This is the most recent information available; however, it may change as we learn more about the dog.

Ozzie is a 12 year old neutered male - Golden/Yellow Lab mix - who grew up and lived with one loving family since he was a puppy. Due to a changing situation, the family felt that they could not provide Ozzie with the attention and care that he deserves.

Ozzie is a mellow, affectionate and surprisingly spry and energetic gentleman. The first time he goes out in the morning, he briskly trots to the back yard to do his business. Things calm down after that. He grew up and lived with a litter mate and has fit right in with the resident pack of three. Ozzie exhibits no aggression or resource guarding issues. He is used to cats and after meeting the resident twosome cordially, he has exhibited only a mild benevolent interest in them. I do have a baby gate which protects the litter box area as Ozzie is interested in exploring same. Ozzie grew up with children (who are currently elementary school aged) and the surrendering owner reported that even when they were toddlers, Ozzie was very gentle with them. Ozzie is a tall boy who weighs in at a trim 75 lbs. His SO indicated that he would probably do best with a fenced yard, not because he runs, but because he will wander to explore if left to his own devices. We have not experienced this because our yard is fully fenced and Ozzie always follows the resident pack. We'll test this further.

This big sweetheart of a guy is amazing. Faced with unfamiliar surroundings, people and other animals on the night he arrived, the extent of his anxiety was panting and drinking some water for about an hour. That, however, did not deter him from exploring the house and starting to settle down with the residents. That was Ozzie's adjustment period! He then slept through the night by my bed - and continues to do so. Ozzie has settled in to his new routine as if he's always been here. He not only accepts but seeks out his hugs and pats and kisses and loves to get his rear end scratched. He reciprocates with smiles, kisses and tail wagging. He likes to be in the same area as everyone else and happily shares the dog beds. Ozzie is fully house trained; he had one accident (that was probably FM's fault) in the five days since he has arrived. When I leave the house, Ozzie and two of the residents are crated. That has worked out just fine. Ozzie is treat motivated and rushes to get into the crate. I should note, however, that I am almost never gone for more than 4 hours at a time. I do think that Ozzie's days of being left alone all day are behind him and that he appreciates more frequent potty breaks.

Ozzie is scheduled for a vet visit next week. More on his history and health status at that time. He will also be at the Richfield VCA on December 14th from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m.

If you are looking for a sweet companion who wants to love and be with you, come and meet this dear boy!

Ozzie joined my household in May, 2014. He was a sweet and gentle old man. He was 12 years and 10 months when I got him, so I knew I need to enjoy every moment. He and my resident dog, Cooper, got along well. Ozzie enjoyed short daily walks, stuffed toys, and long naps. Ozzie was smart and curious. He greeted every person, and stuck his nose in every bag that entered my house. He may have had an old body, but he had a young heart and a sparkle that never left his eyes. Ozzie was diagnosed with a mass in his liver in October 2014. I hoped we would be able to celebrate his 14th birthday on the 4th on of July, but Mother Nature intervened and Ozzie left us 6/7/2015, one month before his birthday. I enjoyed every minute of the one year we had together.

Here's the best news ever!  Sweet Mr. Ozzie Bozzie was adopted and went to his Forever Home today!!  He has a wonderful new mom and a bubbly wiggly fur brother.  Everyone is just delighted.

We celebrated Ozzie's new beginning w/his very own going away party Friday evening.  First, he got to choose the ears he wanted to wear; he selected the blue Mickey pair.  Next was ice cream and then presents: can of pumpkin (for fiber), a jar of peanut butter (snacks and treats) and 2 jumbo tennis balls, one for the big guy and one for his new brother.  If its one thing we do well - its celebrate!

Our love goes with Ozzie and his new family.  We hope to see you at Goldzilla, if not before!

Ozzie Bozzie here! Did everyone see the beautiful spring icons that my first mom and sisters sent to me?! I am a lucky guy. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! You are so thoughtful. When I think of you, I must get a goofy little smile on my face. When Zozo and the boys spot that smile, they know that I'm dancing with all my happy memories of you and our life together. You are so special to me. I will love you forever and ever!

Ozzie Bozzie here and am I excited!  Did you see my spring happy icon from the H's?  Aren't I lucky!!

Now there's some "history" behind that thoughtful message that I need to let you in on.  I haven't met the people/dogs that sent me that message BUT Zozo (my resident foster sister) explained that she was fostered by the H's when Ragom rescued her from the Missouri puppy mill several years ago.  Zozo told me that she first experienced a world where there was love and happiness and hope for a good life when she arrived at the H's.  Beautiful Zozo lives here now in her Forever Home.  We boys (me and the two resident guys) call her "Flirty Myrty" because she is such a doll.

Look at the pictures I've included below.  It's me and Zozo.  Everyone in this family likes to snuggle - both with FM and with each other.  As you can see, they've even got me doing it now!  So, thank you to the H's.  Zozo is living the golden life and loving every minute of it.  She gives me the confidence that I will some day meet my Forever Family too!

Hi everyone - FM here.  I had to wrestle the keyboard away from Ozzie to add a quick note also.  All is well with us.  Sadly, the golf course locked the gates for the summer and so we are back into our routine of walking in the neighborhood and down by the River.  I've found that walking the residents first and then giving Ozzie his turn works the best.  Ozzie walks fast and - as long as we stay in the middle of the sidewalk - with purpose.  If we start to slow down or meander, however, Ozzie all of a sudden feels the need to mark everything and criss cross from side to side.  So, our walks resemble troop marches more than walks, I think.  Ozzie does not like (as in HATES) the gentle leader.  So, we have compromised.  We use the Martingale collar on walks and everyone seems content with that.  He doesn't pull - he just walks briskly, which is fine w/FM.

Ozzie continues to be one of the sweetest and most "go along" guys I've ever seen.  He loves to go outside and he loves to come in and nap.  He loves his breakfast/dinner and catches his treats on the fly if I toss gently.  Particularly with the nicer weather coming now, he thoroughly enjoys wandering in the back yard and smelling all the smells.  He is always my last guy in and if I have call him, he happily runs across the yard to join me.

Let me add my thanks to the H's for Ozzie's spring icon.  You are just super and I appreciate your thoughtfulness.

Hi everybody -

Ozzie Bozzie here!  Its been a busy few weeks.  We've had workmen tramping in and out of the house.  The residents acted like an air raid warning system so that none of those guys could sneak in undetected.  I hung back and watched... kind of like a supervisor.  I was particularly glad that I assumed that supervisory role when I heard the workmen say they were going up onto the roof.  That didn't sound like fun.  I watched them climb up.  I - being smart as well as handsome - was safely on terra firma.  After all that was over, FM said that she had had an "Ah Ha" moment about me: that she has never heard me bark.  I guess its true.  I'm a quiet kind of guy.

Despite the workmen, we've been going to the Golf Course.  Its mushy and FM and I make slow progress: good exercise but we don't get very far.  The residents are off leash but even they have a challenge.  Mostly, its just nice to be outside.

FM has started to call me a harbinger of spring.  She always kisses my forehead and smiles when she says it - so I know that's good.  In other words, I'm blowing my winter coat.  Almost every night I get treated to a brushing all over, which I just love.  Now, as soon as I hear FM go into the cupboard and get the brush, I come right over and lie down.  FM says that getting rid of "that old stuff" has allowed a new beautiful me to emerge.  When I got here, FM started to feed me the food that the residents get (and does it taste good!).  My new spring coat is soft and shiny.  FM says I'm the handsomest boy ever!  She even cut my toe nails one night.  I don't really like that, but FM is really fast and it was over before I knew it.

We celebrated St. Patrick's Day - with ice cream but no beer.  Maybe next year for the beer!  Any excuse for a party is our motto!

HAPPY SPRING!

Ozzie Bozzie here.  WOWSER BOWSER!!  Am I EXCITED - FM just told me that I got another valentine.  This one is from Byron and Larry.  You guys are the best!  With the card from you - and the one from my first family - and the ice cream - and the residents all wanting to know how I've gotten so lucky to have all this attention.... I am just overwhelmed.  I even let FM put the tiara back on for a second picture.  It looks good, doesn't it.  And look at the other picture - several of the residents are asking what my secret is that I'm getting so many valentines.  It just doesn't get any better than this. Thank you for making my world such a wonderful place to be!

Thursday, February 13, 2014

Hi!  Ozzie Bozzie here!  FM said I could write a quick message before she does - so here goes.  I want to send a GIANT thank you to my first mom and the girls for the beautiful valentine.  I started to smile when FM showed it to me and I've been smiling ever since.  My whole body fills with love whenever I think of my first family.  FM says it will be that way forever and ever.  I know that I'm a very lucky boy from talking with some of the other Ragom guys at the Meet and Greets: some of them are loved for the first time in their lives by their foster parents.  How fortunate I am to have been loved my whole life!  Its also been fun because I was the first one in the family to get a valentine - so I feel extra special.  Thank you - Thank you - Thank you!

FM here.  And I can vouch for Ozzie that he has been smiling ever since he got his special valentine!  In keeping with our tradition that no matter how small, every holiday is cause to celebrate, we had special ice cream treats for Valentine's Day.  Plus, Ozzie seemed to enjoy wearing the special tiara.  I told him that I specifically picked out pink so that it would show off his beautiful brown eyes.  HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY!

Friends who have a two year old little girl stopped by this week end and it gave me a new situation in which to observe Ozzie's behavior.  The child knows the three residents.  She's not afraid of them but she is watchful because they tend to move quickly and unexpectedly.  Greetings are particularly enthusiastic and somewhat chaotic.  Until this visit, the little girl spent much of her time on the couch, out of harm's way.  That pattern changed when she met Ozzie!  Perhaps because he was so calm - and perhaps because he moved a bit more slowly and deliberately - and perhaps because he kept slowly wagging his tail - the little girl was just drawn to him. He was almost as tall as she is.  She was also very smart:  She maneuvered around sweet Ozzie so that he acted as a doggie "shield" between her and the residents when things got exciting!

After everyone settled down, she used Ozzie as a demo dog and treated us all to a naming of body parts - eyes, ears, nose, teeth, etc.  The ever patient Ozzie obviously relished the attention. The interaction between the child and Ozzie during the visit really captured and highlighted the sweet essence of this senior.  It was just heartwarming.

Ozzie has had a busy few weeks.  In addition to his continuing adventures at the golf course (weather permitting), Ozzie participated in Ragom's Edina and Burnsville Meet and Greets.

I thoroughly enjoy watching Ozzie at the Meet and Greets.  He's very gentlemanly, wags his tail and smiles when he meets someone.  At the same time, although cordial, he's quite self possessed and not at all pushy.  And, after about 1-1 1/2 hours, Ozzie has had enough excitement.  He then finds a nice spot (Thank you, Julie, for providing the comfortable bed for the big guy in Burnsville) and settles in for a nap.

Ozzie was tired after we came home from the Meet and Greets too. The attached picture shows him just ready to nod off Saturday evening. What a sweetie pie.

Wednesday, January 22, 2014

Hi! Ozzie Bozzie here! I've had so much fun in the last 10 days that I volunteered to do this update. It's about "The Golf Course."

Let me give you some background: when I first arrived and it was time for walks, FM would take me first. When we got home, I'd get a frozen peanut butter kong (the best!) and FM would then take the residents to a place called "The Golf Course". I asked the residents what this place is. They told me it's located just down the street. It's a big park-like place that is fully fenced and, in the winter, the gates are unlocked so that neighborhood people can take their dogs to run and play. People cross country ski over there also.

Well, guess what?! I'm going to The Golf Course now too. & Hooray! It's huge! The residents are allowed off leash. FM told me that although she knows that I wouldn't run away, the rules are that since I'm not a permanent resident, I have to stay on leash. I don't mind though. It's just so fun to hike around, meet new dogs and be with the residents and FM. Many different smells too. It's also pretty tiring to tramp around in the snow - there are lots of hills. So, all of us guys are ready to take a snooze when we get home, to rest up for the next fun activity like dinner or bone chewing or looking out the living room window and guarding the street from strangers. FM says I'm going to be the fittest foster ever by the spring.

That's all for now. Have a good week! Come and meet me on Saturday in Burnsville; I'll be there from 11-1:00!

Ozzie

FM has found a flaw (finally!), albeit a small one, in sweet Ozzie Bozzie.  He doesn't like to have his toe nails trimmed.  When faced with the clippers, Ozzie used passive resistance and pulled his paw away every time FM tried to zero in on a nail.  FM folded quickly - and took the big guy to the vet for a trim.  On the other hand, Ozzie absolutely loves to be groomed.  FM was brushing one of the residents the other evening when Ozzie woke up, came over and stood over me, "I'm next" written all over his face.  As soon as I started on him, he lay down and let out a HUGH sigh of pleasure.  What a sweetie.

Ozzie eats twice a day.  FM folds his meds into a piece of cheese so that they are gobbled up along with his kibble.  His dish is elevated - placed on a box - which makes it easier for him to eat because his legs are so long.  Before eating, he sits - upon request - and waits for his dish like a gentlemen.  He loves his food.  Even more, he loves his treats.  Treats elicit an automatic sit response from Ozzie!

The residents and Ozzie are evolving from a 3 into a 4 dog pack.  Everyone cuddled close when we had the cold snap.

"Dog ownership is like a rainbow.  Puppies are the joy at one end.  Old dogs are the treasure at the other"  (by Carolyn Alexander).  This quote fits sweet Ozzie to a T.  He is a treasure and endears himself to us more and more - as he will to the person/people in his forever home.

A friend passed along a nice warm dog coat which fits Ozzie nicely.  Just in time for the cold snap.  Ozzie looks quite dapper in it, doesn't he.

The best Ozzie news this week is that with the vet's encouragement, Ozzie is weaned off two of the medications that he was on when he arrived here: Prednisone and Chlomipramine.  The latter is an expensive anti-anxiety med and we were prepared to replace it with a less expensive version.  The good news is that it doesn't appear that Ozzie needs to be on any anxiety med at all.  HOORAY for Ozzie!!  The effect of being off the med has been marked.  Ozzie is much more alert and interested in what is going on around him.  He participates more in daily doggie activities, bone chewing, et al.  He's got an additional spring in his step: when I let everyone out in the morning, I have seen him run (not trot!) to the back yard.  It's as if he's gotten several years younger.  He's also increased his requests for hugs and pats.  In that regard, he's like a magnetic force field.  As soon as he wants attention, there are four Goldens clustered around me that REQUIRE love and kisses.  It doesn't get much better.

Finally, FM concluded this week that not only is Ozzie handsome and sweet, he's also smart.  Part of the back walk has ice on it so its like a frozen slip'n'slide which must be crossed to get to and from the back yard.   Rather than follow the residents on their dangerous passage, FM saw Ozzie choose a new path the other morning.  He ducked behind several bushes and crossed the walk where it is free of ice.  What a smart guy!

All in all, 2014 is starting out to be a wonderful new year!

Happy Holidays!  Ozzie and the residents thoroughly enjoyed themselves on the 25th.  First off, everyone got a new Dura-Chew bone.  This insured that peace and quiet would prevail during stocking and present opening by the people.  Ozzie settled himself on the new dog bed next to all the presents and didn't move for about 2 hours.

The tradition that met with mixed reviews by the canine contingent were the new moose ears that everyone received and were expected to wear for the occasion....at least until pictures could be taken of same.  Predictably, the reactions ranged from horror ("Why are you punishing me?") by Zozo 12-108 to placid acceptance ("Would you like me to wear these for one hour or two?") by our Ozzie Bozzie.  Who knew such differing emotions could also be captured in one picture.

Other than celebrating the occasion, several miscellaneous observations about the past week:

  1. Ozzie has relished the more moderate temperatures we've recently had.  We took a number of walks.  I use a leash with just his flat collar.  He trots along briskly (he's got long legs) but doesn't pull so we both enjoy ourselves!
  2. As an initial precautionary measure, I crated Ozzie when I left the house.  But starting with short errands and extending to 4 hours several times this past week, Ozzie has been left uncrated and loose in the house while I've been gone.  No problems!  Nothing disturbed!  Ozzie is probably happier too.  Having free roam means that he can sleep on his super thick comfy bed while I'm gone.
  3. Another precautionary measure was to put all dog bones and toys away before Ozzie arrived.  Well, they're all back out.  No one is possessive... not even a cross bark or growl.

Happy New Year!

Hi everybody!  Ozzie here!  I sure have the Holiday spirit (FM says I'll get used to the reindeer ears) and I volunteered to let everyone know what's going on in my world.

First of all, I want to send the fondest Christmas thoughts and wishes to my first mom and the girls.  When I dream about them, the dreams are always happy ones   My FM says that its obvious that I have been loved my whole life because I am such a sweet affectionate guy.  She's right!

Here are some things I've experienced in the last few weeks -

First:  I have discovered the most delicious food in the whole world - peanut butter.  The residents and I get to scour out the almost empty containers as special treats.  FM says Golden tongues are exactly the right length to get the last sticky bit at the bottom of the jar.

Second: The residents sleep on the bed with FM.  I tried to jump up too the first night here but my knees don't work that way any more.  This upset me until FM moved my bed right over next to the side where she sleeps.  Now, if I get up and turn around in the night, FM always reaches out and pats me to let me know she's there.  I go right back to sleep when she does that.

Third:  I really enjoy having the resident dogs and cats around.  Everyone seems to have a real laissez faire attitude... this even extends to bone sharing!   I'm never lonely.  FM sounded surprised the other day when she observed that I'm developing a special friendship with Dudley (teenaged terror resident Maine Coon Cat).   When I lie on the hall carpeting, Dudley has started to also come over and keep me company.  He doesn't do that w/anyone else.  FM says its like the lion lying down w/the lamb... with me being the lamb!

Fourth: FM is around a lot.  When she does go out, I'm crated along with two of the other guys, by a window.  That way we can all still see what is going on in the neighborhood.  FM calls me "Ozzie Bozzie," gives me lots of hugs and kisses, tells me that I'm a very special boy and have brought a special joy to the family just in time for the holidays.

Lastly, what I want the most for Christmas is my very own forever home.  FM says there is a special person or people waiting for a well behaved sweet mature guy like me, who understands that all I really need or want is to have a person/people to love and who will love me.  That love would fill my heart and world to overflowing.

FROM ALL OF US TO ALL OF YOU - HAVE A GOLDEN CHRISTMAS!

Monday, December 16, 2013

Sweet Mr. Ozzie has had a busy week. His SO provided us with Ozzie's health records and between those and his visit to the vet, there's a lot to report. Ozzie's records reflect that he had surgery on his right and left rear knees (ie, anterior cruciate ligaments and meniscal repair) in, respectively, November 2007 and September 2011. These surgeries do not affect his daily activities (navigating his FM's one level house with wood floors, trotting around the back yard and/or walking briskly - estimated pace at about 3 mph - when we go out. He's enthusiastic about his walks!) He followed me downstairs this week to explore the basement and just as nimbly returned to the first floor after satisfying his curiosity. The surgeries do mean, however, that Ozzie's days of Agility and jumping are over. So, he's not a bed hog or couch potato! Getting into the car is not a problem: he gets his front legs in and gets a quick "assist" from me for the back legs. This is not difficult as the Ozzie carries most of his bulk and weight in his head/shoulders/chest. He gets out of the car independently.

Our vet visit reflects the Ozzie is UTD on all vaccines. He is now micro chipped. His heart worm test was negative as was his fecal test. His blood work is within normal limits. Is this guy amazing or what! As an expected result of his surgeries, Ozzie has arthritis in his back legs. To ease this discomfort, he is on Meloxicam, a prescription medication, which is supplemented with glucosamine/chondroitin and fish oil tablets. The other necessary aspect of Ozzie's arthritis treatment program is regular exercise. The cold temperatures have challenged this requirement, as do Ozzie's tender feet, which make long walks impossible right now. So, we have opted for frequent short walks! Ozzie is currently on a small dosage of thyroid medication which the lab results indicate should be continued. The vet suggested we tinker with whether Ozzie should continue on medication for anxiety. (Ozzie's SO indicated that Ozzie slept in the garage and, over time, started to bark at night. The vet at the time suggested an anxiety med. As Ozzie does not appear to be particularly anxious since his arrival, we'll test whether we can discontinue or further reduce the dosage on this med.) A preliminary cost estimate for Ozzie's meds and supplements is about $50.00/month. We celebrated the positive results of Ozzie's vet visit and lab findings with extra biscuits for everyone!

On the fun side of the ledger, Ozzie went to his first Meet and Greet in Richfield, MN this past Saturday. He thoroughly enjoyed his car ride and, after "snooting" the back windows for about two minutes, settled down for a snooze both going to and returning from his outing. It was busy! Many dogs, people, Santa Claus, photographer and a table of treats! Ozzie was both the sniffer and sniffee on countless occasions, which included myriad Goldens, Great Danes, some Labs, Hannah the bulldog, two Frenchies and so on. We looked in vain for the partridge. Throughout, Ozzie was unflappable. He cordially mixed and mingled but displayed his usual good manners and handled the hubbub with aplomb. After about an hour and a half, Ozzie needed a break and calmly lay down in the middle of it all to rest.

Ozzie's own dear self is starting to emerge more and more with us. He has settled in to our routine seamlessly and is starting to seek out pats and love. He shares his bed with the resident Maine Coon cat upon request and snuggles happily with one of the canine residents. He's also getting ready Christmas!
