Phillip 06-04-213

Profile

3/9/06: Phillip arrived at our house last night and has lots of love to share! He is approximately 10 years old, has a notable grey face, and a tail that is always wagging. We took him out for a walk and you can tell that he has a good hunting instinct - he got pretty excited about the rabbits and squirrels that we walked by! He is house broken, obeys commands, loves tennis balls, and cuddling on the couch or the bed with you. We will be going to the vet tonight, so more updates will be coming soon.

Phillip went on vacation this past week!! While his foster family was away Phillip went to stay with a friend on the west side of the cities. He had many walks around the lakes and thoroughly enjoyed himself. Despite his super fun trip, you could tell that Phillip was glad to be home - he is such a loyal dog. After having not seen his foster family for a week he was very excited to see them again. He spent the whole day smiling and snuggling with us. He will be perfect for any family that wants a caring dog with a lot of love to give.

Phillip did have a short seizure right before we went on vacation. We were a little startled when it happened, but the seizure was short and he recovered fine from it. His previous owners mentioned that he has a history of them, but since they usually occur about 6 months apart and are short (only lasted about a minute) he is not on medication for them. We will be switching his food to something with fewer chemicals to see if that helps. Other than that, Phillip is just enjoying spring. He likes to sit on our stairs and watch the neighbors walk by the window and greet the postman.

Phillip will be going to the Minnetonka PetCo on Saturday, April 15 for the RAGOM event, come meet him there!

There is a dog who needs a home

and Phillip is his name - Oh!

and Phillip is his name - Oh!

In the few short weeks that we have fostered Phillip he has officially taken over our hearts – we even started singing that great song about him!

Phillip’s favorite thing about living with his foster family is the great new squeaky toy that he has received. Every chance Phillip gets he is wagging his tail and squeak-squeak-squeaking away!! And, the best thing about having Phillip around is the hugs that he gives – he climbs onto our laps and hugs us whenever we’re on the couch. That’s him hugging foster dad.

I found out a bit more about Phillip’s history and so I thought I would fill you in on what we know about this pooch. Phillip was found about 2 years ago near Fergus Falls. When he was taken in by RAGOM he was skin and bones and about 20 pounds lighter. He was adopted by a family in the metro area who nursed him back to good health. One big skill of Phillip’s is that he is rumored to be very good at hunting game birds. His previous family hunted with him and also said that he loves to swim. Also noteworthy is Phillip’s full name - “Phillip Johnny Bob” – which he earned from a children's book character!

Stay tuned for more updates...

Foster mom and dad brought me home this festive hat on St. Patrick’s Day – aren’t I adorable?

Phillip is very loyal…so loyal that you won’t need any other pets in the house (nor will Phillip allow them). This last week we tried to introduce Phillip to Boomer the dog and to a couple of cats. Phillip however, didn’t want anything to do with them. You could tell that Boomer’s presence in our house made Phillip feel threatened and he lashed out at Boomer because of this. Also, he seemed more interested in eating the cats instead of making friends with them. Phillip was rescued back in 2004 so we don’t know his whole story…my guess is that at one point in his life he needed food to survive so he learned to hunt and those skills haven’t left him.

Given the right situation (a home where he is the only pet) Phillip is everything that is great about Golden Retrievers. Phillip has run of the house while we’re at work and hasn’t caused any problems. We can leave the bedroom doors open, clothes on the floor, etc. and he doesn’t get into anything. He is so easy to take care of - the only thing he demands from us is love (and we have plenty of that to give!). Phillip is a very sweet and good natured. He's looking for a forever home, so he can regain his confidence and be pampered the way he deserves! By the way, did I mention that he has a new nickname - “Boots” - because his four paws are white.

Well, Phillip is looking a little tired - he went for a 2 mile run today and so now he’s off to take a nap.

Yesterday Phillip was enjoying the snow…too bad he didn’t feel the same about his Gentle Leader. In a vain attempt to free himself from the Gentle Leader’s grip he would plow his snout directly into the freshly fallen snow banks, submarine style. When this didn’t work he proceeded to thrash his face back and forth through the snow. I imagine someday soon he will accept the Gentle Leader as a part of going on walks.

Phillip is ready to go to his forever home. Phillip is the right dog for you if you want a very loving, housebroken dog. He has energy to go for long, fast-paced walks but his demeanor around the house is laid-back and relaxed. I have seen a couple of people mention wanting a therapy dog for nursing homes - if that's you, Phillip is your dog! He is so gentle with people, doesn't bark (unless he is around young dogs), always wags his tail and is really low maintenance. Phillip is always happy to see us a! nd this four-footed guy would really enhance the well-being of anyone around him.

Phillip has started to figure out that he is King of this house - he sleeps on the couch all day while we're gone, gets a little milk with his dinner, and will let out a few grunts if we aren't giving him enough attention! Phillip’s forever family better hurry up and find him because they are missing out on a ton of love!

Big adventures today for Phillip the Golden!! He had a ton of fun at the RAGOM event at PetCo today. It took Phillip a little while to warm up to all of the dogs but after a half hour he was having fun meeting everyone! Seeing Phillip interact today really showed what a great family dog he will be in his forever home. He loves attention and gets along great with children of all ages. He is appropriately gentle with small children and will really snuggle up to older children and adults – he just can’t get close enough!

Phillp was surrendered because he wasn’t getting along with the new puppy in the house. He showed some aggression toward the other dog (a youngster, who was the instigator!) and eventually this lead to Phillip running away a few times in the last year. This behavior didn’t start until they got the new puppy and the surrendering family felt that the running behavior had to do with the relationship Phillip had with the new dog. This played itself out today at PetCo - Phillip got pretty excited and barked at the younger dogs quite a bit. However, he got along great with the adult Goldens at the event.

It has been a busy first few days in foster care for Phillip. We visited the vet on 3/9 and had a great check up. Phillip is in good health and weighs in at about 70 lbs. Phillip’s hind legs show some stiffness when he tries to get up and down stairs, but once he is up he gets around with ease and is very energetic. This morning we went for a 2 mile walk and he had plenty more in him!

Phillip would be a great addition for any family with or without kids, no pets, or older dogs. If you’re an approved applicant and would like to meet Phillip, please email placementatragom [dot] org.
