Oliver 07-438

Profile

7/9/07:  My dad was coming home from Alabama last night, and while driving on Interstate 70 through Missouri, he saw a crate fly through the air and hit the truck in front of him.  He stopped immediately, because the crate was full of Labrador Retriever puppies.  One puppy, who was on the side of the crate that struck the truck, died instantly.  The other pups were scattered all over the Interstate. Two semi-trucks blocked four lanes of traffic, and the truck drivers as well as others helped my dad gather up the remaining five puppies.  The pups were terrified, and were so young that they could hardly walk yet.  One of the pups (now known as Dodger 07-440) was limping and crying, and pulled himself under the exhaust pipe of a car, burning some of the hair on his back.

Finally everyone was able to gather all the puppies and put them in the car.  Before driving away, they pulled the tag off the steel crate the puppies were in, hoping to track down the driver.  When they got into town they called the emergency shelter line, and the shelter decided to admit the pups that night since one of the pups (little Dodger) needed medical attention.  Upon seeing the pups, they told my dad  that they were probably puppy mill puppies.

The initial plan was that the puppies would be put up for adoption at this shelter, although they warned my dad that if the pups didn't find homes, they would be put to sleep.  Like most shelters, they have especially bad luck at placing black dogs, even while they're still puppies.  They are currently at full capacity and their adoption rate is very low.  When I told RAGOM this story and that these babies were at risk of being euthanized, they decided to make them honorary Goldens, and asked if I could make the necessary arrangements to get them out of the shelter ASAP.  Saturday the 14th was their lucky day, as they began their journey to RAGOM foster homes in Iowa and Minnesota.

Well it's another beautiful Minnesota summer evening and Oliver is sitting here wondering when he is going to find his forever family - not that he doesn't like us - but he is hoping to snuggle into his permenate doggy bed.  He is doing wonderfully, he is still potty training and really doing a good job (not perfect).  He is an absolute love bug and loves falling asleep for naps in his humans arms:)  His tail never stops wagging when he is around people. Ollie really needs someone he can follow around the house even if it's just to plop down and fall asleep when they sit down.  I think he will need to sleep in the same room too.  As far as needs other then I have mentioned above- I think he can fit into any type of family.  Is is gentle with kids, loves other dogs and I even caught him kissing our guinea pigs:) He can be a bed buddy or he can be crated.  Puppies are great at adapting to your schedule and are happy to do so:) One thing that is going on with Oliver is a possible ringworm infection.  He was tested a couple weeks ago and so far so it is negative but the final outcome will be Thursday (I think).  Two of his littermates tested positive and his sister who he was living with us tested negative.  The vet says to just put athlete foot cream on for 30 days as a precaution and/or treatment.  There is an incubation period of 4-10 days and we have had him and/or his sister for 15 days.  If you are interested in Ollie and don't mind putting cream on him for 4 weeks then please email  placementatragom [dot] org or you could come meet him and fall in love and wait to bring him home - but you won't want to:)  He is a charmer!

Hi there my name is Oliver and I wanted to sent an update to all my fans:)  I am at my new fosters home now and have settled in nicely.  I guess my sister Ella 07-441 missed me so I gave in and moved here to play with her.  I think she just wanted someone to boss around and beat up.  I really love to play with her but I'm more laid back and easygoing and just want to hang out sometimes.  My foster mom says that I'm a joy to have around because I love to snuggle and I'm not very destructive like most puppies.  I am learning many new things since RAGOM took us in.  I am getting the hang of potty training and to sit for treats and to sit and be patient before I'm served my dinner.  I guess my foster likes good doggy manners.  When I get my permanent home I am trained to sleep in a kennel or cuddle up in bed with my new owners:)  I'm very versatile.  Treats are my friend and I will learn anything to get them.  I am very smart you know. Well, my bossy sister is telling me to get off the computer so that she can write her update so I better go.  If you are interested in making me a part of your family forever to love and cherish contact placementatragom [dot] org and you can come and meet me:) PS- you will love me.
