Oliver 06-085

Profile

3/3/06: Oliver is a 5 month-old Golden Retriever (Mom) and Black Lab (father) mix. He came from the Hurricane Katrina area where he was found at a garbage dump. His mother, father and sibling were deceased. We were told that the Red Cross was feeding left over people food to Oliver and some other dogs at the dump. That's probably why he is in much better shape than I expected.

Oliver came to our house this past week. He is a very sweet puppy. Oliver visited the vet on Wednesday and was found to have demodectic mange. The vet gave us some ointment to put on the few spots on his face and we are to watch them to make sure they don't spread. This is a mange that is not spread from animal to animal so I don't have to worry about my dog or cats getting it.

A common skin disease of dogs, demodectic mange (canine demodecosis) is caused by the mite Demodex canis. This mite is found as a normal resident in the hair follicles of all dogs. Mites are naturally transmitted from nursing mothers to their puppies within the first few days of life. Signs of disease appear only when mites reproduce unchecked and occur in unnaturally high numbers.

Oliver also got his rabies shot and is being treated for roundworms and hookworms.

Oliver loves to carry around the stuffed squeaky toys. He usually has a pile of them wherever he lays down. When he comes to greet you he will almost always have a stuffed toy in his mouth. So far, Oliver has not had any accidents in the house, nor has he chewed anything that he shouldn't have. Oliver loves to sit quietly while you pet him. We trimmed his nails the first night and he just laid in my husband's lap while I did all four paws. What a super good boy he is. He sleeps in his crate at nigh,t at least until we see if he really is housebroken or not. I have left him for short periods gated in the kitchen and there have been no messes when I came home.

I think this puppy is one easy going guy and would love to have a family of his own. No longer will he have to worry about being left at a garbage dump to fend for himself. If you're an approved app and would like to meet Oliver, who looks like a Black Lab on the outside and has a Golden personality on the inside, email Placementatragom [dot] org. If you're not yet approved, please fill out an online application.

Greetings from the land of Oliver,

After learning of the ‘Happy Endings’ area on RAGOM’s website, how can I not tell you about mine! My name is Oliver, but some of you at RAGOM may remember me as Ollie. My furfriends and I all have middle names; nicknames that just seemed to stick, mine is ‘Boyo.’ Although one of the humans I live with occasionally calls me ‘Sir Barks Allot’ since I have fun barking at strangers when they go by sometimes.

I live with five roommates; three humans and two tailless Manx cats. There’s Mom (yep, I’m a Momma’s boy), Dad, Erin (my other favorite human) and then my cat friends, Henry and Nara. The cats are okay, but they have a mildly annoying habit of trying to play with ‘my tail’ or steal ‘my bed.’ I guess it’s like having two younger siblings (which I’m told they are), you like them MOST of the time. The exception comes when they lick my ears or face, and when they want to lay with me but won’t lay still. While I would never admit it to the cats, it is nice having their company. Someone to simply hang out with when everyone else is away.

I’m a lucky guy as I have free reign of the house and I love every minute of it! I have my own bed (most of the time), a box full of toys, the occasional extra biscuit, an array of balls that I ABSOLUTELY LOVE to play with and I carry one with me just about everywhere I go (I’m told I get that from my father’s side). Best of all, I have a family that loves me!! I’m told that I get a bit spoiled with all the extra’s and attention I get. For example, I have multiple collars in different colors that change with the holidays and seasons. I get the occasional foot rub when I ask nicely. I get the back seat of the car ALL to myself and you don’t have to ask me twice…I enjoy car rides every chance I get. Going for walks are great, and playing ball or Frisbee out in the yard is something I can’t get enough of. Erin says I’d play til I dropped if she let me; she’s probably right.

After my forever family adopted me I started to go to work with Mom every day and became the office mascot. Having multiple people to lean into for a scratch everyday is a hard life, but someone has to do it. I even managed to charm a number of people in the other suites in the building. One Christmas I even got a jacket of my own with the company logo on it. I was so proud of it and I love to strut around in it every winter. After the office moved I had to stay home during the day again, but that’s okay. I still get to go out and charm people and work it for every bit of attention I can get. For awhile I was even able to go to the nursing home to visit Grandma and all the other residents. Charmer, that’s me. I know how to make people smile. All it takes it is a couple paw shakes, a wag of the tail, some sad puppy dog eyes (which I’m told I know exactly how to use), add my laid back demeanor and voila, they are hooked! I’ve had several offers from other people who said they would re-adopt me, but I’m not going anywhere, I love my home.

It’s hard to believe that I have been with my family for six years now, it feels like forever! My life now, is completely different from the life I had at the garbage dump in Mississippi after Hurricane Katrina before RAGOM found me. That life is like a distant dream. My life is a miracle thanks to RAGOM and my wonderful foster Mom Denise. I don’t think I could ever thank you enough for all you’ve done for me, and judging by the smiles and hugs my family gives me, I know they feel the same. “Thank you RAGOM!!”

I can hear my ball calling so until next time,

Oliver Boyo H.

P.S. Here is a fun video of Oliver playing in the snow. It's from the winter of 2010 since we didn't get much snow last winter (Oliver was bummed).

A little something from my younger years.

Did I mention that I LOVE snow?! The more the merrier!!!

Henry was here first, but I don't know if I'll ever get
used to sharing my bed
.

Having a little St. Patrick's day fun with Erin.
The best part...we're not Irish!

I have a tendency to get 'a little' ball crazy at times.

This be me, all grown up and posing for the camera!
Life is good!!
