Mia is an female 11 month old Golden Retriever and Border Collie Mix, although she looks more golden than collie.  Mia was surrendered to a Humane Society because she is high energy and was taking more time to care for than the family had.  Sometimes people don't realize how much time a puppy requires in that first year of life.  The surrendering family did say that Mia did not get along with another small breed dog but we haven't noticed that here.  One of her new foster sisters is a small terrier and so far they get along OK.

Mia came to our house and met our two resident senior girls.  Everyone gets along, although all Mia wants to do is play and our two older girls just want to sleep.  I think Mia would do well with another dog more age appropriate for her that will enjoy a high energy playmate.  Or Mia would be fine as an only dog.

Speaking of energy, Mia could run circles around the energizer bunny.  Imagine the energy of a puppy and add in border collie!  So Mia's new family needs to be active and expect to get Mia daily exercise.  Mia is reported to like children, although she should probably not go to a family with small kids because she may knock them over when she is bouncing around.  Mia loves to jump onto your lap and give out puppy kisses.

Mia is in need of some training, as all puppies are.  She likes to jump up on people and will go looking for treats on counters.  She is very athletic and may be great at agility training or fly ball.  She is food motivated and seems very eager to please people so should be very trainable.  She does know sit but that seems to be the extent of her tricks.  We have been working on house training for her and she has not had any accidents in the house.  Her new family will want to re-enforce that when bringing her home.

We have also been working on getting Mia used to a kennel.  She isn't always the best at going in, unless it involves a treat, but once in she does settle down and relax.  We haven't left her for more than an hour or two yet.

Mia needs a family that is active and has time to get her exercise and attention she needs (any runners out there looking for a partner?).  Mia also needs obedience training and we think she will be easy to train and learn quickly.  Kids are OK as long as they are old enough to handle Mia bouncing around without getting knocked over.  A fence is always a plus for dogs although not necessary for Mia's new family as long as you get her some long walks.  A younger dog as a playmate that loves to play and can keep up with Mia would be a bonus.  Mia could also be good as an only dog.

Quick update to let everyone know that Mia will be at Petco store this Saturday, 11/16/2013.  I am sure she is looking forward to meeting everyone.

Got a couple more pictures of Mia from a RAGOM foster training event.

Mia continues to adjust at our place.  She is doing really well with kennel training.  When we leave for a while, we just pick up a dog treat and she goes right into her kennel to get it.  We don't even have to give her the kennel command.  We have left her for up to 5 hours alone and she did fine.  Tends to give us a little whine at first but settles down and naps after that. Still working with her on not jumping on people.  And she figured out baby gates today.  When I am working at home, I have been putting a baby gate in my office doorway with Mia in my office with me.  That worked really well till today.  I was typing along and then heard this bark and growl.  I turned around and no Mia, she had jumped the baby gate.  Unfortunately my resident golden was sleeping in the hall just on the other side of the gate.  So when Mia jumped it, she landed right on our other dog, who didn't much appreciate the youngster doing that and told Mia that by snapping at her and chasing her into the other room.  I ran out and found Mia hiding under the dining room table.  No harm done fortunately.

Mia hasn't shown must interest in dog toys but she is interested in tennis balls, a true golden trait.  She found one in my office yesterday and entertained herself for about 15 minutes by tossing it in the air and bouncing on it.  We will have to get her outside to see how she fetches the ball when thrown.

I am going to try getting some pictures of her outside running.  She is so fast and graceful, it is really amazing to watch.  Hope I can get something other than a golden blur on the camera.
