Neville 05-294

Profile

9/17/05: Neville is 4-5 year old who happens to be prematurely grey (per his RAGOM vet). He's fully house trained, neutered, up to date on vaccinations and a dog who someone must be sorely missing. His vet's conclusion is that he has either Husky or Samoyed ancestry mixed in with his primary Golden Retreiver breed.

Neville was found in southern Minnesota and retained by an impound who found him so sweet and loving that they just couldn't end his time at the end of 5 business days. He tolerated the antics of two 6 month old puppies on the ride home, and gets along marvelously with the resident three here, as well as the cat who pretty much keeps to himself. He's a very mellow and gentle fellow who'll be a great additional member of the family!

Nevi's lab work showed him to be heartworm negative as of November 11th. Yea! As a result, Nevi was finally able to have the dental that was delayed during the HW treatment. He was scheduled for a cleaning and care of an abscess, but as it turned out, three broken/cracked teeth were extracted as well. Our little guy was pretty tender for the first several days after the procedure, but has bounced back to his happy self minus the toothache! He's to be on soft food through 11/29, and can then return to his regular dry kibble diet.

We've told Nevi that we love him, talked about life in the bigger world, and assured him that he can call collect any time! With that in his heart, he's on his way to Zoom's home to transition from ours as foster care while ill and recovering; to an active foster home as a healty fit dog ready to roll towards his new life and forever home! Next up-date will be from Zoom!

Nevi has a HW follow up on November 10th. We're expecting good news. He seems to like to be the one to introduce himself to people he doesn't yet know, and the vet office staff is good at recognizing that! He likes to sort of get the 'lay of the land' settled in his mind before venturing forward emotionally. Nevi's all about trust and trusting; about determining that the new people he's meeting and the situation he's entering are trust worthy! He's a loving an loyal companion.

It's possibly best that Nevi join a family w/o young children as he's a sort of 'no nonsense' guy. I doubt that he's been exposed to the heightened levels of excitement, activity, and sometimes volume that can accompany being part of a young families household! He's a calm, mellow, and loving guy!

This last week has been extra busy, so a friend has been letting the canine crew here out for potty and exercise breaks. Although a little shy at first, Nevi is now welcoming that friend with a smile and a kiss! (If you haven't seen a dog's smile, you could mis interpret it as a lifting of lips, but once you know the difference, you'll always recognize that happy face!)

Nevi adores going on leash walks, the more the merrier! He's a zigzag style walker checking things out on his way down the path, yet he doesn't pull overly excitedly on the lead. I think he'd appreciate an off leash dog park experience with his new family - once he's bonded to them to assure his recall when hearing his name! Some times calling a name at a dog park is like calling a child’s name at a play park - they have to want to hear you!

Nevi is a little too loving towards cats, he wants to kiss and smell and wash and carry them, so he will be looking for a no cat family :)

Neville's had a social week! He came along on a RAGOM Home Visit making friends with a 17 year old resident Yorkie named Cappy; and he met Red's family (siblings Sky and Molly, as well as 'mom') and enjoyed the freedom of a little running around! (Nevi's still on post HW treatment instructions which curtail his opportunities for physical exertion) After playing with Red, Sky and Molly, we made a social call on a vet friend in the neighborhood who has several cats free roaming the lobby (as well as 7 cats and 2 dogs brought up from the Gulf as post hurricane rescues).

Today, for the first time, NEVI PLAYED!!!

During these 12 days he's been a RAGOM dog, Neville's been introduced to a totally unknown environment and various strangers since arriving in foster care. He's been poked, pricked, weighed, and treated for being heartworm positive, and spent two days back to back being boarded at the vet clinic as part of his care.

Nevi's been living with an abscessed tooth which was scheduled for remedy prior to the HW+ diagnosis and had to be rescheduled for after his October 18 'all clear' post HW treatment date; he's been 'irregular', and he had an upset tummy for several days. Neville has made it through each of these trying days with conduct that becomes a gentleman, (which he definitely is!).

Today, day 12, Neville decided to let us know that yes, he does like tennis balls, and yes, that big tug rope will be lots of fun when his mandatory 'quite time' recovery is up. Today, for the first time, NEVI PLAYED!!!

Our little Nevy was found to have HW positive lab results, so tomorrow he undergoes treatment #1, which will be followed by treatment #2 at a later date. Happily his heart has not been affected and his blood work shows him to be healthy, so I'll take that as the good news in Nevy's day!

He weighs in at 63 pounds and has been slimming, not by dieting, but by being brushed and combed. He was a bit behind in the grooming area, so we've been concentrating on his wonderful coat. He absolutely adores being brushed! He also loves to ride in the car and go for leash walks! He's a tender and gentle boy who will be a family favorite in his new home!
