Please welcome Penny to RAGOM! Penny has just had her 6th birthday this week! Happy Birthday Penny! Penny is a super sweet spayed purebred Golden Retriever. She came into RAGOM because she was just a little too energetic for the former owners' young kids. More on that in a bit...
What can I tell you about this sweet girl? She is quite the lover. She will give lots of kisses! She loves to be petted, but what Golden Retriever doesn't? She is extremely energetic for a 6-year-old. She is housetrained and loves to eat. She has free roam at night and does great.
Okay, now we will get to the nitty gritty: When we first got this girl, she was hyper! Penny ran around the house and was jumping a bit, paws on chest. I know that she comes to her name, she knows sit and shake, but this girl really needs to work on her welcome manners. I don't think she has ever had obedience training, so I really feel that any family that would want to adopt her really should take her to obedience school. It would be so good for her and it can be a great bonding experience for the two of you. I don't think she realizes her size and that is part of the reason she is now with RAGOM. With that being said, I think it would be best if Penny went to a home without little kids. Don't get me wrong, she loves kids, but Penny is just a little big. It is also rumored that she is great with cats. She loves other dogs and gets along great with our resident dog.
Speaking of being big, we went to the vet today and Penny is in perfect health! She weighs 84 pounds, so she really needs to lose 10-15 pounds. For that reason, we really need a family that is going to commit to exercising this girl and to help her get that weight down.
Penny is used to being in a fenced in yard. At the house she was in previously, she was able to jump the 4 foot fence to chase squirrels, so we need a fence for her that is a little higher. She has a tie-out here and does fine, but I know she would love a fence or at least someone that is committed to walking her as she has quite a bit of energy. I was at the vet today and the receptionist asked me if she was a puppy because she was so excited, pulling, and exploring.
This brings me to outside. Like I said, Penny is fine on a tie-out but I have learned that this girl is a barker when left alone outside. She will also bark a little inside at the door if it is open and there is another dog that catches her eye. She will quiet down once you tell her to or call her to where you are - then all that was outside is forgotten!
Penny can also be your typical 6 year old and definitely has a mellow side to her. When there is not activity, she is content to just lay by your side. She is so sweet and loves to just give you quiet company in any room that you are in.
Penny is really great on walks. She does not pull and does really well with the gentle leader. She did putter out on our walk today and took a break a few times in people's yards. My resident started to follow her lead. It was quite funny. Needless to say, once Penny started puttering out, I took the gentle leader off and just used the flat collar and she walked great.
Penny loves her tennis balls with fetch and she loves toys and bones. She does not have a mean bone in her body. She is just a love!
