Patty Cakes arrived at my home this last Sunday. Patty is an unspayed, overbred 6 year old female that has spent her life producing massive amounts of puppies. This girl is finally free from the imprisonment of breeding. It always amazes me the love that puppy producers show to people after they have been treated so poorly. She is affectionate, loving, accepting, has a flexible spirit and is a velcro puppy.

Patty came to RAGOM in pretty rough shape, but that does not change her spirit for life. She is 93 pounds (20 pounds overweight), she is being treated for Ehrilichia (a tick borne condition), her hair resembles that of a lab as it is just growing back in from having a yeast skin infection, she has an infected sabetious gland on her tail, her teeth are horrible full of plaque build-up, double ear infections, her skin is black and she has hair loss. The last two conditions could be due to an out of whack thyroid. We are waiting on those results - this test can take up to 2 weeks.

Even with all of these ailments, Patty is just an angel. She is as quiet as a mouse, even though she is quite the moose! She waddles, she is so overweight - it is very sad. This has not taken away Patty's spirit though. She loves, loves, loves her walks. There are times when she runs on our walks!  She is totally out of breath when we come back, but can't wait for the next time we go on a walk! She just sniffs the clean air, smells the grass and soaks up the positive energy. It is impossible not to fall in love with her. 

We started the extreme makeover the minute this girl stepped into our home. She is on a very healthy raw diet (not too sure about the raw meat patty yet), raw and cooked vegetables, oatmeal and some fruit (not too sure about the fruit either).  She eats so fast and always seems hungry, so I am hoping and praying that her thyroid is low, that would resolve many of her problems. I would like to get her in the bathtub, but for some reason she is afraid of our carpeted stairs. I think it is more like she does not know what is at the end of the stairs! Because our bedrooms are upstairs and she will not go up them, we moved the crate to the office on the middle floor. She goes right in her crate at night and sleeps all night, not a peep! It is the first time that a foster dog of mine is not right next to me during the nighttime, but she is such an angel that I do not worry. Cadence 08-433 sleeps in the office, so she has promised to keep an eye on Miss Patty :  )

Patty loves all people including kids. Because Patty came from a backyard breeder she is required to have another dog in her forever home and also a fence.  She does not have any severe behaviors like a puppy mill girl would, but these type of dogs do better and are ultimately happier with these things in her life.

Thank you for reading about sweet Patty. I am so proud of this girl! She was put in a situation where she had to sacrifice her body, health and her quality of life and never asked for anything in return. She is enjoying the simple things in life and just so accepting of everything and everyone.  Fresh air, cool grass under her feet, lots of petting, toys and human companionship.

Patty came into RAGOM an overbred girl used for one thing…producing babies.  She was so neglected and never loved.  Well, that changed when she became a RAGOM girl and ultimately found her forever family.  I was Patty’s foster and the day that she met her forever family was the luckiest day for our girl.  Her new family is amazing and you will be able to tell by the pictures that she is now healthy, happy and thriving in her home!  Truly a success story!

Here is a note from her forever Mom…

She now weighs 68 pounds!  Nearly all of the excess skin on her stomach has shrunken up, and she is fit and trim as a result of regular trips to the dog park.   At the dog park she runs and plays with the younger dogs and retrieves tennis balls, while still finding time to seek out the attention of as many people as possible.  Of course she still maintains her status as top dog at our house, calmly and confidently keeping the other dogs in line.  And, as you can see from the attached photo, she still enjoys snoozing out in the best spot in the house!

We can’t imagine not having Patty as a part of our family-even though she has only been with us for two years, it seems as though she has always been here.

Some of our rescue dogs have been loved and you just continue that love.Some have never been kissed on their nose and may never have received an ounce of respect.  The latter was true for Patty.  She was used as a commodity and was only valuable when she was producing puppies.  Once she was used up, she was thrown out.

Well, today was the happiest day of Patty's life.  She found a family that does not care if she has broken teeth, that her belly skin is loose or that she has a cyst on her tail.  She is perfect to them!  The first thing Patty's new dad said when he walked into the house is "Oh, she is beautiful!"  It is a miracle for Patty that she became a RAGOM girl and we were able to find her a special family that she will live out the rest of her days with.

It is with such happiness that I announce that Patty Cakes is ADOPTED!  We packed her bags (yes, she took the "smooch me" pillow with her!), she jumped into her new mom and dad's car and rode off into the sunset.  She is an Iowa girl now and will have 4 furr sissies and one furr brother to play with.  The "K" family are true rescue people and have saved so many animals and given them fabulous lives.  I am so happy for Miss Patty, she is just so lucky and deserving of a good life.  She is a gentle girl who loves her tummy rubbed and her nose scratched.  Patty will never be without companionship again.  She will be loved forever and ever.  Thank you RAGOM for rescuing Patty and to the "K" family for welcoming Patty into your family.  We will always love you Patty.

Patty is really coming out of her shell.  She found the toy bin in the living room and took each toy out and spread them all over the house!  I think she thought it was Christmas or something.  She did find her favorite one and that is a stuffed egg with, of course, a squeeker.  She squeeks, and squeeks and squeeks that egg for hours!  We have gotten used to the sound and it make me so happy that she is having fun.  She just loves her toys!
 
Tuesday is the big day when she gets spayed and we are hoping they will tuck some of her tummy too.  She has extra skin from having so many babies and it would be great if they could get rid of some of that.  We will give her a bath tomorrow so she is all ready to go.  I will drop her off in the morning and then pick her up in the evening.  I don't anticipate any problems, but we are anxious to get that behind us.  She loves her crate, so we will probably keep her in there while she is resting to keep her quiet and resting so she can heal.
 
Other than that, she gets about 6 miles of walking in a day.  Not all at the same time of course, but rather 3 - 2 miles walks.  When she first arrived, she could barely make it a couple of blocks, now she trots and even runs!  I can see her getting stronger and I am hoping some more of that weight is coming off, we will find out on Tuesday.

Patty is starting to come out of her shell.  She is totally obsessed with the lime green "smooch me" pillow.  She carries it around, sleeps with it, tosses it, etc.  It is so sweet to see her have fun!  It is so funny because I will put it in her crate while she sleeps at night and she will arrange it where she wants it.  Last night it was on her right side and she picked it up and put it on her left and then cuddled into it!  This may have to go with her to her forever home :  )  I seriously need to find another one because Cadence 08-433 loves it too!  This pillow was given to us by a wonderful family that adopted my little  RAGOM dog Charlie :  ) 

Patty has been getting 2 - 3 walks per day and she loves it!  Our motivation is to get these unwanted pounds off of her and of course because she loves them, she does not know we have a different agenda!  All the better!  Today is Saturday and the furr kids are glad to have mom home.  We will play outside a lot, chill on the deck and have a lot of walks!  Enjoy the new pics.  Still on the pink dog bed, silly Patty Cakes :  )

Have you ever had a house guest that was just so unbelievably wonderful you didn't want them to leave?Well, that is how our Miss Patty is!  She is just the best little house guest!  She is polite, does not beg, she is quiet, fairly neat, doesn't demand anything - well except for her belly to be rubbed :  ) -  she is fairly mellow and just appreciates being alive.  When we are walking I get tears in my eyes because I see the joy in this little girls face.  The joy of being free to enjoy life as it should be.  Patty does not hold a grudge that she was a used commodity for the first 6 years of her life.  She is just enjoying TODAY and making the most of every minute.  I have learned so much from our Patty.  It has been super hectic at our house with kids going back to college, senior pictures, work etc.  When I come home and am greeted by the furr butts, it just takes all of the stress away.  Patty is right there in the pack asking for some pets and typically rolls onto her back, spread eagle :  ) and looks at you with her soulful eyes only to say "scrub my belly please!"

Patty Cakes finally went upstairs!  We had to carry her up there the first time to give her a bath, so I think she learned it was not so scary up there!  She now follows me up and down the stairs and loves exploring around.  She is still sleeping in her crate in the office and she goes in like a charm.  She probably would not need to be crated, but she is content in there and that way she is not awaken by our other "early riser foster" Cadence Ann :  )  This girl is as quiet as a mouse in her crate until I come and get her in the morning to go potty, eat and walk - then her tail goes thump, thump, thump :  )  She is just so, so sweet and cooperative.  If only my teenager could take lessons from her :  )

 Patty has not had any accidents in the house which I think is amazing!  She does all her business outside.  I almost cried the other night as I was on the computer and I was scanning the room for her.  I could hear her breathe (well, actually snore, she is so heavy that she snores), but I could not see her.  I stood up and there she was, curled up on the pink dog bed!  For never being in a house and knowing what it was even for, she figured it out and probably thought "now this is the life!"  It was just so emotional for me because she was never able to have choices in her life and now something as simple as finding the perfect place and most comfortable place to sleep is actually a decision that she is able to make.  Smart girl to pick the prettiest and softest dog bed in the house!  She is just a doll...

We are still awaiting the thyroid results, but we will let you know when we receive those.  Her spay is on hold until then, so we are anxious to move forward.  Thank you for reading about sweet Patty, she sends kisses to her fans!
