend where she had a date to meet a very special woman with a kind and loving heart. She met Kim S., her resident Golden boy, Mac as well as Kim's adult daughter and several neighborhood friends. Everyone loved Mya.  We took a walk around their beautiful neighborhood to find that Mac is Mr. Popular - and everyone greeted us with a similar statement "is this Mya?".  It seems everyone knew about Mya's coming to visit and they were all very gentle, as they knew her history.  As a foster Mom, it is heartwarming to see your foster dog so lovingly welcomed and appreciated.  After just a short time, we all knew that Mya had had found her forever home and family. She has a wonderful extended family with the neighbors too.

Mya will forever be in the hearts of her South Dakota foster family.  She brought us such joy and inspiration during her time in our home. We will always love you, Mya. It is with pleasure that I share these photo's of Mya's new beginning in her forever home!

We recently discovered that Mya has a new sponsor and we would like to thank Irene H. for her loving support. The trust Mya is building in her foster home is helping prepare her for her forever life with her forever family.  Her medical care and healing has been made possible by you, Irene as well as Sara, Ham, Sam & Carys.  Thank you all for being on Mya's team.  She couldn't do any of this without you!

Mya is amazing.  Three weeks ago, she was nervous, shy and would hide in her nest, but now she is gregarious and more outgoing and she eagerly meets us at the door along with our dogs when we come home from work.  She responds to her name, comes when called, loves her meals, especially when served in bed, and has found her calling by ridding our home of the evil Mailman!!! Okay, so she guts soft toys - but who cares.  This is her first experience with toys and she enjoys them - Good Girl Mya!  She also loves nylabones and she even found an old Kong in the livingroom toy basket and she LOVES it.

Mya has healed completely from her spay and her beautiful clean teeth glisten.  The biopsy report came back negative for anything bad - it just confirmed, like Maizy's (07-190) that her uterus was just overused and her ovaries were scarred and dried up.  All of that is behind Mya and it is quite obvious that she feels terrific now.  She trots and runs in the yard - with her head held high.  I will try to get a photo of her, it truly is a beautiful site to see.

Mya enjoys her walks and is starting to show her true personality.  She walks great on a regular leash, content to walk just a few paces behind and is getting used to all the sights and sounds around her.  Just this morning, she proved to me that sudden strange noises are no longer terrifying, but curious.  Our neighbors are having their kitchen remodeled and the workmen have all their tools and saws in the driveway.  While we were out in the yard, the tile guy fired up his wet saw and Mya barely flinched. She walked to the fence to investigate, while wagging her tail.  All signs that she enjoys her new world and that she is ready to begin looking for her forever family.

Mya would like to have a home and family who will continue to teach her all about the world around her. Although she has met our neighbors 4 year old Grandson, I feel older children would be best for Mya.  She will need at least one resident dog to help teach her all the things that dogs know and a fenced yard is a must.

If you think Mya might be "the one" for you, please contact placementatragom [dot] org and we'll see about a date with Mya.

First and foremost, Mya and her foster family would like to say a special thank you to her sponsors; Sara, Ham, Sam &
Carys.  We can't tell you how wonderful you make us feel knowing you are in Mya's corner.  Mya will be sending you a "personal" thank you real soon.

Mya is home tonight from her stay in the hospital following her spay surgery and dental cleaning, yesterday.   After a small bite to eat, she immediately found her favorite spot, by the back door and quickly fell into a deep and contented sleep.

There's that saying that goes "today is the first day of the rest of your life" and in Mya's case, that phrase couldn't be more fitting.  During her spay surgery yesterday; our vet discovered a war zone.  Dr. Susan found that Mya has / had Pyometra, which is an infection in the uterus and left untreated the Pyometra would likely have killed Mya. RAGOM truly saved her life  for if it weren't for RAGOM, and her special sponsor family, her fate would have been sealed at the puppy mill in North Dakota.

Dr. Susan also found that Mya's uterus was very scarred. Her ovaries looked suspicious, so we're awaiting a biopsy report.  Dr. Susan estimates that Mya has had a minimum of 10 pregnancies, and likely more.  She said it is quite obvious that she was never allowed a break between pregnancies which resulted in the severe scarring to her uterus. But all of that is behind her, for her future looks bright and she has only good things to look forward to.

We'll update in a few days to let you know how Mya is doing, so stay tuned.
