9/11/05: Prince has returned once again to Norwood, MN. Prince is a former RAGOM dog who was adopted last January. Unfortunately, his family is being relocated for job reasons to another country, and decided it would not be fair to Prince to put him through the travel and quarantines that would be involved.

Prince is now 1 year old and quite a big guy. He is UTD on shots and neutered. He is definitely still gold in color, but don't tell him he seems to really be mostly Lab, and not much retriever at all. He still has the personality we remember, full of energy, happy all the time, play, play, play. He was introduced to the dogs here, both males, and did great. We actually had to separate the pups after a few hours so we humans could get a break. Seems they would play until they just dropped from exhaustion. He is interested in the cats, seems to want to play, but he is barking at them, which doesn't thrill the cats. He is very sweet, likes to be where the action is. His family said he does seem to have some abandonment issues, stemming from puppyhood, and does not really like to be left alone.. Also said he doesn't do well at all with crating, but we will try it out here in the next few days, and update more as we get reacquainted with Mr. Prince.

Prince is a Lab mix, who is about 80 lbs. of all sweetness. He is just over a year now (15 months) and is very healthy and active. Prince came back to RAGOM when his adoptive family was sent overseas for their employment, and were unable to take Prince along due to travel restrictions. He was up for adoption for a bit, then his former family thought they might have some loop holes to work with and the possibility arose for Prince to join them overseas, so Prince was taken back off the web site in order to give the family the opportunity to try and work this out. Unfortunately, it did not come to pass - there were just too many obstacles with the travel and restrictions. So, Prince is back on the web page and ready for adoption!

He has come quite far in his development since coming back to us in September. He completed a course of obedience, and is now able to walk on a leash with a leader and our biggest accomplishment has been working him up to being crated. He broke out of several crates early on, but after several months of coaxing, lots of positive reinforcement, a steel wire kennel and patience, he is now able to be crated while we are away from home and has even been known to take a little nap in there when he thinks no one is looking :) He still has issues as far as counter surfing, and getting into the trash if it is not behind closed doors, but we have learned to keep the counters clear and no food is left out.

He is still a big sweetie, and is very attached to the teenaged girls in the house as well as the 3 year old and most of all, our resident Golden. They still play like puppies every chance they get. Prince has a lot of energy and needs daily exercise, but will calm down when he needs to. He loves going for walks and is still very curious about the world around him. He gets along great with other dogs, cats (we have 4), loves kids, although he does forget his size every now and then, as he is still pretty young.

He is quite smart and very food/treat motivated so has the potential to learn much more than he knows now - which are the basics - come when called, sit, down, off, stay and heeling on the leash. He is not fond of being left alone, and must be crated when he is, or he will chew inappropriate items. He loves to go bye bye and is still really playful. He is also fairly sensitive and gets his feelings hurt easily. He is really just a big lover and wants to be with people....he is a very loyal and friendly dog who deserves a wonderful family to love him back.

Prince is adjusting just fine to all the changes. He's been to the vet and is the picture of health. He weighed in at 80 lbs. and is heartworm negative. He is a very happy go lucky boy, likes everyone he meets and gets along great with all dogs. He attended the RAGOM picnic this past weekend and had a good time meeting and greeting everyone and swimming in the lake.

Prince is definitely a typical 1 year old, lots of energy, and needs to have activities to do to keep him busy and out of trouble, like getting into the garbage if left alone with it, or counter surfing. He is very food driven, and this could likely be related to his rough start in life (was abandoned and starved as a pup along with his sister Zoe, recently adopted :))

He is very smart and with some consistent training and reinforcement will learn proper boundaries - after all, he is still a puppy. He LOVES to go out walking, and seems to really enjoy jogging/running, so would make someone a great jogging partner. He does pull on the leash when walking, but we are using the Gentle Leader, and he is getting better. We are going to start him in an adolescent obedience course tonight to get a jump start on it for his forever family! He loves kids (our house has a 14, 12 and 3 year old) and does fine with the cats.

He doesn't do all that well being left alone so far. We have crated him and he has broken out of two types of crates. He will go into the crate and lay down just fine if we are home though. We have to confine him to the kitchen with tall baby gates and remove any objects he may chew. His previous family said he didn't like to be left alone, and this seems to be the case, but we are working on ways to make him more comfortable with it. He really is a diamond in the rough. My daughters just love him - he has such a gentle, curious and loving nature. Whenever he gets into a bit of puppy trouble, he just looks up at you with this expression of "What did I do?". He has the sweetest eyes :)
